Laserdisc players - screenshot comparison
Time

OK, so who remembers this thread?

I've recently revisited this test pattern again. Here it is again, after a multi-frame average and black and white levels corrected in Avisynth:

Now, from reading up about the components of this pattern, I believe the background is supposed to be a 50% grey. This background is too bright. Since the black and white points are correct, we'll use a gamma adjustment to darken it:

The grey bars above the colour bars end up being approx 75% after this adjustment - this is what they're supposed to be. This is to match the intensity of the colour bars as a reference. This works as follows: let's convert to RGB and show just the blue channel:

If everything was calibrated correctly, the colour bars would alternate black-blue; the blue bars would be the same intensity as the bars above and the blacks would be pure black. Now you see that some of the blacks have a little blue in them, and the blue bars are darker than the bars above. The first problem is fixed with a minor hue tweak, the second by a little saturation boost, now we get:

Not perfect, but pretty close. You can check the red and green channels too, if you wanted. So what effect does these further tweaks have on the final image?

There you have it - capture calibration complete!

Info: Droids and Ewoks, anybody ?

Concerning the edge fringing (I feel like there is another term for it that escapes me at the moment) those are in the actual capture/source itself.  Keep in mind I am using a JVC 9600U SVHS player with TBC so the VCR itself shouldn't be adding much to the problem.

Edge halos?

Do you have any adjustments on the player? Some decks have a sharpness dial, my JVC SVHS deck has an "Edit Select" option that can be set to "Enhanced" (sharper edges, more ringing), "Normal" (minimal edge enhancement for normal viewing) or "Dub" (no edge enhancement, picture looks softer but best for dubbing or editing to minimize picture quality deterioration).

At least that's what I assume the options do, I haven't carried out a detailed comparison yet.

Edit: I've just pulled up the manual for your JVC model, and spotted this note:

Digital R3 picture system applies edge correction to the luminance signal to enhance detail.
...
If you use this VCR as the player for editing, be sure to set "DIGITAL R3" to "OFF" before starting.

I think this is the same sort of thing.

Well, I can confirm that the Malaysian Ewoks tape I obtained is also PAL with field blends.

Here's a short, lossless, uncalibrated/unprocessed sample (no audio):

These blends are very difficult to remove as sometimes - especially during fades or pans - there are no 'clean' fields available from which to reconstruct the frames. None of the existing AviSynth-based methods can deal with this.

Am I right in thinking it was only Droids that has a Japanese release, so for Ewoks we are stuck with this PAL video?

I've received a PM from Angel explaining why certain IP addresses match.

I'm now satisfied that Angel and Nebula are, in fact, two different people.

I've asked Jay to unban Nebula; we will of course still take action against anyone posting any more personal attacks or off-topic posts in the ESB:R thread.

Out of curiosity... what is this explanation?

While I'm not going to divulge details given to me in a PM, I will say in general terms that there are many valid reasons why two users might share an IP address.

For example, at one time Rob and Stinky-Dinkins both posted from the same workplace (as evidenced by the exchange here). Another time, when I enquired why two users shared an IP, I was told they were husband and wife.

If you took your laptop around to a friend's house and posted using their wifi, your posts would be logged with their IP address.

I guess after the JediTray incident(s), I was left a little more twitchy about IP addresses. I should have asked for clarification before applying an instant ban.

Anyway, Nebula's back, but is on thin ice if he doesn't practice a little civility.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

OK, to the stars - they stay this bright. This is not a whim of mine or anything, it's based on hard evidence that some of you may have seen. All evidence points towards the stars being this bright in the original; even the GOUT stars are this bright, only the faded levels make them kind of greyish but they are this big.

The 70mm scans also support the bright starfields. See this thread. (Interestingly, when you compare that shot on imageshack to the same one on jedi1.net, I see a slight levels difference.)
