Downloaded the sample.

I like the color choices. I'm also fine with the level of grain. However, I found the flickering/aliasing artefacts to be distracting and I think more work is needed on this.

What is your filter chain? I'm assuming you've got a stabilisation stage then an upscaling stage; if you're using AviSynth for these bits would you post your script?

I totally agree with you here M, I actually have mentioned this above already myself, and it has been brought to my attention in PM's as well, this is the only thing that bothers me now that we got the "red bleeding" issue taken care of, as much as I try not to look at it lol, my eyes still seem to zoom right in on it, We are discussing this now to see what we can do, from reading your response it seems you are willing to help?

Thanks for your feedback M, it is greatly appreciated.

I'd be happy to look at your upscaling/antialiasing method and suggest possible improvements.

'Raiding The Lost Ark' - a filmumentary. (Released)
Time

Watched this, enjoyed it immensely. I don't know Raiders as well as Star Wars so I learnt a lot of new stuff while watching. I found the commentaries from Mark Mangini particularly interesting.

I didn't notice any major problems with differing volume levels, but where did you interview Wolf Kahler? I thought my kids had woken up, then I realised the noises I was hearing were in the background of this audio!

If you ever do an updated version, let me know -  I have a suggestion for a minor improvement of the ordering of material. Overall, however, this "filmumentary" is hard to fault and with your new graphics skills I'd say makes this your best release to date.

OK! There is a lot I do not Know.

For one I thought that THX optimizer was specific to the movie it was on. When I would watch the GOUT I would use the GOUT THX optimizer if I watch the 2004 DVD I would use the 2004 DVD THX optimizer. Are all the optimizer’s the same?

No, your first statement is correct.  All the optimizers should be different to some degree.

The mind set behind THX is that the optimizer is passed through the same transfer process to the disc as the movie is.  As a result any variation that occurs in the film will similarly happen to the Optimode allowing you to compensate.

You've discussed this before. I thought it was utter tosh, and unless anyone can demonstrate two different DVDs with THX optimizers patterns having differing levels, I will continue to think it's utter tosh.

Removing a TV "bug" from the corner?
Time

Is it a semi-transparent logo? I developed an AviSynth script for the Rad source that was fairly successful:

Solid logos are more difficult, but if you have a logo-less DVD, and it matches up frame-for-frame with the HD source, then you should be able to upscale that portion and overlay it over the logo.

When did anyone ever suggest that the subtitles might have been yellow?

Just wanted to take this moment to say that on the 1977-1981 technicolor dye print that I saw in Baltimore this year, Greedo's subs were yellow.

regrading/editing original trilogy using blu-rays and german hdtv streams to remove bad but not all specialised/blu-ray changes (* unfinished project *)

Dont get it?

Interesting find with those TPM screenshots; it's frustrating to see images that aren't ruined by edge enhancement (as for the DVD & HDTV sources) or DVNR (the blu-ray) and to not know where they're from. I'm imagining some kind of promotional trailer.

And BTW there's more on that Predador release here:

(play spot the contradictions in the final conclusion!)

Info Wanted: Best source for the Mos Eisley speeder pass-by shot?
Time

Sort of a follow-up to this thread; what is the best source for the ~140 frames of the infamous Mos Eisley speeder pass-by shot?

This shot is one of the best examples from the GOUT DVD showing the detail loss as a result of DVNR smearing (upscaled to 720p):

Here’s the same frame from the French THX laserdisc release - more detail is retained, but overall it still looks like shit:

Quick question: do records really have better sound quality than CDs, or is that just hot air coming from nostalgic old fogies?

In theory, talking about sound quality only, the answer is no. (In practice however, vinyl is preferred over CD by many people, for very valid reasons).
