I made a series of jpgs named nxNNNN.jpg, NNNN being 0000-1941 and a bmp with the backdrop
BASH command (should work in ksh also, needs imagemagick)
for x in *.jpg;do echo -n "${x}"\ ;convert -black-threshold 20000 -transparent black "${x}" png:-|composite -gravity center png:- c.bmp png:"`basename "${x}" .jpg`".png;done
This gives me a series of PNG files that I then load into avisynth with the oneliner
ImageReader("nx%04d.png",0,1941,23.976)
which I load into virtual dub under wine and then encode normally.
EDIT:

Sample clip (13 MB, XviD)

I’ve been working on some way to stitch the GOUT rollup onto new footage for making an improved edit, but since all I really have to work with is simple editors like avidemux and vdub… it’s not coming out well, and I’m not sure what route would be best to take.
I’m thinking of possibly doing a whole new rollup, but I don’t really have the tools to do that. Recoloring the existing rollup from the GOUT works, but there’s no stars! (They aren’t really visible on my encode of the GOUT either.)
Unless maybe with ImageMagick or something I can take a bunch of stills, make them all transparent and add a starry background, which just might work o.o…

Makes me all the more impatient to see this done, I guess.

(btw, I had the OOT - well, 1985 OOT in FS - for only 2 years, before the SE came out, and I am slightly more familiar with SE for that reason...though I do like to make sure unmodified is available...)

Do you even read the other threads people suggest? Belbucus's different mixes (Including 35mm dolby stereo and '93) are already available in PCM format.
IIRC, they were on YSI links or something several months ago and are no longer there.

Has anyone else done this? I just did and am currently encoding a FLAC of it, if it would be of use to you guys (and I can tell it’s a bit different from the actual GOUT mix), I could put it on BT or something? I’m estimating it to be about 700 MB, as the ALAC I sourced from was.
In two places I had to stitch in 1993 audio for a fraction of a second, as my source was the time-compressed CED. Other places, I either added blank space, or stretched the background noise by duplication, whichever was closer to what was on the 1993 mix.
The most noticeable difference: right before Han says “17,000, these people must really be desperate”, Chewie does NOT grunt in the 2.0 as he does on the GOUT. As the 2.0 is a further evolution of the 4.2 mix and nothing not in the 2.0 is likely to be in the 4.2, it’s pretty obvious that Georgie’s claims of GOUT being “unaltered” are not quite true.
If I can find a better version of the mono mix than my current restoration - and then a 4.2 or 5.1 rip of the 4.2 mix - then I’ll be set

It's interesting to see these types of shots and see how an SE *could* have been done.

Screenshot of the "It's Secure" clip in Audacity and the same after a karaoke filter
The blank parts mark where I was only using the mono mix.
This is also just a draft, and I may do additional work. During at least one of the Beru lines I actually added the music back in underneath from the OST then cropped around the voice, so it actually never goes mono. This is the trick I prefer, but I don't know enough about the OST to do this.
Keep in mind that the Spanish mix is 2.0, it's not mono, although it has all the mono elements.
My current priority of tracks is this:
1. Spanish 2.0 from GOUT (main source)
2. English 1993 from GOUT (for most dialogue; note that this will inherently synch with the Spanish 2.0)
3. English 2004 2.0 (for "Close the blast doors" and the 3PO line - unless you know any other monoisms?)
4. Story of Star Wars (one Beru line and some of the loudspeaker voices)
5. English 1.0 from ITV VHS rip (last resort)
This is more of a proof of concept than anything else.

Some line timing is different between the English and Spanish tracks on the GOUT. (I mean R2 and Greedo) I have generally preferred the Spanish track as it reflects the mono mix.
I don't expect this to be the best possible reconstruction, but it will at least fulfill my desire of hearing the mono mix in stereo in reasonably good quality.
