Is Star Wars catering to girls now?
Time

Star Wars is catering for girls… it’s called Forces of Destiny. The zero budget flash animation/doll commercial. Everything else is pure lip service. They cast a wider net with the most recent stuff and the casting is done differently, sure. But broadening the demographic is different from when they actually try and please a particular group directly. See also: the 90s toyline that featured female characters wearing cloth outfits. Low effort, low return, same old. Girls have always liked SW obviously, but that’s not the same thing. Mega-corporations cater to what will sell and what sells rarely changes.

Here’s an excellent article on The Last Jedi and why it has elicited such a backlash from fans.

Insightful look on the film and its response (I guess I should say I don’t agree with everything said, but it’s worth reading):

Many quality, insightful and also challenging articles can be found at the Guardian & Observer (it’s Sunday sister paper) - pleasing to see them get some a mention and some love on here too 😃

I don’t think that site is related to those papers though.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

I just realised that Danny the Dealer from Withnail is the same actor who played Ric Olié.

Also I only remember this random TPM character because of this forum. What a time to be alive.

“Don’t get uptight with me young man. Cos if you do, I’ll have to give you a dose of medicine. And if I spike you, you’ll know you’ve been spoken to.”

Then again, I’d be nervous if any film I produced had a six-figure loss.

It’s not a loss though. It just didn’t meet projections. Maybe they needed to rethink their projections.

If they spent 500 million on it then that is a loss.

I don’t understand why so many people here are so eager to paint Solo as if it isn’t a box office failure. It’s not like any of you have a personal stake in it.

There are?

A box office failure is usually when a film doesn’t make it’s money back, yes? Well, we don’t know what the film cost, do we? (do we?) I don’t know where the ‘$500m’ figure comes from I see bandied around - a guess? (someone replicated the cost of Rogue One and added extra on for the re-shoots, maybe?)

Solo has certainly under-performed - in context it could be said it has flopped in comparison to the other recent releases - yet did anyone expect it get near the ST figures - or even R1? I imagine the big-wigs will be looking into it and trying to address it, should they feel the need?

Personally, I don’t care too much - it’s not like Disney is going to pull the plug on future Star Wars films after 1 under-performing film (despite many articles stating it would) after the 4 released so far - so we’ll still be very likely getting more SW content in the future (which is something I’d like to see).

Solo has flopped, there’s nothing more to be said. A film needs to make double its budget just to break even, then they can start counting profits. Roughly speaking if Solo cost 400 mil and only made 300, then that’s a 500 mil loss. Aka a box office bomb. You can still like it.

I found it half laughable half disgusting but it wasn’t painfully out of place like Leias return from space death scene

When I saw that scene my first thought was that she was force pulling herself to the ship. Why any SW fan would think it was something else is beyond me.

Agreed. Plus the classic theme was a nice touch.
