Return Of The Jedi's 40th anniversary
Time

UK Royal Mint to issue new coins for ROTJ Anniversary. Make your own jokes about Lucasfilm printing their own money I guess.

Oddly images used are clearly not from the right movie, possibly TFA? With a little Tatooine twin suns thing on the top from SW?

Edit: it is TFA as the background of this promo video shows https://youtu.be/eQx4h-CaAFQ Weird.

I’ve still never seen Temple of Doom. Maybe someday.

People have two main complaints about it, but even considering those I think it’s a spectacular action film in terms of set pieces and gags and weird fantasy stuff.

Anyway it goes:
Raiders 5/5
Temple of Doom 4/5
Last Crusade 4/5

Skull 2/5

The latter parts of the original trilogy are interchangeable in general quality for me, and are still amongst the greatest movie experiences. But I think Crusade while having some all time laughs in it has odd pacing problems in the first act. There’s also some weird moments in the finale like the ‘kneel before God’ thing. It’s clearly kneel and roll or lose your shins! Or that leap of faith which uhh… somehow never collected any dirt until Indy throws some on it.

Crystal Skull… eh. It’s toothless and dull. Even with fan edits. The effects are awful despite the occasional moments of old magic. They should have leaned into mythology and ancient art more when portraying the aliens. They should have fed someone into that tree cutter. They should have used Short-Round instead of introducing this other ‘son’. It should be the last good Speilberg movie but it’s the start of the end.

As for the new one, I will catch it later on streaming. If I want to see an action movie on the big screen with the kind of thrills the franchise offered back in the day there’s not much out here beyond the M:I series.

What do you think of The Prequel Trilogy? A general discussion.
Time

‘Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.’
‘Consume you it will, as it did Obi-wan’s apprentice.’

The only problem is there was no dark path, not really. Anakin killed a lot of Tuskens but it didn’t lead down a path of more bloodshed. He didn’t become more brutal and start executing separatist leaders or winning battles through darkside rage powers. They darkside barely consumed him at all, and his personality is basically the same once Hayden took the role. Where’s the twisted and evil stuff? He just does what Palpy tells him, but even this loyalty seems to come out of nowhere. Which is why his murder of children seems so out of place, he just seems to do it on whim. It’s more of a path to being a more of a dumbass.

Or… why even do the trench run at all? Just align an X-wing at a 90 degree angle to the Death Star surface and fly directly towards the exhaust port. Then fire torpedoes in a straight line into the port. Fire multiple proton torpedoes in case some are intercepted by laser turret fire, or first target the laser turrets themselves. You could fire the torpedoes from a great distance away. A computer-guided torpedo could hit the small exhaust port without a human pilot having to fly anywhere near the Death Star.

There is a line of dialogue about it being “heavily shielded” or “ray-shielded” in the rebel briefing? I took that as the reason why they couldn’t fire at it from distance or closer distances with “line of sight”, though I could be wrong on that, or misinterpreting it? I’ll have to watch go watch it, the whole film, again! 😃

I think they say that the ray shields are the reason they need to use proton torpedoes (as opposed to, I guess, just regular laser fire?). Maybe the idea is that ray shields only protect against energy weapons, but wouldn’t protect against a physical object like a torpedo.

Yes that is the idea. However… ray shields since the prequels are now ‘made of rays’ instead of protecting ‘against rays’ because they’re shown trapping people.

'Rey Skywalker' (Upcoming live action motion picture) - general discussion thread
Time

The sequel delves into Rey’s courageous endeavor to restore the Jedi Order, where she assumes the role of a mentor to two promising young students—a girl and a boy. As their training progresses, it becomes evident that the girl possesses an extraordinary abilities, destined to emerge as the future leader.

Yeah this sounds like bait.

I love the OOT fan projects here - yet still want an official unaltered OT release. You too?

Nice images! What on earth has happened to Lucasfilm’s once revered QA?

Yeah, that is also good reminder that many fans may not have likely heard of the Despecialized Edits or the TN1 4K projects, have the know how to acquire them and burn to disc, or to play them through a media center/server setup. That’s easy to forget for us more “online” and supposed tech-savvy fans.

These days everyone knows how to use a memory stick though, things are more accessible than ever. Hopefully the word gets around but ultimately most people are just going to watch what they are given on streaming.

As for the question at hand I’d still love an official release. But will it be marred by things like pink sabers, glitches, detail problems? Probably.

Okay so speaking of the event itself… from what I can remember I only saw ‘ANH’ at the time and it was cool. There was so much merch but the Dorito’s Tazo collection and all the Galoob stuff is what I remember the most. But back then I had the 1995 videos and so did others (cropped), or the 1992 ‘Fox Videos’ version with white borders (widescreen). That was still Star Wars for a while. Nobody could have suspected that LFL was slowly and surely drawing its plans against us…

Also, The Last Command I thought they kind of dropped the ball with the story. The whole Luke having an evil clone plot point (and that they got the DNA from his severed hand) I thought was pretty stupid. Especially the fact they named him Luuke. That was dumb.

Ah… the weirdness of 90’s EU.

Doesn’t hold a candle to the weirdness of '80s EU.

I think it goes back to the real problem that the 90s CGI effects weren’t there to improve things. Old elements that could have been improved or cleaned up were left because they didn’t intend to. It was just a way to do some proof of concept ideas (and money raising) for The Phantom Menace. Plus the marketing angle of course after the brand had become more associated with games and novels. 25 years of this crap just for a better box office in 1999.
