What Do YOU Think Star Wars Should Do Next?
Time

If fans can re-work these flabby eight part shows into a movie then they could too. It’s not the money for writers it’s the lack of direction, the lack of discipline. Bizarre choices and crappy film making in the Obi-wan show for example was edited down and corrected by fans for no pay. So if anything they need to spend less and make good storytellers work with that restriction.

Unfortunately they seem to have a myopic view and can’t see the real problems they’ve got or why these projects are so bad lately. Or they refuse to admit it’s bad. Or they don’t care. They certainly don’t seem to realise when something is working (Mando S1 and Andor) and when something isn’t. How can you fix such a lack of clearly defined quality control or even a lack of common sense? It seems pretty deeply ingrained now.

I understand the dislike for some recent productions, but what is “weird garbage” to you is someone else’s introduction to Star Wars and their absolute favorite storyline. I am hoping this thread can be somewhere that folks can analyze the Star Wars fandom itself and speculate specific ways to ensure better financial and critical success. Any particular storyline you’d like to see represented in theaters? What would you do if you were in charge of selecting the next movie to produce?

Well I can’t be held accountable for people that like the Disney products that represent how low quality standards have become. The nadir being things like Lizzo’s Mandalorian episode or that one about how Dr Pershing and the New Republic are total idiots. It feels like it’s written by idiots too, so the audience will get no quarter from me. I can only hope they are children and develop one day.

As for what I want, I already said anything goes. A fully fledged Western about outlaws or a TIE Fighter Academy movie would be my top picks. They could do a clever heist movie (instead of the version in Solo or Rogue One) or they could do a samurai epic set in medieval times. People must be tired of magic blood and destiny and whatever by now so I would start by losing that stuff. Get people that know how to write, slash budgets by half or more, do some real movies. If TV has to be a thing then look at Mando S1 and stop screwing around with a dozen references and cameos.

The Acolyte (live action series set in The High Republic era) - a general discussion thread
Time

After Ahsoka I’ve stuck to my guns and waited for it to be finished to assess whether it’s worth my time, but in this case I can’t see anything of real value. Looks like they squandered their first real foray into a new time period just like they wasted the whole “new galaxy” thing. Beyond Andor S2 I can’t imagine this downward spiral ending any time soon.

They should stop making weird garbage. Any time period, any genre, just stop with the bad scripts and low quality productions. Ideally in a movie format. But they couldn’t even get Obi-wan and Boba Fett right, and those were basically impossible targets to miss. Maybe their current infrastructure will collapse and it can be started over, but it’s hard to imagine.

Which one do you like more? The Prequels or the Sequels? And why?

Rey Skywalker is insane because it implies anyone can just be that, and yet no-surname no-family FINN doesn’t get closure. Also the movie itself might be watchable as pure spectacle if the visuals at Exogol weren’t wholly nausea inducing. I can only take so much, and basically everything after Kijimi falls apart from a story and action standpoint. Meanwhile the prequels barely work from page one so…

Bizarrely, unless I’m remembering wrong, the previous movie (Last Jedi) even set things up so that Rey would need a new lightsaber in Episode 9. Isn’t there a scene in Episode 8 where her lightsaber is ripped apart? You’d think that would nicely segue into a new, personalized lightsaber for Rey in Episode 9. But I guess not.

Concept art showed it being rebuilt as a dual-bladed staff, which would make far more sense.

Yellow Lightsabers

Nothing about the current explanation really makes sense. It was better when it seemed as though red was a choice by bad guys, but not always. As mentioned Leia had a red blade. Villains in Dark Forces II had different ones, even blue. It was more logical to assume the crystal was simply unique rather then being “changed” by good/evil deeds. Not everything about a character has to be linked to a weapon after all; it’s giving a tool too much importance.

In something like KOTOR the colours were coded to Jedi roles but I don’t like that idea either, it’s like being given a boring job interview instead of finding a crystal yourself. These days it seems like yellow was used to make Rey seem even more unique (until recent TV shows) but in the past it was used in merchandise because the manufacturers didn’t have the right production art or movie stills yet.

'Rey Skywalker' (Upcoming live action motion picture) - general discussion thread
Time

The current narrative is that all mainstream pop culture is bad, not just what falls under the (admittedly large) umbrella of Disney. Actual SW discussion seems to be dead as it once was at its height during the sequel trilogy. For me it became clear when that guy from Collider say he had been “busting his ass as a Star Wars fan” hahah jeez. The traffic those kind of videos got is clearly dead, so it’s just general entertainment for the masses / corporate decision making they dislike. And to be fair a Rey movie isn’t an artistic decision it’s just a branding one. They could do almost anything with the IP but they can’t get (or don’t have faith in) any proper writers apparently.

If you’re going to post on Twitter just do it rather than getting this all way off topic more than it already is. George isn’t ever going to be on there for real so I’m not sure what you’re worried about. The idea is to show solidarity and not let the cause be lost over time, hence a single hashtag that can be found by people on a wide platform. If you want to wax lyrical about anything else start a new thread of your own use any social media of your choice.

Still Luke running the Jedi religion and Leia running the government how does that work if the galaxy finds out Vader was their father. How do you prevent something like the first order from happening, which happened in Disney. or how does Luke prevent a student of his or several of them from going dark and upending everything.

Those are good points for development of drama in a film which will never exist.

Padme is a total cipher. Beyond some lip-service to her role in the Republic collapsing she’s there to give birth and vanish, as the OT dictates. Since the rise of the Empire and the birth of Luke is a given she has no agency in ROTS. Even in the previous films she exists as basic love interest since Anakin has to become evil. She does nothing to act in the face of obvious problems, which would make her have some impact or actual tragedy. A military creation act? That’s good and convenient. Oh wait it’s never mentioned again. Arguably she does a few things in TPM but it’s hardly relevant later. Which is funny because she should have some role in hiding Leia.

What do you think of The Prequel Trilogy? A general discussion.
Time

It should probably be a case of ‘the road to hell is paved with good intentions’ but instead it comes off as ‘dumb people are too dumb to do anything right’. Clearly the rise of the Empire wasn’t supposed to be the result of arrogance and hubris alone, but everything seems to point to that; especially in all the spin-off material. The clone army is baffling enough but we’re never shown things like an investigation into where Darth Maul came from. Diminished force powers don’t account for the lack of basic thinking.

My feeling after years of study is that Lucas doesn’t want to be reminded of work he wasn’t happy with at the time and only reminds him of what he lost. Every movie he swore it was the last and that he and Marcia could settle down after, but by the time RotJ was done, she was gone.

Doesn’t change the fact that it’s film history and should be preserved, but I get his hesitation now.

It’s not spite, it’s regret.

If he feels regret then he should show it and have some respect for the talent he collaborated with during those years. Instead it’s always him vs the studios, a rhetoric he continued during Red Tails period. Nobody gets me, nobody wants to take a risk, nobody understands my true artistic vision, etc. He spent a lot of energy and time and money on the work in the early days but jeez the tortured auteur thing and one standing alone is a sham and everybody knows it. He’s not David Lynch for crying out loud (someone who also had plenty of support from people close to him for a breakthrough 1977 movie).
