2007 Star Wars DVD Collection Release

Do you really think Lucas is even aware that Blade Runner and Close Encounters are being released in their original versions? I would doubt that even Spielberg is. Furthermore, I doubt Lucas would even care had anyone bothered to tell him. To him its a non-issue: "oh yeah, Close Encounters in its original version, thats nice. When's lunch?" I'm sure the people that run the home video department of Lucasfilm are very much aware of everything thats going on and would love to have another release to sell to us but I just don't think its something that Lucas has really even considered. His ego is just too big. Thats why he wore a Han shot first T-shirt--he thinks he's being funny. So far removed from the reality of the travesty he has undertaken he actually thinks that being ironic about it is funny. I think that shows just where his head is--somewhere lost in space.

I would rather imagine that Spielberg knows about the Close Encounters release. Maybe the studio went over his head or he doesn't quite have complete control over it (which I very much doubt), but I'd be fairly certain that he knows about it. Call it a hunch.

There will never be the 30th anniversary DVD boxset "holy grail"
Why is this even on the boards?

Perhaps not, but that doesn't mean that there wouldn't be a DVD release of the SEs AGAIN. And you never know.

My comment in another thread:

I think Lucas is so screwed up these days that he is going to clean up the OUT and act like it was his idea to do that all along. Soon he will be saying crap like, "I never really wanted the SEs, but I was listening to so many people around me..." He will do a total 180 and pretend that the public were the ones that forced him to do all of this crap...

Luca$ is addicted to hype (and money). He has no more movies to get people excited about...he won't be able to be out of the SW spotlight for long, and my prediction is found in my comment above...even more so now that Spielberg is going the other direction w/ this new Close Encounters release...

He's milked SW for all it's worth and the only thing left now is a return to the ORIGINAL versions. Kind ironic when you think about it...

"And now the circle is complete..."

Yeah, I hope so. But remember the TV series that he wants to run for 500 episodes.

I still think that this will be a typical Lucas fast one where they say they won't but still do, and we WILL see the OOT again sometime very soon.

I hope to god that you're right, but I've long since learned not to trust to hope, for it is forsaken in these lands.. As I say, even assuming that there WILL be a DVD set, if there's no restored OOT, then, pardon my language, but I really don't give a fuck.

16 discs? That makes no sense. Let's pretend for a moment that hell has frozen over and the OOT is in the set. The PT+the SEs=6+the special feature discs for the PT that already came out=9. Even if there is a god and the OOT was included too, that's still only equal 12. If I were dreaming, I would say that there were extras for each movie (PT and SE) then that would=12 discs, plus the OOT=15+random disc of other extras=16. But really, I've long since given up even dreaming about something like that happening. Again, as I say, Lucas knows that there's a dedicated group of fans who want a restored OOT, and it would be ideal to release it in a massive boxed set because he would know that people like me would pay pretty much anything for them, but I doubt that they'd do that. It makes too much sense.

The LD SAID it was the theatrical cut, but wasn't; this evidently will be. What theatrical version of Jaws? I was under the impression that there was only one version of Jaws.

If it doesn't include the OOT, what the hell difference would it make?

Don't worry too much about JR, guys. He lives to work himself into a tizzy over us on these boards. It's an odd sort of love.

The only think that gets me in a tizzy is finally seeing how you edited Jar Jar Binks out of Ep1. That'll rock.

And yet the original version will still be available in crisp, high quality.

I will say it again: if a release has the OOT restored and remastered properly, I will pay any price.

I wouldn't say such things on a public forum. Next thing you know, LFL is releasing it just the way we want it, but at a cost of $500.

The sad thing is, I might consider it; I've always felt that, from a marketing standpoint, it would be brilliant of them to release it an a package with all of the other stuff they've been considering to ensanre me. As I said, any release at all would make me ecstatic.

Forgive me if it's been posted already, but last week McCallum officially spoke up on the matter. In a nutshell, no HD until there is a clear winner in the format war.

Not a surprise; that's what all of us expected and figured would be the policy of LFL from day one.

Shouldn't you be finishing up editing someone else's work?

Getting there....glad to see you're still interested in the project. There's obviously not enough excitement in your own life to keep you away from these boards.

Yeah, I was just talking to your Assistant Editor the other day... he said it sucks.

Yet he still makes the original version available in high quality. Unlike a certain some else who edits other people's work. Some who's initials are GL.

Oh the ol' "GL didn't have anything to do with the last 2 OT movies"... that's a classic!

I've never said that he didn't have anything to do with any of them; quite the contrary. He had a lot to do with them. Of course, the crux of the issue, which you keeps sidestepping, is that the original versions aren't available to us, except in a substandard release. You keep criticizing people for making fan edits (Which I don't, by the way.), yet GL is doing the same thing to the OOT, and you don't seem to have a problem with that. This is what I struggle with. Plus, fan edits will be seen by, what, a hundred people, tops? Hardly anyone knows that they exist. That's hardly rewriting history on movie that changed the face of the cultural landscape. It'd be like if I drew a mustache on a classmate in my yearbook or wrote fanfiction. It doesn't change the work or the person; I just amuse myself. Yet, GL does. AND THE ORIGINAL VERSION IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THE QUALITY THAT IT DESERVES. And you have no problem with him.

Besides, they don't exist anymore. He said so himself. So that means that people can do whatever they damn well please with them. If the don't exist, he has no right to get down on bootleggers. Fans want to preserve the movies, because they clearly love them a hell of a lot more than he does.

The sound issues with the '04 DVDs (like the missing force theme from the death star attack) were actually more bothersome to me than the color issues (the one time I watched them, that is).

But then, I'm not as much of a purist as some. I don't care about the "original-ORIGINAL" soundtracks- the ones they did for the DC/Faces laserdiscs (that were ported over to the '06 DVDs) are fine to me, and I don't really care about the original scroll (since I saw SW for the first time theatrically in '82 with the amended scroll already added).

I just want the non-CGI'd versions in HD now, and like I've said here many times previously, the '06 DVDs were the last video purchase I'm making from Lucasfilm LTD until they are released.

It'd be easy to include all of the necessary soundtracks and the original crawl, especially with amount of space HD would have.

Ok, fine, but that doesn't mean it's literally being compared to a life-and-death situation. There's a difference between people dying and a set of films.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking of.

Isn't the simplest thing for the petition to just be "Hey, release the Original version Star Wars trilogy on Bluray"? I don't have a bluray player, but it's simple, clear, and requires a new transfer. (Bluray because it's Fox.)

Unless HD wins the format war. And then there will be whatever comes after HD and BR. The OOT needs respect always, regardless of the format.

What?

We'd need someone with clout willing to champion the OOT; Kevin Smith, Leonard Maltin, Robert A. Harris, whomever. We'd also need to take out adds in magazines if possible, and do everything in our power full fucking force.

Except that one results in 3000 troops dying plus countless others and the other is a make-pretend kids movie.

I've been saying for years some fans need to get a grip on reality and quotes like that one put a big giant bow on it.

It was an analogy, not a direct comparision. I think that thousands of deaths are far more important than a set of films. I think that anyone with a brain would feel that way. I was just an analogy. And lets not get into a political discussion.

If he does that, I'd be ecstatic. Really, I don't care what his cockamamy reason would be as long as I had the DVDs that I wanted.
