TCM showed THX-1138 the other day. I’m really looking forward to finally seeing it in a few days as I DVR’d it!

Don’t bother. That version is probably the Special Edition that Lucas did in 2004, adding a bunch of terrible CGI that ruins the claustrophobic feel of the original. You can find the original version on archive.org if you want to see it.

Where on the site?

Info: The films of Sergio Leone - The best available versions...
Time

Unless of course, ahem, anyone wants to invite me to MySpleen should I join 😉. The Kino disc apparently has gamma problems. I’m not 100% sure what that means, but I do know that the disc I watched last night looked way too…muddy, for lack of a better term.

Incidentally, and I don’t know if it’s forbidden to talk about this or not, so any mods can feel free to edit my post, but apparently the guy who does those Hong Kong Rescue reconstructions did one for Duck You Sucker too. Apparently, though, with the exception of a horse fall, the UK Eureka disc is uncut and looks good. I wish Arrow could get the Dollars trilogy in the UK or something.

Apparently there’s a new version of DYS out from MOC in the UK, and it’s cut for 6 seconds of animal cruelty, but has the corrected soundtrack. I wish MOC could get the other Leone films. I have the German releases of the first two films, the Kino of GBU, and the Paramount of West. I guess these will have to do for now. Wouldn’t it be nice if we got a proper boxed set?

So the Criterion Channel will be hosting this movie next month. Bet they’ll sacrifice their integrity and participate in Lucas’ historical revisionism like TCM do now. I’d love to be wrong though.

It’s going to be the new version, yes; https://youtu.be/1x6sOHzgIyw?t=7

Though I personally would go so far as to say “sacrificing their integrity.” There’s hardly anything they or TCM can do about it. They “rent” the film from the company that owns them (Fox? Dinsey? I’ve lost track) and the new version is what they’re given. They’re probably counting their losses as the film is at least available in some fashion.

Then they should choose not to show the movie at all, though I confess that for financial reasons, that’s probably not possible.

I doubt there’s any serious financial loss for not showing the film. They probably feel that it’s better for people to see the new version of the film than to simply never see it at all. If I was in their place I’d do the same thing. Better that people see an (obviously) altered version than to never be exposed to it at all. It’s a really weird situation that thankfully only apply to a handful of films.

I’d feel that now showing the film is better than showing that abomination, but hey, I’m on this website, so I would 😉.
