Why not make a “5.1” mix and keep the rears quiet? All the sound is left, right and bass.
Hello there everyone! As some may remember, I GOUT synced the PSB 16mm soundtrack and I can confirm that there are actual pretty substantial changes made to the Mono mix in Empire. Off the top of my head:
“The first transport is away” line is different and plays a second later than in the stereo mix.
The hidden stormtrooper that shoots 3pO is differently voiced.
Yoda shrieks differently when Luke first points his blaster at him ("…like we’re being watched!").
There is added 3PO dialogue in the Carbon Freezing Chamber.
So unlike Jedi, which really just seems to be a re-leveled folddown, Empire is the real deal.
In any case I don’t mind GOUT syncing this latest 16mm mix for posterity’s sake. I already talked to Catbus about it but I’d just need the wav files from Puggo whenever he gets the chance…and I’m traveling it up until around the 20th of August. So don’t get too excited lol.

Interesting: those outdoor Ben/Luke scenes remind me of Harmy’s 2.0 release.
He had used shots timed to photos sent by MikeV and they were really overexposed and was a matter of much debate. I guess this shows it probably was a little hot.
I’m digging these colors too Dr. Dré! They look VERY much like the Senator photos, but without the bias of the camera taking the picture.
I second what other people are saying: it’s a tad too dark. But I’ll wait for you to perfect your scanning process before making any more judgments.

There are a few other films Lucas bit off of in small ways but this is the most notable of them.
Quite clearly that was just a bad prediction of OT. Just because I can predict momentous events, such as solar eclipse, it does not mean I can take credit for the event itself.
This is maybe the biggest WTF reply in all of OT history. And there have been quite a few…
Perhaps that last line reflects Luke’s idea that the Force has done more harm than good and perhaps wishes it would die off.

I’m sorry, but what is “GOUT”? I’m brazillian and can’t understand all the words! ;p
But, the video quality depends on somethings like codecs and some filters, you can “mask” it!
The GOUT refers to the 2006 DVD set that included the original unaltered trilogy as bonus discs. These were just mastered from Laserdisc so the quality wasn’t great.
Gout is also a medical reference to a type of foot arthritis so it’s a bit of a pun. (Gota is the Portuguese word I think…)
The Mono mix for Empire is indeed its own thing rather than a fold down.
I should make a Youtube video showing all the differences.
I would also like to think that there is a higher quality version of this mix somewhere. I remember someone saying on some site (not this one) that they had a weird sound mix on one of their Empire VHS tapes.
Like Poita said: Star Wars has a classical Hollywood look to it: lots of bright light, contrast etc. Empire has a more realistic look to it. They may have used a higher ISO filmstock or pushed it during development to make it more sensitive to light.
It’s not the age of the print, it’s just the print itself.
You’re comparing two very different film stocks/processes. And two films that were shot very differently (Leia on the Tantive is very bright, Leia in the Hoth base is dark).
To answer your answer: yes this film was more than likely that grainy in 1980.
I don’t know when people last saw an actual film print in a theater but whenever my local art theater has a film print of an older movie I am surprised by how soft it looks. Even a modern film like The Game which I saw a couple months ago was soft and grainy.
Technicolor prints (and nitrate prints) are amazing to watch projected. Cheap Eastman prints… meh.
