I found it weird that you're using a VGA to s-video capture. Is there any way to extract the actual video files from the CD-ROM's contents? (I'm presuming it's in Quicktime).

The official DVD covers aren't as terrible as these Microsoft Paint mock-ups, but why, in the name of god, did they put Mark Hamill's post car/wampa accident face on the front!? And it's a terrible picture at that! And it's badly super-imposed....GAH! It's so bad. I've seen better covers on this website.

Wow, this is pretty impressive! To me, the quality is equal to Zion's first capture project before he joined the x0 project. Good job!

I know this is a little late, but I just got the Rowman revised DVDs of your first project in the mail yesterday (thanks youknowwho!) and I was very impressed with the quality on that version. For some reason the caps on these threads make it look much crappier than it does in practical viewings (i.e.: a CRT 4:3 television). I just wanted to give you props.

I also think it's great that people are dedicated to improve other people's past work in order to achieve as best a quality as possible. Anyway, enough ranting.

But will Blu-ray (or HD-DVD...whoever wins) players support the original codec that the x0 capture was recorded with? If so, that would be awesome!

Which brings me to my second question: how good are programs/hardware that can upconvert from 480 to 720/1080? I understand that it doesn't add any detail, but rather repeats lines of resolution, but does it give any noticible boost in quality?

Sorry, I heard somewhere on this thread that the idea was floating around to do an "HD" version (I understand it won't be true HD).

Oh god, can we please stop this annoying topic of what to call what? I'm sure that no matter what name we call it, we'll all still be able to make sense out of what the hell they're trying to say.

But back on topic. Cowclops, if you could send us some updated comparison pics, that would be really awesome. I'm really interested in seeing how much you've improved this version from your last.

Yeah, those menus look cool! I prefer the beginning with the star field blasting in the background to the sound of a lightsaber. My only gripe is when you click on sound options or whatever, and vader says "Prepare your troops for a ground assault" and there's that awkward cut to a close up before it goes to another menu. It all seems so awkward.

maybe if you got rid of that close up?

Just my 2 cents.

Is there a DVD-ROM folder that can be deleted?

If not...um...try a different program?

Keep in mind that even though a DVD advertises that it can hold 4.7 gigs, in reality it can only hold about 4.24. Some mathematical issue, I can't recall off the top of my head.

Moth3r: PAL, in theory, is in many ways superior to NTSC. In fact, the only downside to it (IMO) is that films are sped up 4% from 24FPS to 25FPS which causes a pitch change (which I personally find annoying, but only when songs are being played). PAL has more resolution than NTSC and there is no 3:2 pulldown when telecine-ing film. HOWEVER, because laserdiscs are an analogue format, you need a lot of good hardware in order to get a nice, clean signal. This is what makes the X0 so unique. If you want more information about the X0 player, go to the official X0 website.

In any case, there is no known PAL laserdisc player with such incredible hardware and because of that, there is a lot more noise/artifacts/etc.

The first post in this thread was by Laserman and in it, he posted some pictures to show how clean the X0 NTSC signal was compared to the PAL (captured from a 925, which, according to him, is the best PAL player around). Just from those posts, you see that the NTSC, despite its flaws, has a much better picture. In this case, practicality outweighs theory.

iRatanplan: modifying an X0 has been talked about already in this thread, and its subject almost caused the the project to be abandoned. The simple answer is No. The hardware is dedicated NTSC (from what I read on the website, it has 5 different NTSC encoders), and plus motors are different between pal and ntsc laserdisc players (they spin at different speeds). Let's not also forget that the X0 is a 7,000 dollar player. Who the hell would want to modify a 7000 dollar investment?

Ahh, I see. Wow, this project is hard core. I gather that the Definitive Sets have been captured and is being worked on now. Is the team then hoping to get the Faces set captured as to mix the two together and get the best of both transfers - or maybe to draw comparaisons between the two and pick the best version to be considered gold master?

(anyone thought about sending a fruit basket to the guy actually transfering this... to show our thanks? :-P )

Whoa, Karyudo! Chill out! He and I are not entirely talking about the tired subject of anamorphic versus letterbox. We're talking about information on the LEFT and RIGHT sides of the screen that are lost on older televisions due to what i believe is called overscanning. This is an even bigger problem for films that originate from 1.33 sources since there's even more information lost all AROUND the screen. That's why there are action safe zones in FCP...to make sure that vital information, like titles, will be visible to people who still have those TVs.

What I meant by "resizing" was taking the image and making it smaller so it fits inside these "safezones" which is a really bad thing to do since not only do you lose resolution but it leaves this annoying black square around your image.

Anamorphic...letterbox...I'm personally not taking sides on this debate which has been talked about way too much as it is on this forum site already.

Thanks laserman for clearing that up. It just makes me even more anxious for those films. I'm glad you decided against resizing the image. That is totally unacceptable in my book too unless it is absolutely necessary (example: I was making a DVD of my school's senior film projects and this one person had text on the edge of the frame throughout their film, and I was forced to resize the image so you could actually read them!).

It cracks me up that we're calling it the "Luke's tache" picture.

But in all seriousness, did anyone notice this until it was pointed out? I know I didn't! I personally don't think it's that big of a deal. At least it's not Pan and Scan, badly overscaned on an old television (the way most of us even remember watching these films in the first place).

Just to recall what S7en had mentioned which I found interesting: Why *does* the TR47 bootleg have more picture information?

Personally, the information lost is not a whole lot and doesn't bother me (especially when you take into account more determining factors like noise and sharpness). But I'm sure that it may undermine the x0 project's philosophy which is to preserve as much as possible the original trilogy.

(BTW: I'm not dissing the x0 project in any form or manner, but merely giving a little helpful criticism)

Wow, those comparaisons are AMAZING!

The DVD seems just an edge bit sharper, but if you zoom in, you'll notice digital artifacts around Shaw's head in the DVD pic...this is absent from the laserdisc picture. Of course, the x0 dvds will have these artifacts once they're compressed...But still, the eyebrows and the correct color already blows GL's "official" version out the water.
