Harmy has (rightly) lifted that request on the grounds that he doesn't want to censor people's criticisms and discussions.

Personally, I would be *very* interested to see people talk about areas of the Despecialization where the process is flawed. The only places where I've felt the seams showed were the shot of the speeder in Mos Eisley and in RETURN OF THE JEDI where the added smoke to the GOUT-frames of Jabba fades away in a very unnatural manner, losing density, then staying consistent for a bit, then losing density again, then staying consistent, then disappearing entirely. But my interest isn't in criticizing Harmy, but rather in better understanding the process and the work and maybe what solutions could be used, if any exist.

If the shot of the speeder in Mos Eisley was a grainy, blurry mess in the original version because they didn't have enough time to do the composite as well as they could have and that's how it'd be no matter where the shot was taken (unless it's a new HD transfer) -- well, I just learned something I didn't know before! Thanks! :-D

No problem! I think that since a lot of us have never seen a high definition version of the OUT, it's hard to really know these sorts of things, unless you hang out on this board a lot! :D

As per the Jedi/Smoke shot...that was necessary since George Lucas had spliced in a cutaway shot of Bobba Fett flirting with one of the dancing girls for the SE. Since Harmy didn't have a good source to fill in those few seconds, he was faced with a choice. One of them was cutting away to Chewbacca - making the scene less gringe worthy, but changing it all the same - or spicing in the GOUT which would have stood out like a sore thumb...but being the genius he is, he came up with a compromise of just matting the GOUT jabba around an HD matte of the palace and filled the frame with smoke so as to hide the obvious drop in quality.

I don't have a print of the OT with me at the moment, but keep in mind that the lightsaber effects done in 77 were somewhat different compared to the ones seen in Empire and Jedi.

I feel like in the first film they were seen as pulsating beams of energy and not a long laser glo stick as we see in later films.

Plus, Harmy used the GOUT to fill in the saber effects. I think that's pretty authentic.

Thank you for the update and letting us know what was up. I hope everyone who was affected is back to normal and apologize if my asking what was wrong seemed rude. I was honestly curious and not in the least bit upset for not having yet received a confirmation.

I can't wait to see the new site and be part of all the excitement!

So, I posted in the suggestions forum, but no one seems to really read the posts there, so I thought I'd promote it here:

Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years

Fox is retaining the rights to the earlier films, so nothing new except new stuff not to buy. Unless this'll get the OOT out, which it won't, let's move along. Basically it means we'll be seeing more SW stuff than ever, but who cares? The OOT is still doomed.

I don't see at all how this is doomed. Perhaps Disney owns the future, but Fox must know that they control what people have been craving... The original trilogy. That is a gold mine. Now that George is pretty much out of the picture, I can't see why Fox wouldn't want to jump in and cash in on this valuable asset.

Definitely feeling the hate/love feeling of this announcement. It just feels so out from left field. Disney buying lucasfilm AND announcing a new star wars film??

Hmm...although with all the star trek next generation blurays I've been watching, I'd say we've gotten stuck in a wormhole where time, space and thought all become one. Shit. Reverse polarity!

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

The smearing is caused by an archaic system of dirt removal from the early nineties that is extremely outdated by today's technology. It looked fine on smaller CRT televisions for which it was intended, but the defects are much more apparent on HD televisions.

The reason it looks worse on this particular shot is because it's one of the 'crappiest' shots in the whole film due to generation loss with the numerous special effects composites. Even on 35mm elements this shot is full of dirt and grain - it almost looks like 16 or 8mm. So the dirt removal system kicked into overdrive in that shot and created those weird artifacts.

PS78: Pre-ANH Star Wars Bootleg VHS from 1978 ***"RAW" DVD RELEASED***

I would vote for

DVD9

AC3

I say no to PCM because you're wasting valuable bitrate for a 70s era mono VHS soundtrack which already has a pretty poor frequency response of roughly 100 Hz to 10 kHz.

You're basically inflating the file size for little to no gain, wasting data that could be used to make a higher rate video encode.

Puggo Strikes Back! (Released)
Time

Puggo, I've been trying to get ahold of you for a couple weeks concerning a project I had in mind and wanting to know how to get ahold of some elements in uncompressed format, but I've heard nothing back. I am not sure if PM is a bad way to get ahold of you, or perhaps you've been busy, which I can understand completely - but I hope you have received my messages and I hope it would be possible to work something out.

Thank you.

What we've figured out in the changes thread: shots with visual changes/release

SW: 254/1997 : 137/2004 : 30/2011

ESB: 333/1997 : 206/2004 : 7/2011

RotJ: 180/1997 : 79/2004 : 63/2011

Well I'll be...

I stand corrected. The proof is in the pudding.

I have to say, I'm actually a bit stunned at the relatively low amount of shot changes in Jedi. It seems like a completely different film nowadays.

(inner voice: Perhaps that is due to the fact that a lot of the changes weren't merely recomposites, but gigantic annoying changes, like Jedi Rocks, flirting Boba, blinking Ewoks, Anakin ghost head and crappy Jabba CGI doors?)
