Also, was this guy in TFA, or is this a new character?
He was in TFA. I believe he was piloting an X-Wing…
I’d seen it twice in theaters, but my wife never did and she bought the bluray so we could watch it together. (Ain’t she the best?!)
Anywho, her feelings pretty much reflect mine: a good film that borrows a bit too heavily from previous films. She was surprised that she enjoyed it so much and won’t stop saying so… But she did complain about a NEW Death Star and how the place where Han Solo dies is too similar to Cloud City.
I still enjoyed the film a 3rd time which is something I can’t say about the prequels (and it wasn’t from a lack of trying).
I was thinking more of actual PR agents writing stupid stuff in comments.
This stuff just cracks me up.
I see Lucasfilm’s PR is in fullswing…
No but it has layers of color spectrum sensitive siler halides. If I’ve understood the algorithm correctly this brings them back to their correct quantities of Red Blue and Green.
I think that’s just the 97 that has it. This was also sourced form a 16mm print, so it should be a fully authentic mono track.
The mono track on Harmy’s version of Empire is sourced from a 16mm print. The one in Star Wars is a restoration done by an old member here who sourced it from old European VHS broadcast recordings (with some down mixed stereo mixes and soundtrack CDs to fill in missing gaps).
As far as the gunshots go… They should be in the mono track. Here’s what is should sound like compared to modern mixes:
I have scanned that print, it was unfortunately infested with mold.
Gross. Is it unrecoverable?
Some people were saying that the LD was “cropped”, which isn’t the case. The Blu-ray release had (slight) open mattes, opening it from 1.85:1 (the original theatrical ratio) to 1.78:1 (the HDTV standard). Just thought I’d throw my opinion into the ring and say we should crop the BD to 1.85:1 to really get an “authentic” theatrical version.
The original aspect ratio is 1.66. In American theaters, this would have been cropped to 1.85.
16x9 is much closer to the original aspect ratio than 1.85 but in all honesty, there isn’t THAT much difference between 1.66, 16x9 and 1.85. You’d really need to be pixel peeking to notice.
Also remember that this film was rendered at 1536x922 for its original theatrical release so there won’t be detail that magically appears because it’s transferred to film…
I do agree it’d be nice to preserve that original render.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. There’s still plenty of meat on that bone. Now you take this home, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you’ve got a stew going!
Anyone who doesn’t get this quote is missing out on one of the smartest comedies ever made. By the way, Mavimao, I think I’d like my money back…
I honestly can’t place where the quote is from. I would definitely like to know what one of the smartest comedies ever made is (that is, if I haven’t seen it already and just don’t remember the quote).
Here’s some money. Go see a star war.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. There’s still plenty of meat on that bone. Now you take this home, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you’ve got a stew going!
Both get around on self-levitating machines…
two things doc…
This is worthy of a Nobel Prize. Not joking, millions could benefit from this technology.
I think you would end up removing any intentional color timing from the film. Think about it. Take a photo, adjust the colors without clipping any of them too badly. Take the original photo and do it again. Do it in whatever color space you want. Now hit the button on each of the differently timed photos. They all get back to being pretty neutral, right? I’m not complaining, as this is an amazing tool in color recovery, but I don’t think you can say these were the colors on opening day.

Perhaps if you were color correcting the original negative, but a print that’s already been corrected… The intended colors would still be there if I understand this algorithm correctly.
“Daddy, what is that dark place over there?”
“That is the General Star Wars discussion sub forum. You must never go there.”
^^ Again, it’s execution. Having Anakin have a chip on his shoulder was never the problem. The way he was written, directed and acted was.
Kylo Ren was believably angry, hostile and immature. Anakin wasn’t.
Well, in the Clone Wars miniseries he was believable. Havent seen the CG version.
Wow, I never realized that I should apologize for having a different opinion than the majority of the people and politely expressing it. Jesus.
I’ve gone back 4 pages in this thread and couldn’t find anything anyone was disagreeing with you about. I’m a bit confused…
Back when I started, this site was manly
I take umbrage at that! This site is still quite manly!
The ran in Span falls manly in the plans.
As someone who’s been here since 2005, there have always been crappy people. But the thing to remember is that this site has always persevered and the good people have stayed and the bad ones have left or been banned.
Back when I started, this site was mainly just a site for people to crap on George Lucas not releasing the original trilogy, signing a petition to try to convince him to do so and trading LD rips that only looked good on a small CRT.
While everyone and their Moth3r was trying to create the best capture of this once-awesome analogue medium, there was supposed to be one that ruled them all… and created quite a shitstorm in the process: the X0 project. This team had massive promise and a website and even merchandise! People (including me) gave donations and all of this hype led to the greatest fizzling out of all times. I, and many others, understood that sometimes these things happen, but there were plenty of furious members who demanded their money back.
Then there was the GOUT and the despair and pages and pages of bickering about “Cheap George”.
Then Harmy came along and his thread is filled with pages and pages of one-posters asking for invites to MySpleen.
Let’s also not forget about Team Negative One… Or the new forum software…
While Harmy and the new movies have created an upsurge in new members, having crappy personalities on this site is nothing new. They’ve all just been banned or have left. So, let’s be civil here guys. Getting furious about why Mon Mothma is at Yavin base, or having a hissy fit because people don’t appreciate “the finer qualities” of AOTC is just embarrassing.
I pondered about how the movie would end the other night and thought it would be cool if, after stealing the plans and transferring them to Leia, Felicity Jones’ character is captured and put in the detention area in the Death Star. There are shots of her being interrogated and what not. Then she hears the muffled sounds of blaster fire, and then a voice from the other side of the walls “my name is Luke Skywalker, I’m here to rescue you…” A few more shots of time passing (the brass maybe asking her who these two men and their Wookie were) and then alarms go off. People are running around, the station starts to rumble, the lights flicker and she understands what is happening and says, “They did it…” And then… Explosion.
Oh wow, it’s quite sad how little detail is gained by going from the DVD to the Bluray… Seeing as Techniscope is essentially the same negative space as laying two 16mm frames side to side, they must have erased a lot of the grain and hence the detail.
Imagine if the crew of the Serenity were hired by the rebellion to get the plans… #nerdgasm
She is kind of plump.
Huh? First, there’s nothing wrong with people being “plump” and second, where are you from? Somalia? She doesn’t look “plump” at all…
The real problem with AOTC is that the idea is sound but is ruined by the execution.
Harmy pointed out that the synopsis of this film is probably the strongest in the three prequels: there’s been an assasination attempt on a senator and one jedi is sent to protect her and one is sent to investigate. The jedi and the senator fall in love (which is forbidden) and the other jedi discovers a gigantic military build up operation.
There’s a great story here! But George’s weaknesses in storytelling and direction hamper the whole thing and the execution is lousy.
I do think one shouldn’t nitpick too much with this movie, but unlike other films with glaring plothole issues that you can forgive, AOTC is so boring and badly acted that these plotholes just stare at you like a thousand deer in headlights.
Isn’t Felicity Jones’ character supposed to be Han Solo’s ex girlfried?
Nope, that was Bria Tharen. Felicity’s character’s name is Jyn Erso.
Some are speculating that she might be the mother of Rey with Luke.
I know they’re not the same character. I just had a flashback to my constant eye rolling when reading that trilogy.
