My new laserdisc will be shipping soon. Hopefully the iso will be released within a week or so.
Some more research reveals that the glare from that first shot is also on the original DVD, but not in the same place as the 35MM. Looks like theyāve been altering this movie since its initial home video release. Even more reason to preserve the 35MM.

A comparison of some of the Blu-ray frames VS the Promo stills. The promo stills are in pretty bad quality, but note how much darker they are as well as the reddish tone. Also note that on the first image, part of the glare from the sun has been removed on the blu-ray.

Iām starting a donation pool for scanning the print. Itās about 180$ if it does NOT need cleaning, but it might be more if it does. Well, all releases have been from the raw computer files, not from film. The film I remember having a much warmer tone to it. Also, the audio on the blu ray has an added music cue that wasnāt on any other release, and that I donāt recall from the theater.
I was actually working on a project that I never finished where I was going to āfilmizeā the blu-ray, using trailers and promo photos as color reference. I cancelled that project before announcing it in hopes that something like this would come along. If only I didnāt have to buy christmas presents, I would buy it and get it scanned myself.
If I had the money, I would totally go for this.

As Iām sure you all know, David Byrneās cult classic film, True Stories, was finally released on blu-ray by the Criterion Collection. I never thought Iād see the day where Iād be unhappy with their work, but here we are.
The big draw for the blu-ray, as with any criterion release, is that the original filmmakers got involved with the restoration. I donāt know if Byrne is going blind or not, but the blu-ray is severely lacking as far as color is concerned. As you will see below, the 1999 DVD had nice warm colors where browns, reds, and grays were all nice and visible. The criterion blu-ray has a bad case of tinting. Looks like a bluish green to meā¦
But wait, it gets worse. The blu-ray audio has been upscaled from itās original stereo to 5.1 in a brand new mix. Havenāt had the time to compare with the DVD yet, but itās not sounding too good.
This is all VERY unusual for Criterion to do. Typically, they keep the Original audio, and the colors on their blu-rays are always perfect. Well, I guess Iām gonna have to do some fixing. Iāll get an MOV out as soon as I can. Stay tuned.
Well, after carefully looking at the laserdisc, it seems to have the same color grading as the DVD and Blu-ray, but the VHS still appears to have a more warm tone to it. Either way, It seems like it might be completely unnecessary to continue this project. The only real problem with the blu-ray is the missing acapella at the beginning, but I personally donāt see even that as much of a reason to continue.
I think Iām gonna mark this project as cancelled, but if you want a nice quality version of the artwork I made, shoot me a PM.

Out of curiosity, I bought the VHS of this movie to see how it looked. From all the copies Iāve seen (VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray) Iād say I was wrong about the blue tint. Although the blu ray is a little brighter. The DVD and VHS have a nice reddish yellowish tone, and so does the trailer. The blu-ray seems to have a green tint, so that will be important to change.
Still working on V3. Just need to take care of the bonus features, then build the iso.

Really? Maybe itās just the Mixing differences I noticed. I remember the movie would be really quiet, and then get really loud at scenes with music or any sort of action. Either way,the blu-ray DOES omit a part at the beginning.
I do have some good news though, thereās a lasderdisc on LDDB at a semi reasonable price. I made an offer, but even if its rejected Iāll still buy it. Iāve been wanting to do this restoration for a while.
Well, I ordered a new copy of the Blu-ray. In the meantime iāll continue work on the fullscreen restoration. The laserdisc goes for quite a bit, and at the moment I donāt have enough for it. Iāll keep an eye out for it on LDDB though.
Does the UK Blu-ray contain the acapella at the beginning thatās been omitted from the MGM releases?
No it doesnāt, but itās easily fixed with the soundtrack CD audio. Can literally overdub over the MGM logo on the bluray (on the VHS, the acapella is there, and so are the lion roars.).

A while back, it came to my attention that Electric Dreams was finally released on blu ray, but only in Europe. If thatās not disappointing enough,the blu-ray version had a completely different sound mix then the old 80s releases, plus it had that stupid blue tint that Hollywood is obsessed with adding to everything.
I planned to do a blu ray of this movie quite some time ago, but right when I was ready, I lost the freaking blu ray. Iām not kidding. It was accidentally thrown out when I was renovating the computer room in my house.
Having said that, I do own the VHS, and I will restore it for the fullscreen version, but my VCR only has mono output. Luckily, a vhs rip has been on youtube for quite some time now, so itās gonna have to do for now as far as audio.
Now, I hate to ask this, but is there any chance anyone on here has the blu-ray? if so, can you rip the MKV for me and send it my way? If not, I can order another copy, but it will take a while to ship from England to Michigan. Iām just asking if anyone has it to see if we can speed up the process.
If nobody owns it, donāt bother buying a copy. Iāll just get one myself. š
