Project DEVO [WIP]
Time

After doing some research, I found that most fans say the best source for the majority of the videos is the 2003 DVD, which is said to be better then the 2014 dvd (the one I have). With a bit of digging, I found some rips from it, and It is in fact better than both the laserdisc and the 2014 DVD.

Therefore, to ensure that this project is the best it can possibly be, new restorations are underway. I know I’ve been going back and forth on this, but really want the outcome to be the end all version of these videos. Please bare with me, and stay tuned for more info.

Had to backtrack a bit due to problems with the audio. I wasn’t happy with some of the restorations, so I’m working on new versions. This means the screenshots in the first post don’t necessarily represent the final versions.

I also have a small problem regarding the commentary. Since my Laserdisc player does not have a remote, I can’t record the commentary for “R U Experienced”. All the other commentary tracks are easily obtainable through the DVD, so for the time being we may have to end up with “R U Experienced” not having the commentary, unless someone else has the disc and could possibly record it for me?

An American Werewolf In London (mangowolf Edition) (V3 cancelled due to official release)
Time

Well, this project is officially cancelled. Why? well take a look.

https://www.arrowfilms.com/product-detail/an-american-werewolf-in-london-ltd-ed-blu-ray/FCD1943?fbclid=IwAR2iQpzQHzST0IKBqNOpg8FnEeOalLyXkbRnQ085z3Y9GbCrEvq95l6h7ZU

It will feature the original Mono track, plus its been restored from the original negative, supervised by Landis himself. I was even asked to send over some of the restorations of Trailers and TV spots I’ve done. This was the goal of the project from day one, to get the blu-ray the film deserved to happen. Looks like my gripes got through. 😃

A HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported this project over the years. We finally did it! 😄

Dr. Demento - 20th Anniversary Collection (Blu-ray Edition) (* unfinished project? *)
Time

Been working on a new project. It’s a blu-ray of the out of print VHS/Laserdisc “Dr Demento 20th Anniversary Collection”.

I was alway really into Weird Al since I was little, and as such, found myself obsessing over novelty music in general, which I heard through Dr Demento compilation albums. I recently bought this laserdisc for my personal collection, but since it seems that there’s no hope of even getting a DVD release, I though it might be fun to make a custom blu-ray.

The blu-ray will contain the full laserdisc restored in standard def with original mono track, as well as all the videos included restored in high def, minus the host segments. A lot of these videos are pretty rare, and my favorite of the bunch, “Fish Heads” by Barnes & Barnes has never been released on DVD.

Below you’ll find my custom artwork made from scans of the laserdisc, some screenshots from the “Fish Heads” restoration, and the track listing for the collection. This whole project is pretty simple, and it’s coming soon.

Tracklisting:

  1. “Fish Heads” by Barnes & Barnes
  2. “Cocktails For Two” by Spike Jones
  3. “Homecoming Queens Got A Gun” by Julie Brown
  4. “Jack You’re Dead” by Louis Jordan
  5. “Girls Ain’t Nothin’ But Trouble” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince
  6. “Minnie The Moocher” by Cab Calloway
  7. “Sarah Jackman” by Allan Sherman
  8. “I Lost On Jeopardy” by “Weird Al” Yankovic
  9. “Your Feets Too Big” by Fats Waller
  10. “Elvis Is Everywhere” by Mojo Nixon
  11. “Purple People Eater” by She Wooley
  12. “Wet Dream” by Kip Addotta

An American Werewolf In London (mangowolf Edition) (V3 cancelled due to official release)
Time

Alright, the reason I haven’t released any of these projects yet is because I haven’t really had enough room on my computer to store everything. However, I now have a terabyte of space on Mega which will be used for backing up everything. I’m also planning on purchasing another external backup drive.

The initial version of V3 looked terrible on my TV, so I have to re-work it a bit until I can get it right. This time I’m mainly using the Laserdisc and VHS as color reference. They seem to match the Trailers available online.

I will also resume work on my other projects. TCM, Tron, The Howling, Electric Dreams and Toy Story. I’m also going to start doing transfers of fullscreen version of movies ripped from VHS and Laserdisc. All of my projects will include both Widescreen and Fullscreen version when finished.

As for the 35MM print of Shrek, it will be sent to the scanner next month, (assuming they’re able).

I want to thank everyone on here for their unending patience. I’ve been feeling kinda guilty about not getting these projects to you sooner, but I really want them to be as good as possible. I have a lot of stuff in my personal life that sometimes gets in the way, but I will get these restorations done as soon as I can.

Toy Story (1995) 1.5K restoration in 3D (a WIP; v1.0.3 currently available)
Time

Heh, I never really finished my version, but I was mostly just gonna do a color restoration. You won’t mind if I do that too will you? I’ve got other projects to finish first, but I never exactly gave up on Toy Story. Of course, I don’t think any of us would have even thought about restoring Toy Story if it weren’t for swazzy’s
post several years ago.

BTW, I ripped my laserdisc of the film recently and its a great source for color reference. Let me know if you want me to send it to you.

They were always intended to be sepia tone. The set for the shot where Dorothy opens the door was painted in sepia tones. It’s what makes the transition to technicolor more startling. The 50th anniversary release touted the restoration of the sepia tone.
Why prior reissue prints and the annual tv broadcasts lost the sepia I have no idea.

Ah, I see. Wonder why they got rid of it for that time…

Good news 😃. Did you ever figure out the issue with the 24fps frame rate?

Sadly, no. The raw file for the new version is being encoded at 60fps, but will be set back to 24fps when the blu-ray is made, so it hopefully won’t make too much of a difference.

Thanks again for providing the UK BD source btw. This wouldn’t be possible without it! 😃

Shrek - 35MM Restoration (TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE)
Time

As I’m sure you all know, swazzy recently gave the link to a 35MM print of the original Shrek from 2001 on ebay. I decided to get it myself, since I had already been working on a project to “filmize” the blu-ray. With an original 35MM print, there would be no need to fake the look of film.

Project Goals:

Restore Shrek from an original 35MM print with original Stereo audio
Release On blu-ray with bonus features including restored trailer, making of documentaries, etc.

Project Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7gYGHHzBLg

Thanks everyone! 😃
