“That bad, huh?”
Is LucasFilm less powerful?

I very much doubt that he was being completely serious when he said that. Tweeting a funny prodcution photo is definitely not an indication that Lucasfilm has any less authority on what is and isn’t released.
It’s gotten to the point where I don’t particularly care anymore. Years of being burned by this hope have brought me to the conclusion that no matter what, whether there’s an official release or not, I will always have an acceptable analogue in projects like Despecialized. Of course, for many it’s more a matter of principle and preserving history, but given Disney’s track record with classic releases, I’m not going to hold my breath for very much longer. I’ll still be glued to my computer during the Celebration livestream, and I’ll still be hunting down the credibility of any rumors that speak of an OOT, but it’s with no small amount of pain that I say I don’t think it’s very likely at this time.
He probably ordered the 2004 masters to be butchered intentionally out of spite.
There are people on this board that literally unironically believe that George Lucas hates his own fans so much that he would go out of his way to make his (at the time) new, definitive version of his life’s work intentionally horrible.
Perhaps obligation isn’t the right word. To me, the fact that over the past three years or so more and more people have been talking about Despecialized and other such fan interpretations means Lucasfilm would have more incentive to say something, not because it’s owed to anybody but because this may well become a huge financial loss on their part should they not capitalize on it. Of course, the argument could be made that the average blu-ray buyer (hell, even the average Star Wars fan) isn’t clamoring for an OOT release, but if it was announced and marketed right – which I’m sure Disney wouldn’t screw up – they could definitely pique the layman’s interest in seeing “the original masterpiece” or something kitschy like that.
Do you think this could have anything to do with Harmy’s Despecialized mini-documentary getting taken down last month? After years of existence Fox/Disney/Lucasfilm finally feels the need to suppress it, apparently out of the blue? Maybe I’m looking too deeply but perhaps that’s because they’d be competing with an official release?
I figured that the overlap in user base on the two forums would make it acceptable to post here, but it’s clear that that’s a dumb thought. It has since been deleted and I apologize for the lapse in judgement.
[never mind]
he already has made what I consider the greatest restoration ever
Okay, I’m as excited for the day Legacy is released but take it easy. None of us have seen it. I think even he would say it’s a little unjustified to make that call before actually watching his restoration.
The end of August has come and gone, so one can only wonder whether it’s good or bad news that we haven’t heard anything.
It’s been about three months. Any updates?
Exactly how later this year are we talking? I don’t mean to sound impatient, I’m just curious.
Hey guys, saw MOMA’s 35mm preservation print of FOTR, and I must say, though the BD grading isn’t perfect, the DVD colors are far worse.
Rivendell especially looks nothing like it does on the big screen; it’s got a subtle cyan(!) shift to it rather the DVD’s ugly purple tones. Really, the film looked beautiful on 35mm in a way that none of the releases have done justice.
It really does look like to me that the BD was an earnest, if flawed, attempt to recreate the 35mm look in a digital realm. In short, trying to recreate the DVD colors doesn’t seem like the right path for theatrical accuracy.
Also, there was some footage for The Two Towers at the end of it, and, looking at it, the Extended BD (which keeps the established color palette from the DVD) looks flawed as well.
Where can one see the MOMA preservation? Assuming you’re talking about the Museum of Modern Art one, I have the feeling that’s not up anywhere online.
I’m making some bluray box sets of this. Let me know if you want one.
If you’re making them for anybody, I’d love one. I could pay for shipping or anything like that if necessary.
Yeah, there’s definitely a difference there. Makes you wonder why they threw that into the DVD then.
Before I go and download kk650’s newest version, I have a question: does it have the really orangey, warm filter over the whole Council of Elrond sequence like in the DVDs? How comparable is the color timing between the two?
How do extra frames happen? Why would there be that disparity if they come from the same source originally?
Is there any chance somebody could seed the Attack of the Clones Regraded edition on myspleen? It’s only at 3 seeders right now.
If you could still use some people I’d be down. Really, you won’t be running out of volunteers any time soon.
A few more questions to satisfy my hype:
What is the soundtrack going to be? 35mm Stereo and mono I’d assume, but maybe the 70mm 5.1 too? Will they be directly from the reels or will it come from the '93 releases again?
Will this release have a message before it like the SSE did? I’m all for giving credit where it’s due so I’m just curious.
Could it be because it hasn’t been cropped yet?
I’m dumb so if somebody could enlighten me that’d be appreciated:
What does it mean by “A conversion/preservation of the 35mm version of Star Wars East vs Technicolor hybrid?” Is this a version made from both Eastman and Tech prints?
<peeks in to see if drunk people are still giving out myspleen invites, not actually knowing anything about myspleen, but dying to get a glimpse of the cool, new preservation>
