Several screenshots further back in this thread are of pre-SE shots in all three movies
For some reason i cannot access any of these “leaks”, pictures or the videos, but i did what the eckharts ladder video where he was talking about the leaks he had seen and showed some of the screen captures. Although the colouring was slightly different, i resized the screencap to the 2020 bluray and , apart from cropping, they overlay perfectly. If they were indeed a new scan of the theatrical then this would be impossible. Even a new scan of the SE negative would throw up differences. So , if he did see leaked footage, are they using the original pre graded scan of the SE that was done for the Blu-rays and then just scanning in the missing footage to make a “theatrical cut”?

Conversely I haven’t seen the EckhartsLadder video and can’t immediately find it among the dozens he’s posted in the last few months, so I can’t speak to whether his screenshots are the same as the reddit post.
I can’t speak for the people that logged far more hours here than I have, but if this is what it looks like, then I feel like it’s kind of fulfilling the stated mission of this site to a degree. Not to say the myriad fan edits and restorations would be unnecessary or outmoded, but finally having a high-quality, official release of the original cultural touchstone is the ultimate victory for people that have been here for 20+ years, isn’t it?
I agree that it’s weird nobody seems to be noting it right now (I am myself a mostly a lurker who’s been away from here for half a decade, and I was shocked to see nobody had posted about this before me) but I have to believe that the real Yub Nub would start once there’s an official announcement.

I thought it looked a little Tunisia-ish but I didn’t want to hope in vain! At the risk of getting burned, this is starting to seem like it would have to be a very elaborate hoax at this point.
(And as an aside, that shot of the lone asteroid hurtling away is giving me big Eraserhead vibes)

Does this change anyone’s minds on whether those leaks from the summer were legit? I’m not versed enough in the fine details of any shots to say whether they’re doctored from other restorations, curious what greater minds than my own have to say.
I think even looking at Star Wars in a vacuum, if what Ben said was true, anyone would be hesitant to tell a kid that his father was betrayed and murdered by a friend turned evil. Sure, you can look with hindsight and think that’s also an almost-imperceptible sign that he’s not telling the whole truth, but I think his acting in that scene is operating on the belief that he’s being honest to Luke, telling him how his father really died.
The argument could (and should) be made that this is an early example of the process, more an essay in the craft than an example of its peak potential. Jar Jar cost millions of dollars to bring to life too, and while it’s certainly not very good by today’s standards, it paved the way for CGI to advance and reach a point where it’s all but indistinguishable from real life. More practically, just look at how much improved between the CGI recreations in Rogue One and Blade Runner 2049, just a year later.
I went and saw this last Tuesday and was hoping there was a thread about it already here – the print definitely leans toward the screenshots of the new trailer, so whether they were the original colors or not, that definitely wasn’t just done to give it a more contemporary sci-fi look in the trailer. I don’t know enough to say if it’s correct, but I seem to recall Kubrick having a fondness for pastel colors in the production of the movie, which feels more in line with the top pictures in 44rh1n’s comparison.
Out of curiosity, how long does this process typically take from inception to release, and will it be upped to the usual trackers when it’s ready? I haven’t really followed any regrades of the works on here (besides DeEd 2.7) but this looks terrific.
Not to sound reactionary but as a relative newcomer to this particular project is it normal for Poita to be offline for over three weeks at a time? I do know that he’s a really busy guy and it’s been something of a rough patch as far as health goes, so maybe I’m overthinking it.
Nothing’s been going on here for the better part of two years. But every time this thread gets a bump I still hope against hope that there’s news.
As everybody has already pointed out, this is the SE. I’d just like to say on record, however, that this exact box set was my first introduction to the trilogy as a child, and as a result I still have a soft spot for it. I managed to snag one still in the plastic wrap at a Goodwill a few years ago for $1.

Unless you’re talking about Legacy, I’ve never heard that Lucasfilm has a readymade 4K theatrical edition of any of the three. The persistent claim that the original negative for Star Wars was destroyed in making the SE might be false, and they might have a release print of it, but I don’t think there’s a remastered transfer just sitting around.
Seeing that news about the Disney-Fox deal is supposed to be revealed today when TLJ also releases, I’m thinking (and fervently hoping) this bodes well for 4K OUT prospects. It’s to much of a coincidence for it to not mean something significant for SW.

Just how the OOT has been ignored by contemporary releases, I think it’s certainly important to preserve the 97 SE’s as well. A few of us were introduced to the series through that, myself included, and it’s important to remember that it’s not their very existence which is problematic, it’s that they were designed to supplant the originals. My ideal world is where they can coexist, so yeah, I for one would be very interested.

I’ve tried to understand this point for months now, but I really just have to ask: why would the rights reverting to Disney in 2020 make any difference whatsoever? They’ve released the trilogy on home video two or three times since the LFL buyout, albeit in the pre-existing 2011 edition, and they finally put the saga out on digital formats as well in that period. Why wouldn’t they wait until 2020 for those, too, if it was just a matter of making the most money off of them? And even when 2020 rolls around, they’ll never have the rights to the original 1977 Star Wars, so it’s not an issue of them not being allowed to restore the OOT either.

If memory serves, RU-08 was working on a Despecialized-esque theatrical recreation frankensteined from various sources a year or two ago, but I’ve never heard anything about it being completed.

It’s not that Disney doesn’t want to share any profits at all with Fox. It’s that they don’t want to share the sudden spike in profits that would come with a 4k/OOT release.
That doesn’t make any sense though. If that were the case, that wouldn’t stop them from working on such a release at the present time, which they aren’t. It can take years for a restoration on this scale to be finished, and if they aren’t going to sell it until 2020 anyway, there’s no reason for them not to get a head start on it now if that was there intent.
