Maybe prominent isn’t the right word, but everytime he appears, he’s being hugely built up, completely relying on the fact that everyone in the audience knows him.

It’s Darth fucking Vader. I mean I don’t need to say anything else.

He was blown up to appear more important than he really was.

Our fault; not one that lies with the film. This is akin to the Phasma situation.

The first scene in the castle was absolutely insignificant to the plot and Vader hacking through rebels seemed to be below him. In Star Wars, he could have single-handedly boarded the Tantive IV, killed all the soldiers and so on, but he sends stormtroopers to do that, because it wouldn’t be worth his time.

For one, time was of the essence. Secondly, who cares?

People keep on bringing up the idea that the characters in Rogue One are worse than those of TFA, but I think that these movies present two very different ways to create a character. In the case of TFA, the characters for the most part are larger than life, all of them at least idealized, at most mythologized. Everything they do is part of a larger destiny, and they cannot die in vain. Even Han Solo’s death was played on a huge, dramatically lit stage surrounded by other figures of destiny who will surely avenge him.

Contrast this with the characters of Rogue One, who are often subdued, restrained, ordinary. They are not figures of destiny, and even the one who has genuinely magical powers is treated as no more important in the story than the grunts in the Rebellion. It is the story of everyday people coming together to achieve a goal that will be largely unsung in the annals of history and overshadowed by the achievements of Chosen Ones.

To say that one interpretation of character is better than another is to misunderstand how TFA and Rogue One are fundamentally different movies. One is about heroes of destiny, the other about people acting heroically.

I think even with the story and tone they had there still could have been more character development for the characters that were underdeveloped and character development period for characters who aren’t developed at all. TFA had more things to balance and still was able to pull off having most of our new characters be layered. Even if someone like Jyn just had more personality it would go along way.

  • “Star Wars fans only want one thing: Vader”
  • “I will not condone a course of pointless fan films that will lead us to more nostalgia madness !”

This just goes to show how diverse the Star Wars fandom is and how impossible it is to satisfy everybody.

I forget who said it, but if ANH was released today, it would be crucified by today’s culture.

They’d be calling Luke a Mary Sue, they’d say the plot holes and plot contrivances ruined and there would certainly be someone who would say that Leia being somewhat competent and having a stand up attitude was feminist propaganda. This is of course under the assumption that the PT came out first and was revered like the OT is in real life.

got another three (admittedly terrible) movies for his origin story

To which the Darth Vader I know and love (like the one in Rogue One) was not in the film at all. ROTS has murderous Anakin and then had Anakin in the suit asking about fucking Padme. That’s not Vader to me. Kid Anakin and angsty teen Anakin don’t fit the bill either.

looms over TFA by motivating its antagonist

Doesn’t even count.

and already had a 25 issue comic and a novel in the new canon

Which most people are not going to see. The more casual fans should be able to see a Vader centric story.

These non Star Wars fans are the worst…

EDIT:

And you’re goddamn right I went there.

Do you really want to go somewhere else? We could also discuss how some people have incredibly poor taste in films, don’t understand anything about storytelling or filmmaking, and base their ratings of Star Wars movies on nothing more than how much **** can be crammed onto the screen that they’re familiar with from other films or novels for God knows what reason.

You don’t even understand the opening crawl of a film you claim to love. Fuck out of my face with that shit.

You’re asking for a ban man. What I do understand are people who are so vain, so into themselves, that they enjoy watching movies where their entire gratification comes from subconsciously going “ah I knew that was going to happen” and “I remember that in some other film I liked years ago” and “that was in _____ EU book I read!” and the like.

Or not.

EDIT:

To elaborate I like knowing exactly how the Rebels got the Death Star plans, I like the moral ambiguity of Cassian having to kill Galen, I felt kind of emotionally attached to Jyn and the storyline with her father, Vader was fucking badass, I like seeing new planet, new droids, new aliens.

Can someone explain to me what’s wrong with Vader’s dialogue? (Not counting that James Earl Jones sounds older, or the voice modulation.) I can’t remember his dialogue word for word (I might have forgotten some odd lines), but as I was watching the film I thought it was fine. I especially thought his “don’t choke on your aspirations” line was spot on.

I’ve read elsewhere that some people feel that Vader isn’t supposed to say snarky things like that, which I don’t get at all. The OT had several moments of Vader being snarky and intimidating at the same time.

Exactly, How he pronounces “Meeeercy mission” and his “Perhaps you think you’re being treated unfairly” line are good examples of this.
