An Experiment in Inducting a SW newbie.
Time

I have two girl cousins, the older one is 17 and younger 14. In summer I thought I show the older one Star Wars as my relatives know I’m a HC fan and I get enough ridiculing comments about it even though none of them probably haven’t seen them. I got Harmy’s version and my uncle has a movie room with a projector so even if I was by myself, it would’ve been a great experience for me to see it on a screen. Well, unfortunately my cousin thought it was boring and left during some Tatooine scene, which was disappointing because after they get off Tatooine it really starts. But my younger cousin came instead in the middle of the film and she enjoyed the rest of the movie.

As The Force Awakens gets closer, yesterday I thought I’d show her The Empire Strikes Back (Harmy’s), again thinking that I’d watch it even by myself if I had to, haven’t seen that on a screen since 1997 SE either. I said to her let’s go to watch the best movie in the world and she said sure. During Hoth battle we were interrupted as I had to move my car out of the way, and she was asked if the movie was exciting, she said yeah. Then we continued, she was pretty quiet the whole time but watched it with enthusiasm. When Lando opened the door and there was Vader, she had some kind of reaction that she didn’t see that coming. Then when Leia yelled Luke it’s a trap but Luke continued, she said to him “fool…”, LOL. I saw that she was pretty excited in the end, not sure what she thought about Vader’s reveal, did it come as a surprise etc. I’ll have to ask her before ROTJ maybe. When the credits rolled I asked wasn’t it great and she said yeah! No bigger reactions but I didn’t expect any standing ovations either.

What if TFA is awful?
Time

Just wondering out loud… Can any of you guys think about a situation where there comes a new SW movie that is actually better than any of the OT? Yeah, most likely won’t happen is what we’re thinking, but does that mean that we will not give them as movies even a chance? Having just seen TESB yesterday on a projector for the first time, it still is a perfect movie for me. It almost hurts my head to try even think about how you could top it, I actually have no idea how it would be possible. Everyone can have great ideas but all the stars would need to be aligned to make it perfect. If something similar ever happens, I think anthology films will have better chances if they’re done right.

Episode II has the best story of the prequels. Discuss.
Time

I agree that AOTC has a very good story buried in there somewhere, when you disregard all the lines and most of the movie itself. I rememberer enjoying the beginning very much when I first saw it. It has some really cool moments (again, disregarding the execution). The assassination attempt and R2 in a dark room surveying it meanwhile the Jedi were discussing in the next room, then some chasing in the Coruscant underground and bars, Obi-Wan going alone on his mission like a detective, meets the assassin, meanwhile the kids have same alone time of their own… Okay the rest of the movie goes more pointless to me, even story-wise. I hate the arena battle and Geonosis etc. Anyways, too bad the execution was just poor. Lines were cheesy, the chase was trying to be funny, it’s too cartooney, the underground wasn’t interesting or menacing, and the love story… ugh. Obi-Wan’s mission was pretty good though, even though the whole cloning/cloners thing was bad as well.

So… most likely, Harmy is right. It just depends how much you disregard what you see. Is the whole cloning mess part of the story too? And Dooku’s weird plan? I haven’t seen AOTC in 7 or 8 years so I don’t remember exactly how the story progressed actually. Anyways, nice analyzing. Too bad the end product is probably the poorest (or is it…).

Knights of the Old Republic 1 vs 2. Which do you like more?

I would go for KOTOR1 easily. The story and characters feel more "Star Wars" like.

I prefer the setting and planets in KOTOR1 as well. They are much more visually beautiful and this a huge factor for me.

KOTOR2 has too many ridiculous concepts to my taste (ridiculously powerful villain, immortal villain, etc.).

I would however have much more trouble to pick a favourite between KOTOR1 and original SWTOR story-related content.

I concur completely. The villain in KOTOR is to me the best since Vader, while in KOTOR II they villains are ridicilous. Also the sequel was so rushed that the ending came out of nowhere when I played it while the first one just became more and more epic and interesting until then end.

They're releasing new Bond steelbooks, these have the best cover art since the VHS releases. Still waiting for original poster art.

Damn! These beat the old covers by a mile. I don't want to have to buy them all over again though.

Nice of them to give Maurice Binder's title sequences (mostly) some love.

Indeed. Forgot to mention that they're Best Buy exclusive. :( So most likely they won't be released in Europe, either. Shame!

Edit: never mind, I see they're sale in Germany at least. But they aren't releasing all the films it seems, only the ones related to Spectre.

Why didn't anyone tell me about The Humanoid or The War in Space? They look amazing.

I have a soft spot for Star Wars rip-offs. Wish they were doing something like this near me. Anything they're missing?

I've seen The Humanoid on TV, it's pretty weird but I found it enjoyable because of the pure SW rip-off theme. The Bond girls were very enjoyable as well, haha. I'd go to see it too, but I've already seen it twice. If SW rip-offs are your thing, it's recommended.

That Japanese one looks weird, too! I even have the poster for it. Maybe, maybe...

Almost Star Wars - local film tribute including The Ewok Adventure
Time

Between November and January, our national film archive is showing films in the hype of TFA, titled Almost Star Wars. Unfortunately they don't show the OT most likely because of the rights and cost, but they do show The Ewok Adventure. I guess it would be fun to see even though it's one of the most boring films I've seen but as I have a ten free tickets, why not.

They are also showing Battlestar Galactica (maybe for me), The Black Hole, Battle Beyond the Stars (yes for me), Starcrash (yes), The Humanoid, Spaceballs and the Japanese Wakusei daisenso/The War in Space (maybe). Sounds like a fun way to spend some winter nights!

On a sidenote, I'm most excited about seeing Back to the Future trilogy marathon on October 21st 2015 by the archive, tickets sold out in 1-2 minutes. It will be great to see them on film for the first time.

Picked up the The Black Series 6 inch series Yoda. Trouble is with these smaller figures in the range as per R2-D2, the price is the same for these as it is for regular size figures. Anyway, looks pretty good. What do ya think ?

I totally forgot where I saw a custom of this and Vader just recently as I normally don't follow modern toy/custom threads. The custom ones used heads from another series, was it Hot Toys or whatever. Anyways, this Yoda was too tall and green and ugly and the custom looked perfect. They also swtiched Vader's helmet and I think R2 was completely from another series, too. The Yoda is pretty bad actually.

Edit: of course I found it immediately after this: http://toyotter.com/2015/06/use-your-brain-brainiac/

I'm not trying to attack you here

Really?

Did you see The Terminator [T1]?

No, I haven't seen The Terminator, what is that?

Try harder.

You could look at it that way, but it's more like Star Trek - every time they go back, a new future is created. Terminator 3 taught us that everything they tried to prevent still happened, just in a different way.

Well, Star Trek sucked too, so yeah it's more like it. Also neither of them was really needed. If ST was needed, okay, I don't like it anyways (TNG was pretty good though).

He was in over his head there too. remember the police station, or the crimes he committed? He wasn't really a model soldier.

Didn't say he wasn't/he was. But he wasn't a whiny bitch Jai Courtney -type character acted by Jai Cortney who just became a passenger in this film. Now, I don't think Michael Biehn was an awesome actor and some of his lines were bad, but seriously, I couldn't picture Biehn's Kyle in this movie doing what he does here.

oh and with John - the most we've seen of him was the Xian Bale version where he doesn't really do a lot. he sits around the base, he growls at people, he gets  zero respect from command and then he almost gets himself killed by defying orders.

Salvation was a bad movie, yes. But at least John Connor was still John Connor, not a plot device to do something kinda old kinda new twist. It wasn't my strongest point, but it just felt lazy writing.

I think the point here was Sarah realising that she could actually make her own choices and not be a slave to the timeline. she'd been told that she had to have sex with a man she'd never met, I can see how she'd be uncomfortable with that. this is a bit different to meeting and falling in love with a guy.

Yes, but they had zero romantical chemistry on screen. It was almost Anakin-Padmé bad.

Here's an idea for an experiment - watch terminator 2 and every time Arnold delivers a cheesy one liner, take a shot of whiskey..

Are you comparing T2 and T5? Really? Arnold has one liners in all of his films. In T5 he was just a comedic relief more than an action star. If you think he's the same in T2 then okay.

Salvation was a complete waste, absolutely nothing important happened in that film. Even worse - there was no time travel, no attempt to alter events by messing with the past. To me that is what the Terminator is all about.

Well, the same can be said with this film that it's a waste. The only point I'm giving for Salvation is that at least they tried something different. We have now 4 movies of traveling through time, you don't think that's enough? I think 2 was good, then it just has gone repititive. Why do we need to see more of the same? Or why do we need Terminator movies at all anymore? They did the "perfect" movies already, they can't top them, why don't just give it a rest.
And I'm not defending Salvation at all, I don't like it. The plot was bad, Jai Courtney, no wait, Sam Worthington was bad etc. I just give it props to try something new. I also like some of the Terminator models that were bad-ass looking (not all).

I feel like you are being overly critical on a movie you just plain didn't like.

Umm, just critical actually. I could be more if I wanted. Like how Sarah Connor recognizes her own unborn son? Or the whole Kyle's memory thing. Or how Arnold flies off the time machine and becomes T-1000? If you know the anwsers, great. I don't care. Just saying that I could rip this apart more if I wanted.

I just saw Terminator: Genisys

LexX, just how were you able to see it so early?

You do know that sometimes movies get released in foreign countries before their US release? Remember, the USA is not the center of the universe.

Terminator 5 was released in the following countries on June 25th: Columbia, Denmark, Greece, Peru, Singapore, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Turkey.

That is correct and actually I didn't even know it wasn't released in the US when I started the thread.

Also, I concur with all Mavimao's points. I don't know what some other people have been drinking when this has reportedly gotten some positive reviews and how Arnold and even James Cameron (okay, both were in the making of this film so they're kind of obligied to) give this thumbs up how this is the "real" third movie. I saw a Cameron interview where he says how this film respects his films and characters and how this looks similar but this time with a nice twist... I mean, did he even see the film? This film makes everything else non-existant! I don't know how this could have given less respect to the four others than completely ignore T3 an T4 and then just mess up the whole timeline before them.
