Terminator films
Time

I just saw Terminator: Genisys and I had to start a thread about the whole franchise.

SPOILERS

The movie sucked! I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, it was way worse than 3 or 4. So basically none of the other movies happened at all, not even the first two which to me are the best action movies ever with Die Hard. They ruined John Connor. The new Terminator model sucked and didn’t even make sense. Kyle Reese became a whiny bitch who’s in a way all the time and Sarah Connor was just annoying (although hot). The pair just argued and yelled at each other through the whole movie and it concludes to a kiss. What? Ugh. It was good to see Arnold back but his performance was on par with T3, throwing some one liners and to lighten the mood. Salvation feels like a masterpiece after this as this one just pisses on all other Terminator films and their characters. Oh, and what’s up with Salvation and Genisys when they have to have Skynet in some weird digital form to explain what’s going on in the end? First time it was cringe-worthy, the second time even more so.

Man, with all the sequels this year this was the biggest disappointment. I don’t think I want to see this film ever again. And there’s a trilogy coming from this…

Has everyone noticed how Lance Henriksen’s character is never mentioned by name in The Terminator? That wasn’t always the case. I viewed a LIVE Entertainment VHS release and Traxler uses his name in a scene. Henriksen’s “like you’ve been dead for a week” line was on the same tape and is also missing.

Do you watch the entire end credits of a movie/tv show?
Time

I don't usually actually watch them, but I always leave them playing as it is kind of a nice way to come back to reality from the movie by listening to the music. At the same time I can do the dishes or check emails or just relax. At the theatres I normally leave when they start because of the company I'm with as I don't know anyone who thinks it's normal to stay and watch the credits.

Star Wars premieres in China four decades late

Poor China, deprived for so long and you know what version was likely shown. =(

Just more incentive for me to travel there and set fire to Mao's corpse.

“But the character design is weak, the leading actress is not beautiful, the leading actor is not handsome and action scenes are like children fighting.”

Wow, they shouldn't have shown the movie at all! Spread the fire.

Even respected actors have to pay the bills. Sir Alec probably has a dog or two in his filmography.

Naturally, but I don't know any "classics" from him during the 80s or 90s. But like I said, I haven't seen much of his work nor I'm that familiar with his filmography, but it almost seems that he made some classic horror etc. old school flicks from the 50s to the 70s but after Golden Gun the next good part was in LOTR. Of course I could be totally wrong but it's just a feeling and it's a bit a sad to feel that way.

I didn't really know him either growing up. I have actually seen very few films from him which is sad since I really like him as an actor. He's in the top 3 of Bond villains for sure and he's the perfect Saruman. I think he was a good choice for the PT but the films didn't do him justice and his character fell flat. Other than that, I've only seen a couple of his older films and then duds like Police Academy 7 and Gremlins 2. For some reason he has made a lot of crappy films for his caliber, to me it feels like if Alec Guinness was in Troll 2. Too bad they don't show pretty much any Hammer films here, I'd like to see his other work too.

RIP.

The Star Wars Screenthemes pack (SEE HERE) made some available in higher resolution, but even then, there are many holes that still exist. For example, THIS picture of Luke and Darth dueling is in the ROJ storybook, and is a famous image, but try as I might, I can’t find a digital version of it in good resolution. Does anyone know where they could be found (if at all)? Or have them themselves? Good resolution images not in the Screenthemes pack are out there, and I am curious as to where they may have come from.

Many questions to answer but I'll focus on this.

Firstly, all ScreenThemes pics are cropped, original images are wider/taller that have been cropped to 1600x1200. Also McQuarrie art from the Themes have been squished.

Secondly, LFL does have all promotional photos digitalized. They have had catalogs and probably still do which I also have where are thumbnails of most promo images (but still there are slight variations of the same set as could have taken a couple of photos and you can see a slight movement between them, and also harder to find images that have not been touched up e.g. blaster bolt missing, lightsaber blades missing etc.). They could offer the catalogs to press/other media that wanted to use hires pics, and they would have to order them from LFL if they had the luxury to choose. There is the elusive Kodak Photo disc which has all these images in hires but haven't ever found it. Anyways, the only chance to get the original hires images is from press material, that's where they usually originate. "Unofficial" hires pics are scans of photos made outside LFL.

So, let me make sure I understand this all. Regarding Screenthemes, no matter what, it was cropped, and in the case of McQuarrie, it was also squished? I knew that McQuarrie was squished, but that's good to know that everything else has also been cropped.

Next, LFL has, yes, digitized all of the photos, but they are only available via a catalog? Is this catalog digital or in print? And, have you seen the catalog? I'm not quite sure if you were implying that or not. So then, if a big media company, say Time Magazine for example, wants one, they can order it directly from LFL? But us commoners are out of luck?

Finally, this Kodak disk.... Is there any info or any links to learn more about it? Sounds intriguing. Or do you have any other info about it?

Thanks for the info! And sorry for all the questions

Yes, that is correct. No original photo was in 4:3 ratio originally, I don't remember the correct ratio by heart but it should be closer to 3:2. Also all the ScreenThemes pics are horizontal, so originally vertical photos have been cropped a lot (there aren't that many of those but still).

Not sure how the catalog actually work but my guess would be pretty similar to yours. I have the catalogs which are just PDFs that are made from screencaps from the real catalog. There are 8 catalogs, photos from the films themselves, poster art from all the films, McQ catalog and misc. catalog. Even then they don't have all the photos or art that are really out there but still there are many I haven't seen elsewhere.

Unfortunately I don't know anything else about the Kodak disc even though I've known about it for ten years. IIRC, someone here hinted about having it but that's about it. I doubt anyone would share it anyways as it's quite of hush hush.

I think the PT -- any part of the PT -- is best left ignored and forgotten.

Agreed. I stopped watching the PT in 2007 or 2008 and haven't watched one since. Honestly, I don't miss them at all and the OT is much more enjoyable. I still remember parts of the PT if I start to think about them but luckily I've also forgotten a lot.

Implied starting date of the Empire from OT dialogue
Time

Sevb32 said:

It's very vague, it could be any number of years, 20 prior or more. There was NO absolute time set by the dialogue. Anyone who says there is, is simply dreaming up what their own timeline based on vagueness.

That's why this thread starts with the word "implied".

Sevb32 said:

Where do you dream up 50 years? Guinness would have been like 11 years old. He turned 62 while filming ANH. Some people try to place him at much older. But that was his age.

50 years sounds a little too much for me too, but we aren't talking about Guinness' age but Obi-Wan's (if even that). Mark Hamill wasn't a teenager either nor Dave Prowse was a cyborg.

Implied starting date of the Empire from OT dialogue
Time

To me it has felt like 30 years... But there are a few "compromises", if that's a good word, to be made.

Firstly, the last Jedi were still in business when the Empire began and they were hunted down during its rise. I mean, you can't take control of the galaxy in a few weeks so this could have easily took like 10 years. Also it's an interesting thought that the Jedi tried to serve the Empire to keep the peace and justice but after the Empire got power, they were hunted down.

Secondly, the Empire started before there was Vader. IIRC, Luke & Leia were 18 in SW? So Anakin had to be human about 20 years before SW, and to me, the Empire can't be as young as them. Now I want to think that Luke & Leia were conceived by a good guy because the option is a little disturbing, which would mean that Vader has been Vader maybe 15-18 years? So I think Vader's timeline isn't that far off from the PT, I just wouldn't have let Anakin know that he was going to have kids at all. Oh, and if I remembered Luke & Leia's ages wrong, add a couple of years.

Anyways, it seems the Empire has been around about Han's age but then the old Rebel beards were there during the Republic.
