Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Just saw it.

Ummmmmm… it was alright. It has some very good moments and honestly there’s nothing that sucks either.

It was good to see familiar faces although it took some time to see the first one. The beginning was a little stretch for me, there wasn’t much of calm moment, you was suppose to care about the characters from the beginning. I mean… the new characters could’ve had a little more depth to them. I still don’t know who Rey is, she could be evil for I all know! And a stormtrooper who has had an empty life… But still they go on an adventure, and there was a great pilot in there somewhere too.

Harrison Ford kicked ass as Han Solo, no “I’m too old for this” Indy 4 crap, he pretty much continued where he left off. Carrie was fine, they had some chitter chatter together, it was alright. They really had us waiting for Luke, not much to say about that. There was good humour in the movie, I enjoyed it. The First Order left me a little cold, the officers were pretty awful/uninteresting, they seemed more like from fan spoof or something. The villain was… at times great. Not sure about how I feel about him being Han & Leia’s son… And of course Han’s death… a girl next to me cried when it happened. It was pretty expected but then again… I think he was the best part of the movie and one the best parts in the trilogy, so not sure if I wanted to see him go. It was sad.

Just from seeing the movie, the score was pretty bland. I don’t remember any new theme to hum, and the first 30 minutes could’ve used more silent moments as the music was blasting a little too much without any specific themes. Props to JJ for not using distracting lens flares or shakey cams.

This needs to be rewatched for sure. The OT didn’t, I knew right away that those were the best ever. Now, my hopes were extremely high as I’ve waited for this for 20 years, some people more. Has this been the best movie I saw in 20 years? I really wished to say yes yesterday but I don’t think I can’t. It was alright, pretty good. Not bad at all. Some of the things just seemed to just happen in SW universe, they didn’t feel SW. Then again, some very much did. Maybe it just because of my expectations, I don’t know.

Anyways, here was just some of my thoughts. There was applause in the beginning, couple of times in the middle and at the end so the crowd enjoyed, hopefully you too!

An Experiment in Inducting a SW newbie.
Time

I watched ROTJ with my cousin on last Saturday.

To me it was pretty strange to hear her comments since I don’t even remember how it felt to see it for the first time. When Bib Fortuna came up, she was like “ew!”, I guess we’re too used to Twi’leks already. Then when Boushh rescued Han, she asked “who’s that?” and then when it was Leia, she asked “why did she gave Chewbacca away?” and honestly I didn’t have an answer for that, I was like I dunno… Then when they went to hyperspace with the shuttle, she was like “pretty cool, you just go to lightspeed” and I thought like what else is new, but those were fun comments. I was waiting for some laughs for like Ackbar, or Nien Nunb or the Ewoks but no, she was really sucked into it. But for me, the Ewoks… they really are getting more and more painful to see especially with others cause I was sure that she would be rolling her eyes or something but no.

I don’t remember anymore reactions, but when the credits rolled I asked what was her favorite film and she said the last one. Then I asked if she had any idea that Vader was Luke’s father and she said no. That’s great. 😃 Then we watched the trailers for TFA. I haven’t told her anything about the PT which I think she doesn’t even know of, just that TFA continues after ROTJ. When we left the movie room, she was humming SW theme, LOL. I’ve done my part!

How will you be watching the saga in preparation for Force Awakens?

Me and my father and little brother have decided to watch all 6 in prep. When I visit on Friday, we’ll be on ROTS. During Ep. I, my dad spoke up during some Binks antics and just said, “George Lucas must’ve lost his goddamn mind…” During the podrace, he was like, “Did Lucas think he was making Ben-Hur? Like, was this supposed to be his big chariot race scene? This… this is just awful.” And then he passed out. We woke him up after the race.
He was actually interested to rewatch Clones, on account of he couldn’t remember anything from it. When me and my brother reminded him that it’s “the romance one” he quickly replied, “Oh yeah! …oh…” He fell asleep rather early on during it.

Your dad sounds smart.

STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread

Honestly for me my only big gripes are having individual half-hour episodes, instead of arcs. The stories tend to feel rushed to me most of the time.

That was one of things that bothered me a little, too. The first two episodes (Spark…) had a lot of stuff crammed into two 22 minute episodes, in five minutes they left a planet, went to hyperspace, came back, saved the kid, destroyed a Star Destroyer, again to hyperspace… There’s way too much jumping to lightspeed, hopefully they would stay a little more still. I remember Droids and I think they went once to hyperspace and it felt a little more “special” than just popping up everywhere.

They just started showing Rebels here on TV, today was the third episode. I have to concur with most of you that this to me is the most Star Wars-y movie/TV show type of thing since Droids, maybe even more. For a kids’ show, I think they more or less nailed the atmosphere. But I also agree about the animation, it’s pretty rough but if you have seen other kids’ shows these days, it’s pretty okay. But I love the backgrounds and the music and the themes mostly. The characters… yeah, I think it would do better without any Jedi stuff. And Sabine would be better without that weird pink armor, what’s up with that anyways? But let’s see how this progresses, I have a lot of catching up to do.

Where’s here?

Finland.

Info Wanted: a Color Corrected 2004 SE Trilogy preservation?
Time

If you want the Special Edition color corrected, I’d point you to the 1997 SEs. The best are made by darkjedi (if they all have been released?). If you want the DVD editions color corrected, that would be just another fan made special edition. I mean, it’s an option but why bother with any official edition from the 2000s? The real SEs are still even somewhat tolerable.

Help: looking for... Episodes 2 and 3 - Widescreen VHS Capture.

In my country they released AOTC and ROTS on VHS only in widescreen.

Interesting! I’m in the UK where widescreen VHS releases had always been relatively common (especially in the case of Star Wars) but when the UK AOTC VHS was P&S only (yet the deleted scenes are W/S!), I assumed Lucasfilm had given the middle finger to analogue home video. (They even had an online disclaimer at one stage about the TPM LD…)

If you still have the Finnish AOTC VHS, can you please share some scans of the box sleeve? 😃

I do (unfortunately), I don’t have a scanner anymore but here’s how it looks. http://i66.tinypic.com/ruzptc.jpg
ROTS broke the consistency. First they released TPM in P&S and WS and AOTC in WS. TPM P&S has the vertical photo on the front cover, TPM WS and AOTC have the widescreen photo + the text widescreen. ROTS has the vertical photo and no mention about widescreen, even though it is.

Are the subs in the letterbox area?

I haven’t watched it in 10 years but I think the first line is on the picture, second on letterbox area.

Finland, and actually I’ve been meaning to put it up for sale on eBay.

Oh a Finnish guy! Terve! 😄
I’ve only encountered ROTS VHS twice in my life. Never bought it even though I had a chance. It’s probably as rare as the Finnish Widescreen VHS of TPM. You can sell the ROTS VHS to me if you want. PM if interested.

Tere! ROTS is more rare than TPM in WS, after retail I’ve seen ROTS for sale maybe four times. TPM WS I see almost every year in flea markets. Also, PM sent.

The Force Awakens 3D vs. 2D
Time

I will go to see it in 3D even though I would’ve liked 2D more, but they show 2D only in smaller screens and they were pretty much sold out on the premiere day unless you wanted to sit alone or in the front row. But I won’t be watching it in 3D on home video anyways, so it doesn’t bother me that much to see it on the biggest screen in the nation in 3D as I lucked out with the seats when someone didn’t take their reservation. The first screening is on Dec. 16th like 10 a.m. but I will go to see it after work, 6 p.m.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

Thanks for the response Harmy. The Executor set is very nice, I’ve had it for years and it’s still not beaten.

I also like Movie Fights, it’s a great show for movie nerds like us, LOL. Also good jabs on PT etc. Too much new movies and comic book movies for my taste (best heist movie ever: Fast Five?!) but still I’d agree it’s the most entertaining YouTube show.

Looking forward for Jedi 2.0.

No that’s where you are just plain wrong. She is a Senator who is captured in an act of espionage and is a leader in military resistance to the Empire. She can resist Vader’s powers and standard Imperial interrogation techniques and is really handy with a gun. So not just some posh Princess. She isn’t even that posh when she is talking to Han and Luke.

Interrogation was basically purely on mental level and it doesn’t mean too much in this context. She could simply be good at resisting truth serum. It is not like she was being beaten up. Same goes for her skill with a gun. It doesn’t mean a thing as she could as well gain that skill on luxury “safari” hunts.

The thing is that she is plain annoying after she is being rescued. With that kind of annoying attitude and lack of charisma, it is really implausible that she would be able to lead anyone. But anyway, she didn’t need to as she was a spy in elite circles.

By those comments, Luke is more spoiled than Leia. He whine’s about the Falcon too, + a lot of other stuff if you’ve noticed, makes not so nice comments to Han etc. And he didn’t have crap in the desert. And who did he become? Rebel leader and the last Jedi.

We first meet her as a spoiled royalty in ANH.

Leia never seemed to be a spoilt royalty, what do you mean? She shoots stormtroopers, doesn’t break even under torture (who knows for how long), leads her rescuers into a garbage chute and is more on the point of what’s happening than her rescuers, while always thinking the best for the rebellion.
