Will the anthology films be a repeat of the prequels?

Why make a movie about the Titanic? Everybody know the boat sinks already. šŸ˜‰

But if the Titanic would have reached New York it would be a really dull movie.

I get your point, but we need some stakes for the movie. Rogue One could have them, if the characters are unknown, they could all die. But Han Solo and Boba Fett… I really hope they have some interesting stories to tell because I really am worried about how good they turn out.

Apparently George is criticizing the film for being a ā€œretro movieā€

Well, you can’t really say he doesn’t have a point there.

Edit: and I only mean it being a somewhat ā€œretroā€, not all the crap he’s saying about SW being a soap opera etc.

The editing in TFA was terrible. I had a conversation with a top Hollywood editor and he seemed offended I would think so and said I was wrong.

But I stand by my point. It’s downright terrible in TFA.

Alderaan said:

The first sequence was a disaster and should have been cut. The rest of Act I with Rey on Jakku was done pretty well I thought. This was the only part of the film that was allowed to breathe. The bit on the freighter was intolerable. After that, the film just felt rushed and jerky, no rhythm whatsoever. As Ric pointed out, I think the editing of the space battle in the final act was really poorly done. There was no dramatic tension at all.

I remember in the trailer there is a wide shot of BB-8 in the X-wing set against the snowy landscape on Starkiller, and all these TIE fighters start closing in. Such a dramatic and foreboding shot, but it wasn’t even edited right in the final film … I remember seeing it at the theater and thinking ā€œthat’s all they did with that great shot?ā€ Then it was just pew-pew yippee we did it! Game over.

Another potentially great moment in the film was the reveal of Darth Vader’s melted helment. As it turns out, the thing was on screen for a total of 0.5 seconds right at the end of a scene and that’s it. The camera was on Kylo talking to himself for 30 seconds or whatever, and then only so briefly do we see Vader’s helmet. There is no buildup towards this scene, no real context that Kylo wants to ā€œfinish what he startedā€, so this huge reveal really calls for the film to

Stop.

Call attention to the helmet. And Kylo.

Really let it sit in for a moment.

And then carry on.

…Instead, we see it on screen for half a second and then mid-transition – welp – we’re onto the next action sequence just like that, no big deal.

Just out of curiosity, are you a filmmaker?

I only ask because you’re throwing out some pretty big opinions, and I’m curious about your credentials.

I’m not a filmmaker and I agree on all Alderaan’s points above. I don’t have a strong memory about the editing itself for the whole movie, but I agree the pacing was uneven and so was the sense of time. There wasn’t a time to breath or let things sink in until they got out of Jakku and the end battle was pretty messy and it felt like it didn’t even matter. The trailers were great, especially the Japanese one.

After I’ve finished with that I’ll set about making a new 5.1 version. As before, this will be mostly the 1993 mix with the addition of an LFE channel, this time taken from the Bluray instead of the DVD.

Hey h_h, what about the 1997 DTS theatrical mixes, are they any good for this kind of project? Or is the BD better, which sounds to me a little hard to believe considering LFL’s home video releases? Great to see you back and thanks for the update!

I’d like to comment on Anchorhead’s points because it’s a fun little brain teaser to figure these kind of ā€œplot holesā€.

Anchorhead said:

 • An escape pod the size of an SUV falls to a planet, sometime later the Empire decides to go look for it, and within minutes the stormtroopers are standing next to it? Weak.

The size is small, if there would be an escape pod sized thing falling to Earth I think there are measures to track it’s landing site. I’m sure Empire has the measures. Also it could have tracking in the blockade runner, or it could send some kind of distress signal.

Anchorhead said:

 • The pod lands very near Luke’s house and he just happens to buy the droid that was inside? Later it ends up at Ben’s, who also just happens to have the lightsaber the totally random farm boy’s dad used to own? Contrived.

Not sure how near it lands, the droids could’ve travelled a few weeks in the desert. That may still be close, but R2 could’ve piloted it close to Ben if he had some info about his whereabouts. At least they didn’t land on Ben’s backyard. And Luke isn’t random to Ben because Ben more or less is close to Luke because of the connection.

Anchorhead said:

 • The Death Star - constructed specifically to blow-up planets - has to go around a planet before it can…blow up a different planet? WTF?

Most likely the weapon takes time to power up. It is only 30 minutes to go around and the Empire wasn’t in a hurry because they thought the rebels would be no match. What’s a half an hour when you’re sitting on a Death Star? That’s the irony.

Anchorhead said:

 • The Death Star is the size of a moon, yet our heroes seem to be able to walk everywhere they need to be in what appears to be just a few minutes. Unrealistic.

Turbolifts. Also it isn’t stated it takes minutes, they probably spent a couple of hours there, but it would be a boring movie if they showed 2 hours of them walking in corridors and standing in lifts. They probably used R2 to know their way and get around. There must’ve been some info posts there or something, I don’t think every Imperial knows where to go in a station full of gray corridors.

Anchorhead said:

 • A small exhaust port on a moon-sized space station can lead the entire station disintegrating? Contrived.

Maybe. But if there is a reactor or something that has exhaust then there would have to be some sort of port to get it out. The shaft was also shielded so it did have protection. I don’t know what kind of reactor there was so hard to say if the blow up was ā€œrealisticā€.

Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)
Time

Just finished watching it for the first time. I’ve only tried it once before and I got to the cartoon but didn’t continue from there. Anyways, this was a great release. Nice extras, cool menu, picture was great (the color could’ve used a little boost but still). The special itself… not so much, but at least this time I could finish it, and I watched it in 5 segments.

Great job guys, nice to see the mission accomplished, this is as good as it can get.

Does anyone here own the 2015 BD Saga set? Does it still have Fox logos in TESB and ROTJ? Or is it 100% similar to the 2011 set, with no Disney connection anywhere?

The actual films are the same as far as I know, but I believe the Roman numeral episode numbers were removed from the physical discs themselves. Ultimately pretty meaningless, but people made an enormous deal about it in comment sections round the world.

Haha, that’s interesting. I’m just wondering if I should sell the 2011 and buy the new one because I hate that old packaging on my shelf. Not that I would watch the films themselves anyways.

Just put it in storage or in the back of a closet. Problem solved.

That’s what I do. Along with putting them in my custom snarky Blu-ray Covers.

The packaging is ugly no matter where you put it. The new one is servicable and thinner.

Arguably worse though was the First Order general. That was by far the worst acted part in the whole movie. What an awful casting decision.

I thought Domhall Gleeson was fantastic. Underused, a bit. But his excessively fascist speech was dark and great.

I thought he was the worst thing in the movie. Hopefully he died there.

How does everyone feel about the new version of the main title? It’s got quite a different feel to it. I wish I knew how to describe music better, because I can pinpoint it but I can’t put it into words. It took me a little off guard when the film started, but I think I like it as sort of a new version for this new generation in the franchise’s history.

I noticed that too immediately. Not sure what to think about it, either.

Was anyone else disappointed by the film’s score? None of the music really grabbed me like it did in the previous films.

I was and mentioned it in my review. Today I listened the soundtrack itself and other than Rey’s theme it’s a complete mess of different noises with a few familiar themes added, even those aren’t allowed to be what they once were but with more or less to make some kind of impact of nostalgia or something. At least the PT had some themes going for them. I really wished and wanted it to be better but…
