Ultimate Star Wars Chronological Marathon

I have a chronological Star Wars list, but mine include various comics, novels and any current and future narrative driven video games, so it’s probably too bloated to share here. Been working on this list since 2017.

I am intrigued…

If you wish to ‘copy & paste’ it here feel free to use the…

spoiler type tags of ‘>>’ so text is not shown until the ‘Expand’ button is clicked on

…to give people the option to read through it or not - without it taking too much time / ‘mouse scrolling energy’ to scroll through 😉 👍

Alright then, thanks for the advice!

NOW, keep in mind that this list is still a work in progress. Some things may be on this list may be there as placeholders. There are also a couple assumptions on timeline placement, and placement in the timeline is usually dependent on how far in the the future the narrative of the media brings us. Any mistakes you note, I would appreciate you pointing out if you know for a fact that it is wrong.

A few other things to keep in mind is that I do not include EVERYTHING. Some stuff has been struck from my list at my own discretion. For example, The Clones Wars. In adding The Clone Wars to my list, I started with the popular list that excluded “skippable” episodes. Since I had never seen it before creating the list, I then viewed the show based on that list and even ended up removing a few episodes I deemed to be not good enough, unnecessary or contradictory to better stories. I am currently in the process of reviewing episodes that were not in the initial list for possible inclusion into the final list with a couple surprising reevaluations. Some stuff on the list may also be removed in the future once I actually watch/read whatever it is.

I also left off junior novels (because I am an adult) and short stories. Any novels or comics not found here are books of which I viewed the synopsis and deemed non-essential or unworthy of the distraction from the overall plot of the Star Wars saga and other important matters of the galaxy (or I have read it and found it to be pointless junk, sorry Kevin Hearne). If there’s a novel you find missing from the list that you consider list-worthy, it may be because I haven’t decided on appropriate placement yet. Lost Stars is one I am looking at, but don’t yet have a solid spot yet, as it takes place over many years and I’d like to read it for myself to decide where it belongs.

Anything you find missing but think should be included, I welcome the recommendations. Much that is excluded is based on my assumptions of low quality and/or importance (or may have been overlooked), so recommend away if you feel inclined to do so.

Big shoutout to the editors at Wookiepedia for providing me a blueprint to work within!

The final season of Game of Thrones generated a lot of backlash, but personally I had no issues with it. I remember reading that the last three seasons were going to be a general idea of how the story would unfold in the books rather than a direct adaptation.

To me, it is fanfiction. The first four seasons I’d rate an overall 8/10, but 7 and 8 would get a 6/10. So I, too, don’t hate it like many others. A bit disappointed, I guess, but I don’t feel the hatred many others felt, and this is coming from somebody who is a huge fan of the book series.

Honestly, what did everybody expect from these later seasons anyways? Most of the best parts from the show were lifted directly from the books. Did people really expect that once Dave and Dan ran out of source material that they’d come up with stuff as good as what George wrote? Get real.

Still, the last few seasons were MOSTLY pretty solid, but I’m still eagerly awaiting on George to deliver the REAL story.

The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

DLing, can’t wait to see the work done so far.

And I’d also like to say right now that I really appreciate you, Hal, for your edits and everyone else who’s contributed to this project for the hard work they’ve done to attempt to fix this film. Star Wars deserves a better ending than that final product and I have all confidence that this edit will improve to a satisfying degree.

Terrible DVD/Blu-ray Cover Art
Time

Here’s one for one of my favorite films:

Not sure why this exists. The cover is a reference to the character Ash’s job as a supermarket employee, so it looks like it was packaged into a brown paper bag. This DVD is essentially a re-release of the limited Director’s Cut edition of the film and THAT DVD looks like this:

As far as I can tell, the DVD image of the Official Bootleg edition is identical to the original Director’s Cut. Same features, same DVD menu and the film starts up right away skipping the menu, although the DVD label is designed to resemble a DVD-R. You can observe that the “hardwritten” back cover is replicating the back of the original Director’s Cut release, and you can even see at the top of of the OB edition where the top parts of the DC DVD are showing. As well, the chapter titles DVD insert resembles a handwritten shopping list torn from a note pad, whereas the DC insert is more traditional.

It’s clear that this was re-released because the DC DVD were a limited run (the image above shows 5,000 copies, but my copy shows that there were at least 40,000 made), but I don’t understand why change the packaging design. On one hand, it’s a neat little novelty release. On the other, as a kid (and today) I always thought the original DC DVD looked way cooler than the OB edition and it was EXTRA cool that the plastic case itself was gold coloured as opposed to the standard black, so my perception was that the copy we had was low rent, which I guess was what they were going for by making a bootleg aesthetic part of it’s design.

But, as an adult I possess both versions, so I have no reason to complain anymore.

The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut look better in 1.33:1 than they do in 1.78:1.

My only issue with The Shining in 1.33:1 is the visible helicopter shadow in the film’s opening. Then again, the overhead helicopter rotor is visible in the last shot of the opening on the blu-ray version. But I, too, enjoy those films in “full-frame” format.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time
  1. The Empire Strikes Back
  2. Return of the Jedi
  3. The Last Jedi
  4. A New Hope
  5. The Force Awakens
  6. Revenge of the Sith
  7. The Rise of Skywalker
  8. The Phantom Menace
  9. Attack of the Clones

The 3 and 4 spots are neck and neck for me, as are 7 and 8. I’m not entirely sure where the Star Wars Stories film would land. Could be between 4 and 5 or 5 and 6, can’t really say definitively.

In response to the previous post, I think Batman Returns is a masterpiece whereas '89 is forgettable and took away everything that made the Joker interesting.

As for Harry Potter, I think my opinion is actually quite unpopular in that I think the films got much worse as they went along. Columbus’s films were fantastic, Cuaron and Newell’s work was pretty good (although I do take issue with some changes Cuaron brought to the table and Yates took to the extreme), and the Yates films are a fucking embarrassment. Seriously, you can’t see shit, and the plots are sleep-inducing relative to what came before. Having not read the books, I don’t how much of that was down to Rowling and how much to Kloves and Goldenberg, but it lacked all the mystery and fantasy of earlier entries, settling for being just another YA trilogy, right down to splitting the last book in half.

Oh and the composers only accentuate this gradual downward spiral. We go from the living legend John Williams to bottom of the barrel composer Alexandre Desplat, with appropriately decent composers in between.

Yeah, you aren’t the first to tell me I’m wrong about those Batman films. To each their own, 'suppose.

And, is the general consensus that the Harry Potter films get better as they go along? I feel like the series peaked with Year 3 and was quite hit or miss after that point.

I think the first two were fairly decent kids movies, 3 was the one that was actually a very, very good film and the rest sort of meld together in my mind as either mostly forgettable or not very good at all. A huge problem I have is that the first 6 film are all primarily set in the same location of Hogwarts and that makes it very difficult to even remember which movies are which.

Feature-length hardcore porn is pointless. Nobody watches this stuff for the plot.

I watch Caligula for the plot. Although that’s half a hardcore porno, half a real film, so I don’t know if that counts.

Here’s a few I have.

-Temple of Doom is the best of the Indy franchise
-Return of the Jedi is superior to A New Hope
-Eyes Wide Shut is a brilliant film and should be classified as a masterpiece along with the rest of Kubrick’s
filmography
-Death Proof is Tarantino’s highly underrated film of his filmography and deserves much more respect than it gets
-David Lynch’s Dune and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me are unfairly dunked upon (on FWWM, I don’t know how much public
opinion has changed over the years, but it was hated upon release and I consider it to be excellent)
-Harry Potter is an overrated franchise. Not bad, but people considering them to be up there with Star Wars and LotR is
a little silly
-Ju-On (The Grudge) is a top-shelf horror franchise (at least for the first 4 Japanese and first 2 American installments)
-Tim Burton films generally stink. His best work are typically ones where his identity shows the least like Ed Wood,
Batman '89 (not Returns) and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure

I just looked through an episode guide. That’s the episode I was referencing. He was tolerable. I think the animation helps too. He doesn’t look so idiotic. Like you said, he’s also not shown as a complete idiot.

Honestly, watching that episode almost made me forget how much I despise that character. So, props to Dave Filoni, director Justin Ridge & writer Julie Siege for making me hate him a bit less.

Episode 8, The Bombad Jedi episode can be tossed in the garbage can for all I care though, lol. Really bad episode.

I have a bit of a prequel cringe every other episode or so, but nothing that has diminished how interesting and engaging this is. As I said earlier, I made the decision to make peace with that and just watch & enjoy. This is much deeper than what I vaguely remember from Phantom. The voice acting is considerably better than the Lucas films. Hats off to all who voiced the characters.

I will say at the outset: It was primarily the animation that drew me in, but I’m finding myself quite interested in the characters and storylines. I did skip episode 8 because I saw in the info paragraph that is was a Jar Jar episode. Sorry, I’m just not there yet.

That would be a few episodes later when he’s a peripheral comic relief character. To be clear, he’s still childish relief, but he was somehow less offensive than the idiotic portrayal in Phantom. I think it was the voice actor or the writing. Probably both. Plus he was used sparingly.

Jar-Jar can be every bit as annoying in this show as in EP I. However, season 1, episode 12 shows the character at his least annoying and most competent, so I’d say that one is probably worth watching.

The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

If I could weigh in with my 2 cents on Vader’s Castle in the opening scene. If the goal is to clearly establish the scene as being set on Mustafar, I don’t think including that shot is warranted. I believe that if the ‘Vader’s helmet’ scene is moved up to the start of the film, along with new volcanic establishing shots, people who are familiar with previous films would easily discern the planet on which the scene is set. I reckon that showing Vader’s Castle would come off as “hand-holding”. Not only that, it would be an establishing shot for a place that isn’t where the scene is actually set and might actually be confusing in different way.

Sorry if some of these points have already been covered here. Still, I feel using Vader’s castle isn’t the best choice here… and yes, I’m a sucker for canon, so I felt extra incentivized to share my thoughts on this.

There’s my two pennies, spend 'em how you will.

So padme is supposed to already be 8-9 months pregnant when we first see her in ROTS?

Yes and I believe this has always been the case.

But does this make any sense? If she was that pregnant, would her reveal be necessary? Wouldn’t Anakin know when he picks her up during that spinning hug he gives her? Could they even do that safely with her in that condition? Can anybody explain this? If George’s intention was that, yes, ROTS is set over the course of about a week, then I don’t see the need to blame The Clone Wars for this as I initially was. If not, well, I’d like somebody to explain all this weirdness to me or at least let me know who’s to blame.

Game of Thrones Redeemed (Released)
Time

I’m interested in seeing this, but I’ll have to wait and purchase the season 8 DVD before I feel OK about requesting a link. 😃

I didn’t hate the final 2 seasons like others did, though I admit they were the worst of the series. However, George’s novels will always be the bible to me, whereas Game of Thrones felt fanfictiony to me in the 2nd half, so I don’t mind watching a version of the final seasons that don’t match Dan and Dave’s vision of the ending.

I’m very much looking forward to checking out your edit in the near future.
