I’m a n00b and will never be able to pull of something like movie editing. I absolutely love to watch them though, even if I never understand how some of the faneditors are able to pull off some of their incredible work.
So this video (I just watched the first one) is so interesting and entertaining. Thanks so much for this! I will surely watch the rest of the show.
Haha! You never know! Film editing is just like everything else, practice, practice, practice!
Very cool to hear about the thought process behind your editing, very educational for the amateur editor like myself. Looking forward to future scene breakdowns!
Glad you enjoyed it! The whole idea of the show is to make film editing accessible to anybody who’s interested in learning it, and if you ever have any questions about how to use the editing techniques you see in the episodes in your own work, feel free to shoot me a message.
Watched the first two episodes. They are excellent. Very professional.
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it! The next episode (which will hopefully drop next week) is gonna cover the Utapau Duel. Here’s a sneak peak of how it might end: http://youtube.com/post/UgkxU3KJT7SZw0XqkPEB-KIVz1RoNZRfdNIV?si=RXnbrLi32x3JDZmP
i think it look a little abrupt, maybe have the way that the original was without kenobi shooting 2 times
BTW thanks a bunch for that input. I went back through that sequence and found a way to slow down Grievous’ death by a half second, and it’s SO SO MUCH BETTER! Great call! The Grievous Episode is gonna drop next week, so you’ll have to lemme know if that timing change worked.
When can we expect episode 3?
End of next week at the latest. I was hoping for this week, but it’s a double episode so it’s taking a bit longer than the first two. (In order to make the Utapau Duel work, we’re gonna have to rewrite all of Episode 3, haha!) My aim is to release an episode every 1-3 weeks depending on the length.
i know its entirely up to you but why are you not making full edits ? its just that u dont want or for copyright reasons ?
Yeah, I take copyright pretty seriously. I don’t want the full edits out there for anybody to watch if they don’t own copies of the originals. Policing who does and who doesn’t could quickly become a full time job that I have no interest in, lol!
But with that being said, if you or anyone else has a question about how I recut an individual scene or sequence, PM me, and I’ll send you a render of the section in question.
Also, if you see a clip you like on my YouTube Channel and want a clean render without my color grade to insert into you’re own edits, I’m happy to do that as well.
Cheers!

Really excellent! Easy subscribe. The thought processes are fascinating. Are you intending to release full movies, or if not, I’m sure this community would love access to your raw scene outputs!
No and Yes, haha! I’m not planning on releasing the full edits, but once I finish the YouTube series all of my major changes should be documented (I altered roughly 80% of all the scenes in George’s 6 films). If you see something you like, feel free to send me a PM, and I’ll shoot you a render of a particular scene when I have time.
Also if you or anybody else has a question on how I fixed a certain scene or sequence that I haven’t yet covered in the YouTube series for your own re-edits, feel free to send me a PM, and I’ll see if I can help.
Amazing videos! I honestly love this breakdown on your approach to editing, the vocabulary used showing WHY cuts can be made.
We will watch your career with great interest.
Cheers! That’s actually why I decided to do the series. I couldn’t find any good practical tutorials that explain the thinking process film editors use make cuts and shape sequences. I had some phenomenal teachers in Film School and professionally, so I thought I’d pass on a bit of what they taught me/I learned the hard way. Once you know how to think about what you’re thinking about, the rest is just fighting a losing battle against Adobe Premiere. . .
Here we are!
Awesome! I’ll add that to my notes! Thanks!
That wasn’t my original idea! It seems like I failed to make a proper note about it. I can’t for the life of me find or remember the guy’s name, but it was a user here whose screen name started with ‘Aa.’ Maybe someone reading this does remember and can point him out.
But thank you! This’ll be a treat to follow.
No way! Well, if you happen to remember the guy’s name shoot me a message, I’d love to give them credit!
Glad you’re enjoying it!
Wow, very niche and interesting. Love it so far.
Cheers, Hal! I loved your versions of the Prequels! And I’ll do my best to give you credit when I follow one of your cuts. The elevator trick you pulled in RotS blew my mind!

Yeah, it’s supposed to be a abrupt to mirror it’s sister scene in IV where Han kills Greedo. It’s a little less abrupt in the context of how the whole scene has been recut, but I’ll go back over that section before I finish the next episode and see if adding a few more frames will smooth it out a little. Cheers for the feedback!

This is some excellent work! As long as your edits include English subtitles for my ESL students, I’d love to try them in my classes.
Cheers! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Unfortunately, I’m not doing subtitles, right now, but who knows maybe someday!
I have the one you’re looking for. My recut of RotJ fixes all of those issues (plus a bunch more). While I’m not planning on making my full recut available, I’ve started breaking down all the changes I made to my recut of George’s SAGA on my YouTube Channel, and I’ll eventually do an episode on how to fix Han in RotJ.
Here’s the link for future reference. It’ll be a while before I make video concerning your specific question, but the latter half of the second episode shows how I fix the scene where Han kills the Probe Droid in Empire, and that’ll give you a good idea of the some of tricks I’ll be using to fix Han in Jedi: https://www.youtube.com/@JoyofEditing
Hope that helps!
UPDATE: Episode 4.2 is now live! - https://youtu.be/SF0DdwLG-CI
Hey y’all, if anyone is interested in learning the artform of film editing through recutting all six of George’s STAR WARS films, I’ve started a series on YouTube to do just that! The first six episodes are up.

Enjoy the Edits!
