but, if you were to show that flick to someone who has no idea what SW is... who has never seen the ANH... they'd be completly lost and going "Whaa?" every 2 minutes. Imagine the Wampa cave with no prior knowledge.... how the hell is he making that thing fly into his hand... then who is this ghost? You can go on and on...

There was this girl I was dated once who felt all science fiction was was silly fluff with no substance. One one of our dates we watched The Empire Strikes Back together. She had never seen a Star Wars film before and had never even heard of Star Wars other than from me. No knowledge of the Jedi, nothing. In fact, she was surprised when Luke lifts up his goggles and shows his face for the first time because *gasp* he was a human and not a robot. I don't know what the hell she was expecting the movie to be like, but she loved it. There was no "Whaaaaa?" every two minutes. She even let the force grabbing of the lightsaber pass by without a word. Later in the film Yoda explains the force to a very adequate degree. When the movie was over she could not believe how much she had enjoyed it and at our next date we watched Return of the Jedi, then later Star Wars. The reason I showed them to her out of order was that I knew that if she didn't like it she would only see one SW film in her life, and I wanted that to be Empire. No this girl is married to me and happily sit beside me and watching sci-fi with me all the time. It is still not her favorite, but Empire gave her a respect for it she never had and showed her it could have a lot more substance than she ever thought.

So your "Whaaaaaaaaaa?" every two minute argument is shot to hell. I agree Empire benefits greatly from watching Star Wars before hand, but I think it is a movie that can stand on its own, and that it does have a beginning middle and end in its own way. It does not resolve, that is true, but even if Jedi was never made the end of Empire Strike Back indicates hope, not despair. I don't think my wife was unique in being able to watch Empire Strikes Back before any of the others, the beauty of that film (not just as sci-fi, but as a film in general) way out weighs the confusions it might offer by being a sequel with no resolve.

Thanks for your very scientific research... your "girlfriend" totally debunked me. Shot all to hell I tell ya's!

Nevertheless, the movie has no beginning, middle or end....

jeezus. WTF? "Parading around his stuff?" It's an art book.

So are you saying that you disliked all of those names, Randy? Or are you claiming we should dislike them?

No, I'm claiming that the names aren't that different at all and it's your dislike of the PT that gives the names a bad connotation.

How about "Porkins" as a name for the fat guy? Ugnaught? And how about Hobbie? Bib Fortuna? "Many Bothans died?" Sy Snoodles and Droopy McCool? Should I go on or would you rather resume wearing these?

Actually...you've got us there....point made. But the rose tinted glasses comment was a little uncalled for...

Yeah, probably.

Sorry 'bout that.

Harrison Ford turns down chance to reprise Han Solo Role!

The only thing that makes my mind scramble is what Lucas' intention was to use an older han solo for? Is he actually planning a sequel story of sorts for his tv show? Very strange that he would see if harrison was willing to do Han again, especially when there are no known plans to do anything with the star wars story post-ROTJ from Lucas' head.

Oh it was picked up by intrawebsites?!?! Then it must be teh legits!

JediRandy, about your sig.....

McCallum says 'This is the way it was meant to be.' and he has a problem with us obsessing right?

1980 ESB - Luke does NOT scream as he jumps in Cloud City

1997 ESB SE - Luke DOES scream as he jumps in Cloud City

2004 ESB DVD - Luke does NOT scream as he jumps in Cloud City

Which way was it always meant to be? The version in 1980 & 2004, or the version in 1997?

The trick is not to obsess over a scream as if that scream contains major plot points crucial to the trilogy. Maybe then you'll be able to enjoy arguably the best SW flick without turning into a whiney fanboy for what amounts to 2 seconds out of a 6+ hour trilogy.

Then we had to wait for the DVD for the explanation, and now we need to wait for the archival superspecialawesome $150 edition to see scenes that aren't probably in there.

And BTW, putting Temura Morrison's voice for all the stormtroopers will make a massive plot hole.

Any other points you'd like to make about the fake list?

Its a wish list and rumored possible changes for the Archival Editions

Episode IV: A New Hope

1. The Imperial March has been added to Darth Vader's first appearance on Princess Leia's ship.
2. When Obi-Wan is talking to Luke about his father Anakin's Theme plays in the background and then it turns into the Imperial March as he talks about Vader.
3. The lightsaber effects have been redone and the frame jumps of lightsabers being turned on has been removed.
4. There's a new scene which has been shot during the filming of Episode III in which the Emperor dissolves the Senate.
5. In the Cantina, the Duros (green aliens guys) have been replaced with Neimoidians and some aliens from the prequels have been added.
6. The bleeding arm on the floor in the Cantina has been replaced with a non-bleeding arm because it's now canon that lightsabers cauterize wounds.
7. The original shooting scene between Han and Greedo has been restored.
8. Jabba the Hutt has been given a makeover and Han no longer steps on his tale.
9. In place of R2 wobbling down the stairs to the Falcon's hangar, a CG R2 navigating the stairs like he does in Attack of the Clones was added.
10. The white boxes around space ships have been removed and new CG shots have been added.
11. The scene of the Falcon being chased by the two Star Destroyers was modified. The Falcon now does spinning moves, avoiding the Star Destroyers' fire.
12. When the Death Star destroys Alderaan there's a new scene of Yoda's reaction to the disturbance in the Force that is created by all those deaths and then it cuts to Obi-Wan reacting to it as well.
13. The Dianoga has gotten a CG makeover and were are now able to see more of the creature.
14. The Death Star's paneling and computers have been slightly altered to show similar displays to those in the prequels.
15. The words "Tractor Beam" with Aurebesh lettering.
16. More stormtroopers have been added to the Death Star.
17. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for use with all the stormtroopers.
18. The Obi-Wan/Vader duel has been spruced up. It is much more epic and there is much more movement. A modified version of Duel of the Fates is being considered for the scene.
19. The Death Star plans that are taken from R2 have been updated. When the Rebels are reviewing the Death Star plans they look similar to the plans we see in Attack of the Clones.
20. The Death Star battle is much more epic with more Tie Fighters and more Rebels being blown to bits. We get to see old Naboo starfighters being used by the Rebels.
21. There's a new scene (shot during Episode III) where Darth Vader goes to Coruscant and lands his ship in the same building Count Dooku does at the end of Attack of the Clones. Except now the building is all fixed up and it is now Palpatine's palace. He meets with Palpatine to ask for forgiveness for his failure and inform him of a new potential who is strong in the Force.
22. Chewbacca now gets a medal.

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

1. The taun-tauns are now CG.
2. The battle of Hoth is much more epic. We see the Imperial ships land on Hoth and release AT-ATs. The AT-ATs have been sped up a bit. There's a ground battle between the Rebel soldiers and stormtroopers featuring new ships and vehicles.
3. Temuera Morrison's voice is being recorded for the older Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.
4. The white boxes around space ships have been removed.
5. The slug monster is CG.
6. Ian McDiarmid has refilmed scenes as the Emperor. The conversations between Vader and Palpatine is now longer and features a few connections to the prequels.
7. Yoda's face is now animated in CG allowing more expression of emotions yet his movements remain the same. Also two deleted scenes featuring Yoda instructing Luke have been restored.
8. A new scene was shot in which the stormtroopers, after they capture Han, Leia and Chewie, bring Vader the box containing C-3PO in pieces. Vader orders the stormtroopers to bring the broken droid to Chewbacca's cell so that he can fix him.
9. The lightsaber effects have been redone in certain parts.
10. Luke's fall from Cloud City has been reshot against bluescreen using a stuntman.

Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

1. Jabba the Hutt is now a combination of the puppet and CG.
2. The Rancor is CG and looks disgusting as ever.
3. Yoda is CG. Yoda disappears leaving his clothes behind like Obi-Wan now.
4. The ewoks are now mostly CG and there are a lot more of them.
5. The plan is to insert the love theme Across the Stars when Luke is talking with Leia about their mother.
6. Temuera Morrison's like before is now the voice for Boba Fett and all the stormtroopers.
7. In the battle of Endor there are thousands of Ewoks and they are more vicious than there midgets-in-suits counterparts. More bite the dust now.
8. White boxes around ships removed.
9. The black blotches around Palpatine's face are gone.
10. Some of the lightsaber effects have been redone. The shadows that the lightsabers made on the floor are gone.
11. During Anakin's death scene it starts with a sad rendition of the Imperial March and slowly evolves into Anakin's Theme.
12. Sebastion Shaw who played Anakin when he was unmasked has been replaced with Hayden Christenson in make-up to make him look older. Anakin has much more dialogue. He apologizes for the destruction he caused, he thanks his son for turning him back to the light, he tells his son to rebuild the Jedi and he says he loves him and his sister. Just before he dies he says, "It is finished...".
13. We see more planets celebrating at the end of the movie. We see an aged Jar Jar, who is now the leader of the Gungans, on Naboo celebrating with the people of Naboo and the Gungans. We see an old Watto, who is now unable to fly, sitting in a hover chair cheering on Tatooine. During these scenes Across the Stars plays transitioning to the victory celebration music at the Ewok tree village.
14. Anakin's spirit is now played by Hayden Christenson with make-up to make him look his age. He looks on proudly at his son Luke with the spirit of Padme by his side.

Again, these are more of a wish list than accurate information.

I believe it originally came from TheForce.net

This "list" has been floating around for years and is total bullshit.... but it manages to fool the fools who follow every time.

ANH screening with modelmaker Lorne Peterson...WHY ARE THEY SCREENING THE SE??

Randy its true that every single optical effect was recomposited digitally in 1997. They did this to eliminate matte lines and dupe grain. They accomplished it by digging up the original bluescreen elements and plates, scanning both and then re-comping them. Its even detailed in the recent "what has changed" feature on the official site. Every single special effect has been digitally altered.

How does this relate to replacing models with CGI? Can you remove Mat lines from around a model without replacing them?

(which is what I thought we've been talking about all along)

Then you're fine by me. I just wonder if we'll ever get one. Hasn't the September DVD set sold reasonably well? I mean it was in Amazon.com's top ten for a while. I can't see LFL saying that there's no market for it. Not quite as big a market as some other things perhaps, but I'd imagine that there's a considerably large group of people who'd pay for a restored OOT DVD set. I don't imagine that LFL is financially hurting from this set . I just wonder if it'll come out while Lucas is alive, or while I am alive.

We'll see... if there's ever a time for it, it'll be the big 6 movie box set....

How does one contradict the other?

One is talking about shots that feature the models in any way. Many of the shots that were originally models are now entirely cg. That's where the 80% figure comes from and that wasn't even something I myself said. The latter statement that you quoted was said by me, and yes, if you look at THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE's shot by shot comparisons, you'll see that I am correct.

I'd love to see that.... provide a link, please.

Maybe Lorne Peterson doesn't see digital enhancement as an insult to modelmakers.

Maybe he is mature enough to realize that it's just another tool to make movie magic with, and doesn't concern himself with this idea that some effects are insulting to other kinds of effects.

Read my above post.
