Labling them as originals would be more false but I think the best way is to just call them what it is. The Star Wars trilogy. These are the same movies.
Not the exact same movies, but since GL is only releasing one it's not like in the world of mainstream consumer video that there are multiple versions practically anyway.

You say they are the same, but they aren't. That's a bit like saying, for example, that the old version of "Pscho" and the new one are the same. Or saying that the original "Blade Runner" and the Directors cut are the same. I understand that they only released the directors cut on DVD, but they clearly labelled it as such; they didn't try to hide it And the differences between those two versions are much more subtle.
Lucas is supposedly proud of the differences he's made so why isn't he promoting them? If anything he should have large print on the box advertising the fact that these aren't the crappy OT's but the vastly superior new editions...
Well, considering the Faces release was not even the "true" original releases, but the closest we will probably have, if we get into semantics, none of the DVDs will be the OT or the SE. They will (or would in the case of the OT) just be very close.

If I see something I like in a shop and it is a movie I want, I might just pick it up off the shelf, read the blurb on the back, and buy it. Star Wars is different for me, but many people may just see it and think"Hey, Star Wars is out on DVD, I might just get it..." Or they may buy it as a gift...
Thank you, that was the exact point I was trying to make and I think you summed it up best here.

1. He stopped for at least a year in the Mines of Moria.
2. The story with Aragorn/Legolas/Gimli was finished promarily much sooner then the Frodo/Sam/Gollum journey.
3. It took years for Tolkien to finish LOTR.

Okay I'll name it.
TPM:
1. Jedi vs Droids on Trade Federation space station (quick obi-wan this way, we'll use the ventilation shaft)
2. Jedi vs Undersea monsters
3. Jedi rescues Amidala from Naboo
4. the pod race
5. Qui-gon-jin vs Darth Maul pt 1
6. Battle for Naboo
7. Jedi vs Darth Maul
8. Annie blows the trade federation ship (yippie I blew it up)
AOTC:
1. Jedi vs Zam Wessel
2. Obi-wan vs Jango Fett
3. Obi-wan chases Jango
4. Anakin and Padme vs Droid factory
5. Arena battle
6. Jedi vs Seperatists
7. Clonetroopers vs Seperatists
8. Jedi vs Count Dookie
Now lets examine the ones from OT
ANH:
1. Rebel blockade runner attack
2. Millenium falcon escape from Tatooine
3. stormtrooper chase on death star
4. Millenium Falcon vs Tie Fighters
5. Battle of Yavin
ESB:
1. Battle of Hoth
2. Millenium Falcon chased by Imperial fleet
3. Luke vs Darth Vader
4. Escape from empire
ROTJ:
1. Luke vs Rancor
2. Escape from Jabba
3. Speeder bike chase
4. Battle of Endor
5. Luke vs Vader
As you can see the OT relied more on story than on action. (note: I left out the tibits involving the cantina fight, sand people fight, wampa fight, etc... Because these aren't long enough to be action sequences)
Oh, I see. Instead of having any Wars at all to Star Wars, maybe we should make it Star Sh@@. Half the things you mention are needed to explain parts of the plot, like Luke versus Vader, or just for story pace in general. Just because a movie is an action movie doesn't mean anything with, let me think here, ACTION is worthless, pointless, etc... It serves the purpose of moving the story better and keeps the audience entertained.

Tarkin is completely different because he was so straightforward. He was an evil imperial officer, thats all we needed to know:
Dooku is:
-a former Jedi master who left the order (why we don't know)
-He became a Count (of what we are not told, how or why are also a mystery)
-He is really a sith working for sidious (since when we are not sure, and whether he knows Sidious is Palpatine remains a mystery)
-He was qui-gon's master, but for some reason had never met Obi-wan (which makes zero sense given that they all live in the jedi temple)
-He was Yoda's padawan, but this is only mentioned in the eleventh hour of AOTC and nothing really comes of it
-He's older then Sidious (well at least CL is older then IM, which sort of seems out of place with the whole master/apprentice thing)
And he's introduced in the last third of AOTC where he fails to really make a decisive impression, with his...
#########SPOILER##############
...death in the first 25min of Ep3...
############END spoiler##############
it seems unlikely we will learn anything more about him.
I have no problem with Dooku not being in the SW series for very long, but he should not have had such a complicated offscreen origin if that was the case.
I see, Tarkin being in one movie, ANH, is so much more then Dooku. And with that, we learn even less. And as far as Dooku goes period, we do not know how much more will be learned. And I think we learned a good bit about him for the first movie he appeared in, especially compared to Vader's debut in 4. And here's another thing, hint hint, Dooku being Yoda's padawan was supposed to be a surprise. But you already knew that.

Likely it will be that he is cliniclly dead before he is revived as Vader.Quote

Sorry but I am going to need a reliable source in order to believe you. Thedigitalbits is a reliable source and theres nothing on such a change at the digital bits.
You don't have to believe me, but its the truth. The Anakins ghost stuff has been more or less spelled out by DarthToeJam at TF.n in the classic trilogy forum, he has connection on the inside which have been confirmed to me. The Palpatine thing in ESB I can't go into detail about how I know this, but it is true, I'm sorry I can't do better then that, you're well within your rights to disregard everything I say.
For myself personally, I will take that into consideration, but of course I will still have doubts. I do sincerely hope the Emperor money head is replaced.

Alright, if we're all going to bi@@@, then let's go. I know the majority of people think the SE suck. Good day to you. However, they are just as much SW as the OT are. It is going over to fanaticism when you say there are changes, so it shouldn't be just called Star Wars. That's like saying different revisions of the Bible can't be called the Bible or they MUST have the version right on the front cover. And we don't know if the box itself has a flap like Beauty and the Beast, you pop it open and it says something like, "The Star Wars Trilogy with all new special effects" or something like that. So what I am saying is the OT does not have the only right to the throne here. If anyone had some common sense, it would be, "The OT should say the Original Star Wars Trilogy and the SE the Defintive Star Wars Trilogy or something like that." Even the damn Faces were marketed that way, last time to own the original Star Wars Trilogy! And I think it is rude and makes you just as guilty as jimbo of insinuating fans of the SE, presumably since they were in the poll, as something less then you are. An SE and/or prequal fan is just as much a Star Wars fan, and not any stupider, as an OT fan like yourself. Now put that Lapti Nek in your pipe and smoke it!

Come on jimbo, wake up and smell the coffee! Without him saying anything in most press releases or on the box about how they are different, that is much more misleading. If he said they were the SE more or printed it on it, people at least would think, "Well, these are not going to be quite like the OT." You said yourself that the differences between the SE of '97 and the Somewhat UE of '04 are going to be small, so that is much less misleading all things considered.
Just in general right now I am getting pissed with both sides because you don't have a comprimising or cordial bone in your body to each other with alot of this. If you figured out that most people that signed the petion and many that didn't I bet would agree with me perhaps we all wouldn't be making fun of and treating each other like a@@h@@es in the first place.

as for Passion... it wont even be recognized for any awards because of its content....
stupid i think...
anyone here seen it?
I tried to see, but it was sold out at the time. Haven't had a chance to see it since. As for sugarcoating the prequals, I think that truth does depend greatly on one's own point of view. I would say there are different from the original trilogy, but I still enjoy to watch them alot and will like to watch them in order. And considering the harsh criticism on The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones since they have been released, I don't think they have really gotton any special treatment when all has been said and done.

I suppose so. Before LOTR I would have said release in the same boxset, same time, but considering how well the LOTR did with their formula and will continue to do so, I would suggest it, though the SE would have to be the EE of the two of course.

DVDs resolution is only about 1.3x as high as laserdisc so a bootleg won't be that bad. Still there is a difference in Terminator 2 special Edition. That was done with seemless branching. This process could not be done on Star Wars without a huge loose in picture quailty to the point where it would look about as good as the bootlegs. They would have to be on separate discs. E.T is a better example. Thanks again for argueing your point intellegently though.
I wasn't arguing the technical specs with you, both my examples were of more traditional director's cuts, that is true. But you bringing up ET is a good point. Very close to release Speilberg said only the ET SE, but at the last minute included the OT. Do you think there was a significant benefit in releasing both versions? Since the picture and audio quality would go down with branching, like with the Beauty and the Beast DVD movie disc, would there be much harm in making the boxset where the cases for each of the movies held two discs(like the prequal cases) and then of course have a fourth case for the majority of the special features?

While I know what you're thinking, I actually thought it was great when I was smaller and I watched ESB, now that I compare just to how Vader looks from real to hologram in the same movie, ESB, and then compare to the Emperor, I must admit I personally am happy with the change.

Or if the UE that comes out sucks compared to the '97 SE? Wouldn't you want the SE on DVD if the UE sucked? Why not then the OT if you answered yes to the previous question?
Well first of all the Special Editions are coming out this year. The changes over the 1997 versions will be minor and can't possibly ruin the movies. I am confident in Lucas and his judement so I don't think the Ultimate Editions will suck either. If the Ultimate Editions do suck I will sign the petition but will live watching the SD-DVDs were getting in 2004.
So the basis of signing the petion is on which version is better then? What about historical preservation? If the originals don't matter, why does the Library of Congress keep them? Is it that bad to have both versions for the public on DVD like Terminator 2, Army of Darkness, ....? Should not GL keep money from all versions of Star Wars that he spent so much time making, versus losing ANY amount of money on OT bootlegs? Isn't the principle of GL having and received money from his film rights enough?
