What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?

There is absolutely no defense for liking either scream.

Objectively, yes - it’s not great. But subjectively, it’s all preference, no matter how flawed.

Then there’s no reason to say this:

Now, Luke’s scream in EMPIRE, there is absolutely no defense for liking that change…

Sure, there’s no valid defense, but if someone likes it - then let them like it. You would be right had I said “There is absolutely no reason for liking that change”.

Do not want.

I deserve this - but it’s mostly relative to the other changes in JEDI. I’d rather have Vader scream “Noooo!” throughout the entirety of the film than ever hear Jedi Rocks ever again…

It’s not annoying (to me at least), adds some more drama to the scene (albiet schlocky drama), and I was never a fan of Vader’s silent redemption. Please have mercy on me - I just want to watch movies maaaaan.

Now, Luke’s scream in EMPIRE, there is absolutely no defense for liking that change…

Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread
Time

Another pointless post about how happy Rogue One made me…

I’ll never forget how ecstatic I was upon seeing Tantive IV and hearing the motif come in after the Imperial March. It feel very genuine and not forced - brought a few tears to my young eyes. I hadn’t read any of the leaks, thus I had no idea that the film would actually end the way it did.

It grows on me the more time passes by - as did TFA. Can’t wait for it come out on Blu-ray.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)
Time

I’m going to vouch for the '93 mixes, which I believe were on the Faces LaserDisc releases. Whilst only 2.0 - these mixes are incredibly powerful, especially when ProLogic is utilized. I watched ROTJ on Laserdisc with my home theater system a few years back and it shook my entire room.

The theatrical colors of the Star Wars trilogy
Time

I reduced the effect of the LUT in the project by 50 percent. While this variant does not have the same Technicolor look, the colors are retained and it falls more in line with the home video releases - and the white are no longer clipping! I also added additional green values in the highlights.

Here’s the LUT for download: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1-W6ByLSZVKSHVmRFFYeG9Oamc

No intentions to hijack this thread, but I matched a picture of Tarkin from the Tech samples posted earlier and applied the LUT to the Blu-ray. I’m not sure how accurate these colors are, being that the Blu-ray varies, but I was amazed at how natural they looked. I’m sure a few more passes could do the trick.

Holy hell, that’s an impressive regrade for being single-pass.

Thank you! My only concern with it is the highlights. They seem clipped, but I could very well be wrong. However, here’s the regrade in motion: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1-W6ByLSZVKRDBuX3pWZDhuR1U

4K restoration on Star Wars

The DP of Rogue One Greig Fraser mentions that they had a look at the 4K versions of Star Wars AND Empire in the February issue of American Cinematographer:

“With Gareth Edwards, we wanted to be attentive that the look be consistent with A New Hope, which is seared in our brains. We weren’t necessarily trying to reproduce what it actually looked like, but how we remember it — there’s a difference between reality and the remembrance of reality. Part of our research was to look at the 4K scanned versions of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. They look fantastic, but they don’t look how I remember them.”

Maybe cause there is more detail cause of the resolution and restoration than he remembers and that’s why they don’t look how he remembers them.

This. I feel everyone else is reading way too far into it.

Tweaking AVT-8710 TBC for capturing Laserdisc / VHS
Time

Hi all!

For a while, I’ve been trying to tweak my external TBC for capturing in VirtualDub. I wasn’t very satisfied with the brightness / contrast out of the box as it looked too flat. So, I bumped contrast up two and left brightness at the stock setting. I subsequently tested these settings with my STAR WARS Faces LD.

Here’s the result: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B1-W6ByLSZVKejlrcC1paURRUFE

I think the whites are definitely clipped - at least on my end. Should I just leave the brightness / contrast settings as is or do you all think I should tweak it differently?

Opening Crawl for Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Time

Hal 9000 said:

Movie opens with a traditional crawl against a starfield.

Pan down to reveal the island at night, with the starfield being the night sky. It’s the very early morning prior to Rey’s arrival, where we are introduced briefly to Luke and see the last scene from a different perspective.

The production video they released seems to show AHCH-TO in a much darker setting. This could definitely be a possibility.

I’m really hoping they’ll go the RO route and start with the prologue of REY and LUKE on AHCH-TO and then cut to the crawl - that way it won’t simply be recapping the prior film.

I don’t see how this solves your purported problem. So you’d rather have the crawl recap only the last scene of the film?

That way they can jump ahead spatially - even if just for a day or two. I am really interested to see how the confrontation plays out, but I don’t want a crawl that recaps the last film…
