These are definitely upgrades, even if by a slight margin. Thank god they got rid of the awful DNR on CLONES.

Based on those screenshots the prequels look absolutely normal to me. Maybe TPM’s a little waxy but that’s nothing new. Hate me all you want but the OT looks like dirt.
I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t a nice change from the 2011 masters. But you’re right, they could be better.
I trust MadVR in terms of colors, compared to the process used here. Nonetheless, you can get a good bearing on the detail of each transfer. Here are some more:
CLONES still looks bad, SITH looks great, and the Original Trilogy all looks fine. Not great, but fine. I’m just glad we are finally done with the 2004 masters.
I didn’t expect these to look any different than the D+ streaming versions, and they don’t outside of improved fidelity.
Here’s a proper SDR converted screenshot of the 4K PHANTOM MENACE disc. It looks awful, just look at the haloing around Padme.

Yes, the new 4K sets contain the 19SE on Blu-ray as well.
No, any new Blu-rays pressed from 2020 and onward will have the 19SE. The reissue in 2019 was just clearing of old stock.
Many people are getting their DMC copies early. Here’s hoping someone can confirm if the new Blu-rays of the OT feature the 2012 masters.
For a small moment in time, I thought we might just get the OOT. Guess not. Oh well.
I still don’t understand what the hell the editors were trying to do with that awkward “Darth Vader’s Death” remix.
They could have just left that whole scene completely unscored until Kylo showed up and it would have worked better. Better silence than dragging out the Return of the Jedi 2CD set and chopping it up.

It’s not just nearly identical, it’s lifted from the soundtrack from AOTC. There are also snippets lifted from TLJ, TFA, ROTJ and ROTS sprinkled throughout the film.
He did the same thing by dropping in “Burning Homestead” into TFA during Rey and Kylo’s fight.
Why he couldn’t get Williams to simply rescore them is beyond me.
The moment between Ben and Han was absolutely perfect.

I’m not sure if spoilers are allowed in this thread, so I won’t say much more beyond the fact that J.J. / Terrio took a very complex and intriguing villain and cheated him out of a proper ending.
The more I think about RISE OF SKYWALKER, the more it irks me. With FORCE AWAKENS and LAST JEDI, it was the opposite. I let those two settle for a few days, saw them again, and started to really like them.
I find it hilarious that all the promotional materials cited this as “THE END OF THE SAGA,” yet in the final moments where all the planets are celebrating, we only see planets from the original trilogy… as well as Jakku.
Not Naboo, Geonosis, Kamino, etc.
This film tries to wrap up the saga, but also tries its best to ignore the prequels (and LAST JEDI). You can’t have your cake and eat it too, though J.J. thinks otherwise.

There is simply an energy that I feel when watching the film that makes me able to accept much more of what other critics are finding issue with. I came in wishing for an emotional experience, and I do think that’s what I received.

Despite the films flaws, it was an emotional experience. The music cues, the twists, etc. The film is not perfect, but damn if it doesn’t make you feel something.
The camera work was much less dynamic in comparison to FORCE AWAKENS. In fact, this may be the first film where J.J. didn’t use a whip pan!
Can J.J. please quit stealing music from other films. He’s not just reusing motifs, he’s just straight up lifting the audio file and dropping it into his film.
The ending motif from TFA is pasted lazily into the final moments of TROS. I haaaaaaaaate that.
I didn’t hate it, but my god, as a huge fan of the Sequel Trilogy, that was bad. You could feel just how rushed this film was. What the hell happened…
All modern TVs come with a “calibrated” mode, usually called “movie” or “cinema”.
That’s quite close to calibrated settings, and unless you have measurement equipment (*), it’s as good as you will get.
If your TV is 1-2 years old it should be quite good really.I have my TV set like this (movie), but with higher brightness that default for SDR. I see no problem with personal preference, as long as you keep the baseline in mind.
- Yes, the correct white point will look yellowish. It’s usually even marked as “warm2” on many sets.
But it IS the correct white reference.You can check this even with no equipment.
- Get 6500k (D65) led lamps.
- If you have a window, look at an overcast sky.
Whites on the TV should match these references 😉
I’ve never understood this approach, as both an avid film viewer and cinematographer.
White is white, not yellow tinted. These modes are often called “cinema,” but never once in a theater have I seen a film projected with a “warm” color temperature, unless it was intentionally color timed that way. If anything, many theaters project their films with a more “cold” setting, which is equally as ugly.
I always keep my sets at “normal” and then tune in saturation, tint, etc.
