Snakes on a Plane

This can't be a serious movie.

Heh, of COURSE it's not a serious movie. The director and writor and even Samuel L. Jackson all know that it's just a big joke, and they're playing it that way. The reason there's so much internet buzz about it is because it's such a ridiculously horrible idea that it's hilarious funny because you can't imagine why anyone would ever actually make it.

I'm sure you've enjoyed movies or TV shows like that in the past.

And what was supposed to be a forgeatable, bombing B-rate movie, is now going to give precedence to the studios. It is OK to produce crap, the audience buys it.

It's NOT suppose to be a forgettable b-rate movie. It's suppose to be a movie passing itself off as a b-rate movie in order to make a joke. I don't see why it's so hard to understand. It's a style of humor which has been around for a quite some time now.

Things that are ridiculously bad = funny because they're so ridiculous. Why do you think people like those Sci-Fi channel original movies?

And as for the "it's okay to produce crap" statement: it's been okay to produce crap, for like, the past 15 years. Let's assume for a moment that Snakes on a Plane is actually suppose to be taken seriously. Even if that were the case, it's not the first terrible movie ever made. You make it sound like every other movie on earth is a MASTERPIECE. I highly doubt this movie will be as bad as WHITE CHICKS, or 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS.

Good cinema is officially dead the moment Sam L Jackson says "There are muthaf**ing snakes on the plane!" and the whole audience cheers.

There's a difference between "cheers" and "laughs." You make it sound like people who are going to watch this movie, are doing so in a SERIOUS manner. I bet 90%, maybe higher, of people who see this movie, will not take any moment of it seriously. Just think of it as a comedy.

And I don't see how this will be the death of "good cinema," since the two are hardly comparable. You can't compare something which is TRYING to be bad, to something which is good. That's just an unfair comparison.

Yeah, I saw it. It was pretty weird. I didn't really think it was that funny, and the message they were trying to get across came off as pretty jumbled up. However, I did find it ironic that, at the end, Kyle basically said the exact same thing I posted earlier in this topic.

"We shouldn't be mad at Chef for leaving us. We should be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brain."

Yeah, I'm sure he was probably exaggerating. But that doesn't mean I can't debate his exaggeration. I mean, whether he was exaggerating or not, he still posted it. Besides, it's an exaggeration of is actual opinion, so we're still debating opinions. Just debating them in exaggerations.

second, well it is blatant hypocrisy on Hayes' part, even if it's true all the facts are not known. South Park is a show that satirises EVERYTHING. not only religions, but also celebrities, politicians, ways of life etc. Hayes has worked long enough for the show to know this. Many many many groups have been offended by things South Park stated, Hayes is not the first one.

Oh, I know it comes off as a hypocritical gesture on Hayes' part to quit a show like this for the reason he claimed to quit. That's not what I was trying to argue. I just think it's ridiculous to act like he's some kind of LOWER LIFE FORM because he quit, since we don't know the whole situation. We don't even know Isaac personally, so how can we begin to judge him based on two short internet news articles? One of the articles was basically just Matt and Trey talking about how stupid he is, it didn't even mention anything from Isaac's point of view. I'm not saying it doesn't come off as hypocritical. Obviously it does. But it's like I said at the end of my other post: 1) We don't know the whole situation, so we can't fully judge it. 2) Even if the facts we've been given are true and there's nothing more to the story, and Hayes really is a big hypocrit, that doesn't make him a bad person. Just means he's human.

I mean, sheesh, we're all hypocrits at some point. It's like lying. It could be considered bad... But it's still a natural part of life. His life just happens to be posted on the internet, and so he attracts derision from people on message boards.

Nah, that's not what really made me angry. Obviously, any topic that mentions Scientology is eventually going to turn into a discussion on just that: Scientology. The thing that made me angry is how some people seemed to act like Scientologists are BRAIN DEAD IDIOTS. People forget that they're humans, who just got tricked, which is normal... They're not bad people.

That's where I think some people, especially people who are just finding out about Scientology, forget to draw the line. Thanks to shows like South Park, there are now a bunch of teenagers walking around going "MAN SCIENTOLOGISTS ARE DUMB," when what they should be saying is "MAN SCIENTOLOGY IS DUMB."

It's like... A drug addict is NOT a bad person. My sister was a drug addict for a few years, and I know that she's a great person. It was the DRUGS that were bad, not her. Do you see what I'm trying to say?

Holy crap. And people accuse us southerners of racism! What a total joke this whole blasted thing is. I hope if Hayes has any chldren they dis-own himor something. This is the most blatant hypocricy I thnk I've seen from a celebrity the etnire decade.

Okay, I'm gonna try to counter this in a civil mannor. This topic is making me pretty angry. Not because of Hayes' hypocrisy. Sure, it's a shame, but I don't know all the facts, and besides, everyone makes mistakes. His just happen to be publicized on Yahoo News!

The thing that's really making me angry is how some of you are reacting to the news. For example, the post I quoted. Why on earth would you hope a person's family DIS-OWNED them just because they, as far as you know (may not even be the case), made a mistake? So what if he baught into a scam, people are fooled ALL THE TIME. That doesn't mean you need to be ANGRY at them.

I'm going to give you an example. In the example, I'm going to use a celebrity, even though I think it's completely ridiculous to worry about what a celebrity does. Anyway, here's the example: Say that JESSICA ALBA did a show that made fun of people who use drugs. It shows how people who use drugs are "stupid." But then, later in the series, the creators made an episode that made fun of alcoholism.

Jessica Alba decides to QUIT the show, because she's a BEER SPOKESWOMAN and she doesn't want people to think badly of the product she's promoting.

This is the exact situation as Hayes quitting South Park, only the South Park situation deals with RELIGION instead of substances. You can argue that religion is ABOVE substances and therefor deserves more scrutinizing, but according to you guys, Scientology shouldn't be considered a religion, it should be considered a scam. Scams and addictive substances seem to be pretty close together, in my book.

Now, would you really wish that Jessica Alba was DIS-OWNED because she, arguably, made a mistake? I mean, the way I look at it, you don't know anything about her personal life. You don't know why she promotes beer. Just like you don't know why Isaac Hayes believes in Scientology. As far as you know, Jessica Alba might not even DRINK beer, just like as stated earlier in this topic, Isaac Hayes might not even be practicing Scientology, but is merely in a situation where he can't leave.

On that operation clam bake site, they talk about how the higher-ups in Scientology keep a file on all their members, with confessions they've made. Some Celebrities are black mailed into doing things like quitting a show because it bashes on Scientology.

I mean, have you wondered WHY it took him so long to speak out against that episode? It originally aired way back in NOVEMBER. That's 5 months ago. It's kinda odd that he just ALL OF A SUDDEN noticed that they were talking about his religion.

Now, this is merely an assumption. I don't know Isaac Hayes' situation, but the point I'm trying to make is, neither do you. You don't know why he's in with that church, what he does at that church, or if he even believes in that church.

All you know is the VERY little bit of information that was posted in these two short articles. That's hardly enough to form an opinion so strong as to hope his children DIS-OWN him. Besides, let's agree for a moment that he REALLY DOES believe in this stuff. Let's say that he actually feels very strong about his religion. Would it really make him a bad person? I mean, sure the scam artist could be considered a bad person. The person who lures in people who've lost their sense of direction and don't know what to do with their lives, for his own selfish agenda. But that does NOT mean that the people who he's lured into his scam are bad people.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as evil by association. Especially not when the association is, apparently, victim.

So, what I've concluded is the fallowing:
1) We don't have near enough facts to judge this man.
2) Even if the facts we've been presented with are true, that still wouldn't make him bad. Just a confused human.

-edit-
Oh yeah, I forgot one thing. Darth Chaltab, at the end of your post, you say that this is "the most blatant hypocricy I thnk[sic] I've seen from a celebrity the etnire[sic] decade." Why should that even matter? I mean, honestly...

There are only two times I can think of hypocricy affecting your life, and that is A) When someone you personally know is a hypocrite. Or B) When a politician is hypocritical. I can't think of why a celebrity's hypocricy should even matter in the long run (or short run, for that matter). Why on earth would you honestly care about how someone who you've never met before, and probably never will, acts? Does it honestly affect you so much that you would wish for the person to have a bad life (in this case, his family dis-owning him)?

So, this story just took another turn:

"South Park" has declared war on Scientology. Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of the animated satire, are digging in against the celebrity-endorsed religion after a controversial episode mocking outspoken Scientologist
Tom Cruise was yanked abruptly from the schedule Wednesday — with Internet rumors it was covert warfare by Cruise that led to its departure.

"So, Scientology, you may have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun!" the "South Park" creators said in a statement Friday in Daily Variety. "Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies... You have obsructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail!"

Making more posts takes up more space aswell, so just posting a short reply with your avatar and your signature and everything... Just the tiniest little "yeah, I agree" takes up more space. But it's not enough space to worry about it.

It's nice of you to consider Jay and his finances, but one new topic is so insignificant compared to the amount of space Jay must have, and it's too confusing when you keep bumping old topics and renaming them. I think everyone, including Jay, would prefer for you to just do it the normal way.

But your intentions were good, so I hope you don't think I'm coming off as harsh. I'm just sayin', if Jay didn't want people creating new topics, he would close the forums down, since creating new topics and new discussions is basically the only purpose a message board serves.

-edit-
As for your topic, the link didn't work for me. It just led to a blank page. But I know what movie you're talking about.

Akira is pretty cool. The animation is amazing, but the story gets a little tedious. Miyazaki's stuff is usually better, but not always. All in all, it's a decent anime flick, but nothing really that special.

Alright, I'll give you that the music was great. But wasn't, like, 90% of it just rehashed from the game? I don't remember many original tracks in it, but I could be wrong.

Everescent - Yeah, let's just agree to disagree.

But there are a few quick points I want to bring up.

You know what would have really sucked? If for all the fight scenes, everyone lined up on their respective sides of the battlefield, ran at one another and whacked each other with their weapon or shot or whatever, then went back to their side.
People always try bringing up this argument, but I just don't see how it works. There is an obvious middle between DBZ style action (the kind in the film) and RPG style action (the kind in the game). I don't see how people fail to see the OBVIOUS middle between the two. That's what I was expecting the movie to have, the middle kind. The action just got WAY to over the top and corny, and in the end, just ruined a lot of scenes. The ONLY fight scene which I think was GOOD and ACCURATE to the game was the Tifa fight in the Church. If you watch the movie, you can tell there's a huge difference between that fight, and almost all the others.

You want realism? Go find a different genre.

First off, action films and sci-fi films CAN have realism. There's no reason to "find a different genre" just because I'm looking for some BELIEVEABILITY. But to be honest, I'm NOT a big action film fan.

Let me put it this way. There are two types of movies: Brain on movies, and brain off movies. Sure we all love the occasional brain off movie. But I was expecting a sequel to FF7 to be a VERY big brain on movie. Instead, it was a brain off.

What the hell do you want from Cloud, who is wielding a weapon of his size in the first place?

This at least has an explanation. Cloud is PUMPED FULL of Mako. Mako increases his strength. But it does it to a believable extent. It doesn't give him the power to jump HUNDREDS OF FEET and to take SWORDS AND GUNS directly to the face all the time. It makes him He-Man, not Superman.

As for your edit: If I took the time to list EVERY SINGLE THING in the movie that broke the suspension of disbelief, my post obviously would have been MUCH LONGER. I only pointed out a few things because I didn't want to take the time to LIST EVERYTHING and ANALYZE it, but I still wanted to get my point across.

And there you have it. Some people can appreciate a good thing, even if it was preceeded by and associated with an even better thing.

C'mon. GOOD CGI and GOOD MUSIC does not automatically make a movie GOOD. I mean, honestly, are you listening to what you're saying? Since when has "it looked pretty" been a valid reason to call a movie GOOD. Seeing as how you're at OT.com, I'd assume you'd all realize that GOOD SCORE and GOOD CGI do NOT make a good movie. Ugh! TPM had a great score, and at the time, beautiful CGI. But it strongly lacked in story. Most of you hated it. How is it any different than AC?

The prequels were all preceeded and associated with a greater thing, and most of you DIDN'T appreciate them. So I don't see how you have any room to talk about AC as if it was some AMAZING MASTERPIECE.

I admit that AC's CG and music were AMAZING. But did you guys actually pay attention to the rest? You admitted, Everescent, that the story isn't good. But how can you like a movie which is suppose to be STORY DRIVEN when it doesn't have a good story?! I just don't understand it. Please, explain to me WHAT IS SO AMAZING ABOUT THIS MOVIE, and don't use "looks" and "sounds" as an example. I don't want to hear about the surface of the movie, tell me what it was about the core. The SUBSTANCE. I bet you can't, because there WAS NO CORE. It was an empty shell.

Maybe a beautiful shell, but still an empty one. And I just don't understand how people can find an empty shell so amazing. I don't understand how you can like something ONLY for it's looks, and completely ignore the fact that it has no substance to it.

Like you said, I guess we just have fundamental differences in opinion. So we're really not gonna get anywhere in this debate. I guess I brought up more than just a "few quick points." Sorry!

Why? Explain it. As far as I can tell, there are only three POSSIBLE reasons anyone could like this movie.

1) They enjoy the animation so much, that they overlook the plot and script.
2) They enjoy the action so much, they overlook the plot and script.
3) They enjoy anything with the name "Final Fantasy" in it so much, they overlook the plot and script.

These are all pretty crappy reasons to actually commend a movie. SURE the animation was excellent. It was BEAUTIFUL! But just good CG is NOT enough to make a decent movie (Prequels, anyone?).

Of course the action was cool! It was right on par with DBZ! I love watching people flying around in the air punching each other and driving around on motorcycles doing impossible stunts. BUT, that doesn't belong in an FF7 movie. FF7's story was so AMAZINGLY COMPLEX, and this movie, which is suppose to be a sequel, doesn't even come CLOSE to having a good story. If it had been "Generic Action Movie #109209129," then it possibly could have been half way decent once you took into account the animation.

But it's not "Generic Action Movie #109209129." It's "Final Fantasy 7 : Advent Children."

The entire movie revolves around COOL ACTION, whereas the entire game revolves around story. Jesus christ, have you even PLAYED the game? It escapes me how ANY serious fan of the game could actually ENJOY this movie. AC did to FF7 what TPM did to Star Wars.

If there is some DEEPER MEANING for your enjoyment of the film, please, enlighten me! Let me know how someone could find enjoyment in such an inane, pointless, flawed movie. I'm really dying to know.

Actually, scratch that. You can waste your time with LOL COOL ACTION. I'd prefer to waste mine with LOL INTERNET.

There was a storyline? I must have missed that among all the ass-kicking and sweet effects. Honestly, in terms of coming up with stories (for movies and animes, not necessarily for video games), I don't really give the Japanese much credit. I take everything with a grain of salt, because their culture is vastly different from ours, and as anyone who has been to Japan will tell you, Japanese TV is terrible. This is a generalization, of course; there are animes, movies, etc. out there, made in Japan, with good plots, but I simply don't put as much weight on it when I'm watching something that's been brought over from Japan and subbed, because it's not going to cater to my westernized tastes.

Being emo is popular in Japan. All of the cool characters do it. Cloud does it, and they love him for it. Sasuke (from Naruto) does it, and he's the most popular character in the series. Katsushirou (Samurai 7) did it, and he has girls falling all over him in the anime. Being emo isn't nearly as well-received in the Americas. Their plots are structured differently as well, and so we might not find them to be spectacular.

Really, I just enjoyed the movie because it made the characters I loved from FFVII come to life as impressively-rendered figures to do a bunch of totally awesome fighting.

What the hell are you talking about?! Animes usually are ten times more in-depth and story driven than most American cartoons (or even live action shows, for that matter).

Look at Monster, Kino's Journey, Evangelion, Trigun, Most all Gundam series (with a few exceptions), Paranoia Agent, DNAngel. These are just ones I was able to come up with OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD. If I were to actually sit down and try to compile a full list, I'm POSITIVE I could get in excess of 50 anime which are all driven by the plot and are not just "senseless action."

Of course animes like DBZ or Naruto are going to be more about the ACTION than the story, but they're SHOUNEN JUMP. They're intended for CHILDREN, even over in Japan. The target audience for Naruto is like, 10 - 15 over there. That's why generally these animes are FROWNED UPON, even in the major anime sub-society. Really, when was the last time you saw someone over the age of 15 talking about how SUPER COOL Dragon Ball Z was?

But you know, you must be right. SpongeBob Square Pants is obviously so much more story driven than any Japanese cartoon!

Also, the "ass-kicking" in AC was RIDICULOUS. It wasn't "BADASS" or "SUPER NEAT LOL XD" it was just plain annoying. I mean, obviously the action doesn't need to be REALISTIC, but they broke the suspension of disbelief. I've played through the game several times. It's my second favorite game of all time. But y'know, I don't remember Cloud ever flipping around in the air and then cutting through a motorcycle which was hurled at him by a guy who used his legs to throw it and nothing but one of his arms to support him. I also don't remember him ever jumping literally THOUSANDS of feet into the air so that he can kill a SUMMON MONSTER. I also don't remember him ever being able to take a gun shot DIRECTLY TO HIS FACE from point blank range and not being hurt at all (save a small scratch).

Here's a few shots to show you what I'm talking about (in case you haven't seen the movie):
Throwing a motorcycle
Flipping around in midair to cut through the motorcycle
Being shot in the face from point blank range

It sure was a good thing he had those secret deflective sunglasses! XD
I hate to think what would have happened if he hadn't been wearing them! XD

Also, the story wasn't just BAD. It was COUNTER PRODUCTIVE to the plot of the GAME! It wasn't consistent or accurate at all! I mean, everything from the major problems (Rufus working with Kadaj) to the tiniest little details which you would think they'd be able to fix (the summon materia was blue instead of red). It seriously felt like the writer and director HADN'T EVEN PLAYED THE GAME.

Also, that whole "lol japanese love emo" statement was so stupid. There are just as much "emos" (i hate that term) on American TV as Japanese. Hell, some of the most popular teen shows of ALL TIME had "emos" as the main stars. Look at the OC for crying out loud! Or even Dawson's Creek! They might not of had the look, but they had the attitude.

Also, Sasuke was the most popular character even BEFORE he went emo. He's always been popular because he's BADASS and STRONG. He didn't turn emo until episode 107, when he first realizes that Naruto is stronger than him. The point is, people love him for being BADASS, not emo. His popularity has actually GONE DOWN since he turned emo. He's not even in the opening or closing credits currently!

Ugh. You know, there are SO MANY THINGS wrong with this movie. I honestly could go ON AND ON about how it's terrible, but something tells me you wont listen and don't care. The bottom line is: People who like a movie like AC probably like any kind of "extreme super cool action movie" that's spoonfed to them.

So here are some recommendations for other '05 movies I think you'll enjoy:
Into the Blue.
The Transporter 2.

-edit-
Also, I forgot to add this: FF7 (the game) had one of the most IN-DEPTH STORYLINES IN ANY GAME EVER. That's why it was so revolutionary. It was one of the first console games to have more than 20 hours of gameplay. There was so much going on and so many sub plots. What I'm trying to say here is this: If FF7 the game had a CRAZY in-depth story, then you would EXPECT a sequel to have a GREAT story as well. Don't compare Advent Children to animes like Naruto. Compare it to the game which it's meant to be paired with.

So, after thoroughly enjoying the last two installments, I've been waiting a pretty long time for X3. A couple of weeks ago, a full trailer was released, and I figured you guys would be interested.

Obviously, a few new characters are going to be appearing. Most notable are Angel and Beast (about time we got these two). Beast is going to be played by Kelsey Grammar. That's right, Frasier is Beast!

Kelsey Grammar actually looks pretty badass as Beast! For some more pictures, check out the IMDB page.

Hey, here's a way to make it easier for some of you to join. If you have any kind of IRC client installed, but don't know how to use it, or if you have the Chatzilla Firefox extension, go to this page and click on the big red letters! It should take you right to the OT IRC room.

If you're on a PC, then go here and download mIRC.

Once it's downloaded, install it. Once it's installed, run it. It should automatically open up options the first time you run it. All you need to do is fill out your name (doesn't have to be your real name if you don't want), email address (doesn't have to be your real email address if you don't want), and then your nickname and an alternative nickname (in case the nickname you choose is already taken). Then at the bottom, click OK.

Then, in the text bar, type /server irc.undernet.org and press enter.

when it's done connecting, type /join #originaltrilogy and press enter.

There you go, that's it. If everything works right, you should be able to chat with us.

Here are some other things:
To preform an action, type /me [insert action here]. It will show up as * [Your nickname] [your action]. For example, if you are EATING A PIE and your name is STORMTROOPER666, then type /me is eating a pie and it will show up as * STORMTROOPER666 is eating a pie.

To do colors, press ctrl+k and select what color you want to use. To do bold, type ctrl + b and for underlined type ctrl + u.

There are some other IRC clients you can use if you don't/cant use mIRC. Trillian connects to IRC, but I don't know any of the details on that so I can't really help you. If you're on a mac, then use Colloquy. A lot of people I know have said it's pretty good, and Jay uses it, so if you need help with it, ask him!
