If you’re not using the Kylo Falcon scene, what about the etching of Ahch-To that Rey made in her hideout?
The reason you probably find the dice scene weird is because the whole film pauses for a moment that really has no meaning unless you’ve seen Solo or until you’ve seen TLJ.
Plus it makes it so that the relevance of the dice in TLJ isn’t completely out of left field.
I’ll reconsider my list of changes, but I really do wish to remain distinct from Starlight and avoid bending too much in its direction, even to include stuff I like. It’s there to be viewed in its own right, after all. One thing that may not be obvious unless you’re thinking about going about editing is that Starlight is sort of a gordian knot and some things about it I like only work alongside more extensive changes.
I don’t plan to use the dice scene or Falcon deleted scene, as much as I enjoy them, for instance. Not wanting a huge revamp, just that there’s a few things Starlight presents that enhance TFA:R’s existing goals.
Sounds like I may have to make my own edit that splits the difference between TFA:R and Starlight then 😛

- Story issue: I think Hal’s opening crawl actually works a lot better unfortunately, for two main reasons: A) The second paragraph of Starlight’s is a run-on sentence, which makes it difficult to read (especially in the brief time before it “crawls” away), and B) The third paragraph, outlining that the Republic created the Resistance - that doesn’t mesh with the later scene of Leia complaining that the Republic isn’t taking the threat of the First Order seriously. I’m pretty sure Hal’s crawl clarifies that the Republic wasn’t doing anything, which is why Leia herself had to form the Resistance.
I agree with a lot of what Sherlock and others have said on here, and especially this. One of the common criticisms of the sequel trilogy is that there is no reason for the Resistance to even be called the Resistance. I liked how Hal’s edit corrects this issue. Since the New Republic wasn’t doing anything about the First Order because they didn’t want another war, there are people like Leia that are “resisting” against the Republic’s consensus. The name takes on another meaning once the First Order becomes the main power in the galaxy in TLJ, but up until then it’s important to make this distinction.
Also, when Hux says that the New Republic secretly supports the Resistance, it can be rationalized that he’s referring to the senators and people that are going against the Republic’s decision.
- Intercut deleted scene of Kylo on the Falcon with the prior scenes, altered to include new music and sound effects indicating his happy memories on the ship.
I’m most interested in seeing this. The new placement of this scene by Nev doesn’t interrupt the pacing at all and honestly it has a lot of emotional weight now as well.
The reasoning behind Qui-Gon not being there is that he apparently never studied enough to appear in his physical form, just as a voice. Mortis doesn’t count because that place was crazy powerful with the Force in general.
I love referring to this thing as the Emperor’s “house” and will call it that from now on.

One other tiny thing I’m adjusting for the V2 reissue is to tweak the single shot of Jakku to be a half step closer to how it looks in Starlight. 😉

My 2 cents would be to replace it with the Star Destroyers rising out of the ground (unless that shows up elsewhere).

I definitely don’t disagree, it just isn’t extremely important to me is all. If this is something Hal wants to look at before releasing the fixed v2 that would be neat.
However there’s still one remnant of that plot I caught, that is, on the now separated vision of Kylo Ren at the beggining of the film, we see the the Sith throne for a brief moment. I wonder if it might be better to change this, as to me it signals Kylo’s interest in the throne, which we are trying to distance away from, making the thone only relevant to Rey’s struggle. I’m thinking it could just be changed to a shot of Palpatine, who we hear commanding him to kill Rey.
I also had this thought. But you have to remember that this vision is coming directly from Palpatine. It’s not a visual display of what Kylo himself actually desires. And the beginning of the movie makes it clear that Palps “wants” to give him the throne if he does what he asks. Of course, that’s not what would happen, but it’s what he’s enticing Kylo with.
It’s more of a scenario in which Palps thinks Kylo wants one thing when in reality he wants something else. That is admittedly a bit complicated so your idea has its merits.

Quick question: Are the files on drive the most updated version which fixed the minor issues (Poe saying “up” twice, video errors)? Or is that still a work in progress?
It is a nice idea, especially since we see the Son on Mortis use the same kind of lighting. The only problem really is how hard it would be to execute. There’s lots of blue in that scene, and I’d imagine isolating just the lightning would be a hassle.
I know, this is just backup. You said Nev hasn’t been online for 2 weeks. There’s always a chance it could end up being the only thing outstanding.

Anyways, my point about Rey’s eyes still stands. It would be a 1 second deepfake using the same face as the source so I really can’t imagine anything going wrong.
Actually Luke was footage from the OT, they had Carrie’s daughter do young Leia and used CGI that’s why it looks a little strange.
If anybody is even remotely skilled at deepfaking I’d imagine that dark Rey’s eyes could be taken care of rather easily. Yes, you’d be deepfaking Daisy Ridley’s face onto Daisy Ridley’s face but based on what I understand the eyes would be normal again once finished. Might be something I’ll look into myself eventually if it’s all we are waiting on.
It’s also worth looking into for the brief young Leia appearance in the flashback. Luke looks fine but Leia is definitely in the uncanny valley like her appearance in Rogue One. A simple deepfake should fix that.

That being said, I don’t think KoR dialogue should be excluded entirely from this project. I for one am of the opinion that their scenes are extremely awkward without anybody saying anything.
