Yeah but this is the same Luke who had decided that the Jedi needed to end because they were flawed. And by the end of TLJ he is taught that the next generation needs to grow beyond the past Jedi.

But I see your point regardless. For me, it’s either we make the saga’s theme of sacrificial love conquering selfish love more apparent or we just leave it as-is

Yeah, it could be argued this Luke line to Ben is unneeded, but otherwise it’s only Han and Leia that reach out to him and help him in TROS:

https://youtu.be/REXY9RKk87M?si=UKCP_Fs0CaClCXxN

Plus, it gives an explanation for how the hell he suddenly knows how to Force heal. Luke could have parted that wisdom to him. Definitely doesn’t need to be in this edit whatsoever, but I might consider it for my own personal copy.

As for the other Luke lines, I want to wait until we have a general consensus on what he should say before I generate anything else.

The only place I can think of is when Ben picks up Rey’s body: he quickly jerks his head and looks around the area as if he heard somebody speaking. Luke could say something to him there. Not sure what exactly.

There’s already a lot happening in the intro of the movie, and there wouldn’t be any visual reaction if Luke spoke to him. So that’s a tough sell imo.

Luke talks to Kylo? Have “See ya around kid” from TLJ actually foreshadow TROS 😉

Unfortunately he also said he doesn’t want to upend Luke’s epic first appearance. Not unless it were something truly warranted and seamless. I can’t think of any Kylo scene off the top of my head where it would help.

I’m of the opinion that Leia needs to have a very specific reason for abandoning her Jedi path in order for it to be satisfying. Plus, this way she is explicitly following in the footsteps of her mother, Padme.

If it is because she thought it was more helpful to be a politician, why is that? If she would’ve remained a Jedi she wouldn’t have had to look for Luke all throughout the trilogy to gain his help. They could’ve just been fine with her.

The Resistance wouldn’t have even existed in Episode 7, for one thing. The relationships she made helped form it. Luke’s Jedi Order was also very secluded from the galaxy (and for good reason, look at what happened last time).

Jar Jar! Sounds great! Very funny we posted the Luke stuff at practically the same time LOL. As for the “Leia knew it too.” replacement, how about something like:

Luke: "Because you’re a Palpatine? I wanted to help you; I told Leia.

Rey: “She didn’t tell me. She still trained me.”

Luke: “Because she saw your spirit, your heart. Rey, some things are stronger than blood.”

I already suggested that to Hal when we were coming up with ideas for this scene last time around. He doesn’t like the idea that Luke can know everything and tell anyone he wants this divine knowledge.

We also didn’t want it to make it seem like Rey is destined for darkness. So a “dark calling” is also off the table. I landed on what I did because it implies a struggle but something that she can overcome.

Luke sounds absolutely AMAZING. Here is a way we can reintegrate Leia having known about Rey’s struggle with the dark side:

And here is a line to give Leia some closure with the Jedi that makes sense in canon:

I’m using default TROS for both of these examples just for ease of use. v4 is shaping up to be pretty epic though.

Yeah, it sounds completely seamless. I don’t have any particular preference on wording, but fleet-killing weapons does sound less MacLunkey than Dreadnaught tier laser cannons.

Although, one thing I’ve noticed through doing the AI lines this way is that it’s always significantly quieter than whatever you’re trying to match. Hopefully some adjusting can fix that.

Kylo Ren as a character has always said things in a very direct and matter-of-fact way throughout the entire trilogy.

“The map to Skywalker. We know you found it. And now you’re going to give it to the First Order.”

“I feel it again. The pull to the light. The Supreme Leader senses it.”

“I know what I have to do but I don’t know if I have the strength to do it”

“Let the past die. Kill it if you have to. That’s the only way to become what you were meant to be.”

“You’re a ghost. In a rotting clone. What could you give me?”

I dunno, it just fits.

The original AI Kylo line which mentions a clone sounds like 90% there now:

Since it sounds so close to his other lines we could also replace “What could you… give me?”

As for why this is necessary, I am of the opinion that the vat of clones is easy to miss for a first time viewer. I had to go back and point it out to those watching with me. Also, it’s not really as if Kylo is breaking the fourth wall here and “reading the script”. He’s literally seen the other clones, and can put two and two together to make things clearer for the audience.

I’ll see what I can do tonight. But all of this has helped me realize that we could try to replicate Luke again using his lines from just TROS. One thing one of my audience members immediately pointed out was that it was kinda dumb that Leia just stopped being a Jedi because of a feeling.

Also, we could reintegrate Leia having known about the dark side calling out to Rey (not necessarily that she was a Palpatine) but still chose to train her regardless.

“Lightspeed clipped” sounds pretty good actually. Imagine a galaxy where people are entering and exiting lightspeed all the time and there’s always a chance of some little thing showing up in front of them to cause massive damage. It’s definitely a costly error.

I’m not sure what method you are using for the Poe lines but they sound pretty incredible.

Also, where would Leia’s “you are family” go exactly? It’s clever to replace “brother’s saber” with “family’s saber” but as I recall there isn’t a place to put Leia’s response to that in the scene. I think it would be best to place it where “A Jedi needs her weapon” currently sits.

For Kylo’s AI line, I reduced its pitch by a decent amount before giving it to Hal. I wonder if it might have helped to pitch up the line present in the original film to help bring them in line with each other?

For Leia’s saber line, my thinking was that “Rey, never be afraid of who you are” speaks only to the idea that there is an inner darkness in her that she should have the courage to face. Whereas with the added line, it gains a second meaning in that Leia is telling her that she’s a Jedi and she should never doubt that about herself. Which ties in with her modified one-liner to Palpatine: “I am a Jedi”. She’s repeating what Leia directly told her.

For what it’s worth, I put like 2-3 additional AI lines into v3 before watching it with the others. And even then, when I outright asked them what lines seemed off, they said that Poe’s mouth movement was off and that Kylo’s line at the beginning seemed new because it mentioned a clone.

That was it.

Neither of them had seen the movie since it first came out and purposely forgot a lot of it. So essentially first-timers.

Like I said, I’m 99% sure it was the TV color settings. It looks fine on my laptop.

I did just remember that I received one rating, although it wasn’t numerical. He said that it was the best of the sequel trilogy (after having seen Starlight and my hybrid edit of Rekindled/Legendary). Which was surprising. That being said, he never liked TLJ, and TROS was admittedly made for those who didn’t like that movie.

Thank you to Hal and everyone else in the community! I enjoyed collaborating with you all.

Just got done with a watch party of v3, and everyone really liked it. They said everything from the plot to explanations of Palpatine’s return/fleet were much more clearly laid out and understandable. It was also exceedingly apparent that the film touched on the core themes of Star Wars. In other words, it “just felt like Star Wars”. The Force ghosts contributed greatly to a feeling of conclusion and finality in this 9-episodic saga. Especially Ben Solo’s ghost at the end, which makes Rey’s identity with the Skywalker family more touching and believable. The new ending makes you feel good because it seems like the gang is going on more adventures together!

Only two things were picked up on:

  • The lipsync of Poe in the Resistance briefing is off. The voice did sound near perfect, however. Granted, there’s not a lot we can do about this. It’s worth noting that this is one of the only AI lines that was spotted (so we did good work there!)
  • The new shading of Leia’s lightsaber looked too blue in the flashback. A viewer was confused when Rey ignited it on Exegol and it was purple. However, I’m confident this was merely a problem with our TV because it looks perfect on my laptop. Not sure what exactly happened here.

Overall, as I stated before, this is a magnificent edit. I didn’t ask for ratings, but at least in my books, it goes from the original being a 6.5/10 to a 9/10 easily.
