Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

IlFanEditore, spot on about Luke. TLJ was the film in the sequel trilogy most devoted to telling a story first and foremost. Abrams was the one more concerned with giving Wookieepedia authors something to get excited for and visuals with no real meaning or purpose to them. Johnson made sure everything connected and had consequence.

And while Finn and Rose going to Canto Bight may feel like a side adventure, it drives the main plot and has the largest impact on the climax. It’s because of Finn and Poe (who sent Finn) that they’re caught, that most of the Resistance gets destroyed, etc. It’s even because of the Canto Bught sequence that Rey and Kylo don’t kill each other, their fight over Anakin’s lightsaber being interrupted by the Holdo manoeuvre that became the only solution to DJ’s betrayal.

Rey stalking Luke didn’t drive the plot forward, and Poe stalling to give Finn more time didn’t drive the plot forward: Finn and Rose going to Canto Bight did.

Boba had a theme?

It’s quite prominent really… Not sure how anyone could miss it.

I was more curious to his theme from the OT, personally. While I know he was at one point intended as the big bad to VI, I thought that was abandoned fairly early (hence his disposal in the Sarlacc). Does he have a Williams theme?

Uh, what? In TFA, Rey accepts her family is never coming back to see or get her, and Finn learns to stop running away from the First Order and fight for someone: Rey.

She doesn’t really accept that, she just swaps out Luke as the one she’s searching for, it’s even spoken in dialogue. That’s not an arc. And Finn wanting to get into Rey’s pants isn’t really an arc either…

Thinking about in in that context confuses me even more! Haha. I honestly have always hated that scene. She’s memorialising a man and woman she cares about in the place that Luke spent every moment trying to escape and never returning to, and where Leia had never even been to, having been made into a sex slave by a giant slug nearby. And that’s assuming Luke talked about Tatooine a bunch, and where the exact location of the Lars homestead was after having been abandoned in the desert for about 35 years… Linking it to Shmi puts more weight on how silly that scene was.

Is it possible to have Rey go to Naboo instead of Tatooine and set Anakin, Luke (yes, Luke’s green lightsaber) and Leia’s lightsabers beside or inside Padmé’s tomb? Setting the lightsabers beside or inside Padmé’s tomb would be symbolic of the Skywalker family finally getting to be together after death.

We don’t have footage of her tomb, so that would have to be created from scratch. We’d also have to colour-correct Rey to be in a dark tomb rather than a bright desert. And it would also raise the question of how does Rey even know who Padmé is? Luke and Leia never knew Padmé, though Leia knew of her ostensibly…

If any of this were possible, I feel like Ahch-To would’ve been a better place, as if she’s planting the seed of a new Jedi Order where the last Order had their first Jedi Temple. That would still be incredibly difficult, and potentially just as impossible.

It’s too connected to the rest of the word, it doesn’t quite work. The articles “a” and “the” are both about a frame long, and the word “all” is as well. So, taking “a” from another word becomes really tricky, as in other words is doesn’t feel complete or it’s too connected to the rest of the word.

But I’m willing to try reads from elsewhere!

Would this be considered for V2?

Replacing Rey’s line:
“And I… I’m all the Jedi”
with
“And I… I’m a Jedi”

That’s what’s there, but both “the” that I’m replacing and “a” that’s being added in are only a frame long, so it’s not super enunciated. I don’t mind Palpatine calling himself all of the Sith, as that’s the entire plot/villain’s motivation and retcon for the rule of two.

Hal’s not using it anyway, so it doesn’t matter.

Jake, the second clip works really well with Rey’s part. I like that much better … it’s such a goofy line in context in the original scene since … she’s not. Plus a funny take away from that too is she’s pretty much saying “Who cares if you are all the Sith, I’m a Jedi” and defeats him. Lol.

Didn’t notice that, such a weird error… Links were updated above, but here they are again:

Just was Rey says “A Sith Wayfinder” when she’s talking to Leia should work.

That works really well, although the next series of frames of Palpatine after “am” is a bit misplaced in comparison to that specific one.

It’s a slight jump cut, yeah. That’s why I made the other one as well, flows better.

Somewhere, several pages ago, someone mentioned implying Leia was more responsible for the Han apparition. I had mocked this up awhile back if this is helpful:

At the risk of annoying everybody, I put together another version of my tie sequence including a brand new shot of the ties with the castle in the background.

Please keep in mind that I’m doing this purely for my own enjoyment, not to try to impress anyone or to try to convince Hal9000 to include this in his edit. I’ll be putting this in my own personal edit, but if anyone wants to use it in theirs, that would be cool, too.

As someone in this community once said, “The best edit is always your own.”

Right on!

Can you send this to me without any added music? Really like the concept, but the music feels too looped over the Battlefront Footage.

Is it possible to properly remove the “all” from both the lines of dialogue in that final exchange between Palpatine and Rey to make the dialogue less clunky, without suddenly skipping a couple of frames or anything?

Here’s an attempt with taking out both instances of “all”:

It didn’t work as well with Palpatine, so here’s a version with “Am all the Sith” and “Am the Jedi”, which I think works better:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/19fyIDkqbRyYLYFp4gFN88l9JL5D1zkpF/view?usp=sharing

Both have music lined up at the top and tail, the music cut out for a beat at the end in the original version, so I was able to keep it clean and in sync. The music comes back in sync with the original film after her line, right as she strikes with the second saber.

I’m finding the same with After effects. Roto2 tool just doesn’t pick up the colour well. I’m doing something similar with Poe’s shirt and I think I’m gonna have to paint each frame.

Wait, you’re changing Poe’s clothes? I’m curious about that if you have a sample…

I think it’s possible to do. Give me a bit and I’ll post a link of it. Kinda distracted by USA news… 😳

Luke just didn’t know the saber was destroyed. He wasn’t in Snoke’s throne room. Everything about the projection was designed to anger Kylo more. And Kylo was clouded by his anger, and unable to think about the saber’s destruction.

I think the scene would’ve worked just as well with the green saber, just think both would’ve made Kylo think about it too much and realise it wasn’t real.

With Luke giving Rey Leia’s saber, I wonder if he got rid of his Lightsaber between the destruction of the temple and his arrival on Ahch-To.

That’s the point though, having both sabers would’ve made everyone more aware of the destroyed saber being used. Luke didn’t know it had been broken apart, but knew Kylo would be further angered by its use. I know a lot of people didn’t even think about the destroyed saber being the one used when they first saw the scene.

I don’t think Kylo would fall for the projection of both sabers were used. I think he’d have been more aware and suspicious. Swapping to the green makes sense, but I prefer it as is.
