The Finn line is tricky. It might be unclear what is happening off Exegol. We see all the ships on Exegol shut down because of their loss of connection, right? And then the off-world Star Destroyers are destroyed because of the galactic uprising, and those are just people doing it on their own. It’s unrelated to the Exegol connection thing being destroyed. That line from Finn, while it doesn’t make much sense, is necessary to convey the message that an actual uprising is happening all over the place at this time, not that the ships are just shutting down together (unless… they were just shutting down together.)

The line could be slipped backward to be voiceover with the montage of that helps bring clarity to the scene.

I personally think the line is unnecessary, especially as everyone rising up across the Galaxy is ostensibly on Exegol before leaving to liberate their home planets/systems. That’s why I’m still more in favour of moving the montage to be between the Ajan Kloss celebration and Tatooine end scene.

I have a little nitpick with the force ghost scene in the final battle in the movie, am I the only one who thinks it would make more sense to have Sebastian Shaw, the original actor who played Anakin in the ending of ROTJ, instead of Hayden Christensen? We have an old Obi Wan, and old Luke, but Anakin who is the grandfather of Luke is still young, it’s just a little nitpick in my part, it doesn’t work that much for me, other than that, the edit and concept of that scene is still fantastic, and I’m a big fan of the work that has been done by the fan edit community, it’s fantastic!

Jonh had something in the works (as requested) when I spoke with him a couple months ago. The little work in progress he was working on looked great. Luckily, Anakin is just standing there still in the scene, so we could use still images for it. I hope Shaw gets the Star Wars justice he deserves!

My argument for it not being canon is… Obi Wan gets both voice and physical spirit mixed up with Ewan and Alec. So why can’t we have the voice of Hayden and the appearance of Sebastian Shaw? 😁

Because we don’t have archival footage of Shaw… maybe you can make it with the reface app or something like that… but I think it’s a lot of effort for very little reward.

Between Hayden being in the RotJ scene (canonically) and only having the one weird smile for Shaw… This seems like an unrealistically difficult nitpick.

It’s also not Shaw’s voice in the scene, but Christensen’s.

As far as technology acceleration, look no further than the first Death Star taking ~25 years and the second taking ~6 years to build.

And trust me: story is more important at Lucasfilm than continuity or canon technicalities. If you think it improves the story, that’s what you go with. Not everyone will agree with you, but it’s your cut. You’re the new director, you call the shots. If someone doesn’t like it, they can learn iMovie, Premiere Rush, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Avid Media First, or Avid Media Composer.

EDIT:

Also, if anyone has aspirations for a career in editing, Avid Media First is free and works exactly like the expensive Media Composer all the pros use. It is cantankerous and annoying, but it’s the real deal and it’s free.

I’ve been thinking about JakeRyan’s suggestion of rescoring the fleet moment. At first I thought it was unnecessary, but recently I’ve found that the music from Revenge of the Sith’s opening scene fits perfectly with the scene in my opinion. I know someone else did an edit along those lines, but this version starts off with the deleted opening of the track, which I think is an epic way to announce the arrival of the fleet.

Here’s an extremely rough edit of my suggestion. Of course, someone would need to mix the audio properly, but this is just an idea.

Love this idea, I tried to mix it in a bit more, and swapped out the lead in music (again, so it doesn’t feel like names in blue should be over a star field).

It wasn’t the sequel trilogy, it was Abrams’ and Terrio’s final script, and even that was instigated by Carrie’s death. Everything else has been pretty well planned out (even if fans didn’t like the plans or didn’t guess everything prior to a release).

As for lightsaber colors, things that small just don’t matter in future instalments. A story decision in Clone Wars (to further visualise Ahsoka’s and Anakin’s relationship) superseded the previous description of events with the green sabers. Time that isn’t expressed on screen or in prominent prose shifts (a timeline on wookiepedia is not more relevant than the media it’s describing, for example).

Also, a lot of these details won’t be revisited, especially not right away. They aren’t gonna do a prequel that goes to Kef Bir any time soon, and there’s no current reason to revisit the planet any time soon.

So, be more casual with the canon. Creators are. Canon is only important until it gets in the way of story.

Just learned that Christopher Sean (the voice actor for Kaz in Resistance) has a Cameo account where you can pay $30 for him to record any video/message. Given that his ship and a few others from the show were created for TROS but unused and the novelization included him along with a line of dialogue, would anyone be interested in group-funding him to record the line for the edit? Inferno Squad was included so I figure there will also be interest in this. The novelization goes:

“Zay Versio with Inferno Squad, standing by. Look at all these ships!”
“Fireball, here. Hi everyone!”
“Cut the chatter, Kaz,” a deep voice responded.

Given how short the line is I’m not sure if enough people would be interested in chipping in a bit so maybe the line could also be spliced together from show dialogue? Along with Yeager’s line in response.

Just want to see Resistance included 😃

Those lines actually were recorded, using impersonators. They were just buried deep in the audio mix to avoid standing out from the rest of the fleet dialogue.

It would still be cool to have the actual actor record them.

I don’t remember whose recordings each was, but as it stands here’s what I’ve implemented:

As Chewie runs off on Pasaana, two KoR say, “Solo’s Wookiee,” and “I get his teeth.” The latter turns his head and it feels like it always was that way.

On Kijimi, the KoR step into frame and the apparent leader says, “Palpatine wants the girl alive. Kill the rest.”

On Exegol, as the KoR step out from around the corner to confront Ben, two say, “Well look who finally made it,” and “Traitor!” The latter is an obvious mirror to Kylo in TFA, highlighting his transformation.

Later, when he pulls the lightsaber out of his ass, a KoR says, “What? How?” And then they all get chopped up, with a few vocalizations that have always been there.

I don’t think these are intrusive, and are 4 out of 6 possible moments for KoR dialogue. (Excluded are “may our bond never again be shattered” during the helmet reforging, and “You betray us for a scavenger” between the other two Exegol lines.)

As far as adding lines, these are the ones that would make sense. I’d love to see them in context, especially if they have effects to match the original vox from the film.

Just seeking some clarification after watching the newest workprint (which is exceptional). Is there still a plan for Ben to be incorporated as a force ghost with Luke and Leia at the end of the film? I think this is an absolute must in my opinion. I had already seen a few mockups on youtube with him inserted. Is anyone in particular working on this or willing to take it up? I wish I had the skills to pull off such an endeavor, but no doubt in my mind the talent on here can pull if off for sure! Keep up the great work everyone and thanks for everything Hal.

+1000 extremely vital. While we’re at it, I’d LOVE to see Anakin with those three too. The Skywalker family 😃

I’d like to have Anakin there too but rey has no idea who Anakin is so it wouldn’t make sense to have him there, Ben solo is a must though

She knows who Vader is, but really it’s about Ben. The whole story of this trilogy was his redemption. He should be shown as redeemed (like Anakin in Return of the Jedi).

Here is a quick mockup:

I kept Finn and Rey’s interaction, while removing lightspeed skipping references. I feel like Chewie’s growl now could mean he is telling Rey about the intel, and then she turns her head and asks Poe about it. I don’t know if her looking in poe’s direction before the cut would need to be extended or not. Thoughts?

That’s similar to one of my older versions. There’s a similar difficulty with her read of “Poe” not quite matching her still jaw. Otherwise it looks great!

Thanks, and when she says “Poe” the intention was to have it be apart of the next scene, as if she’s saying “Poe, what happened?”. That’s why I’m thinking maybe her being still and looking at Poe could be extended by a few frames.

Yeah, I get that. That’s kinda what my intention was with using “What happened?” as she turned back to camera before her lips moved, but it didn’t connect that way for others here.

I think it works well enough though!

I know I’ve complained a bit about the nostalgic music themes being overused in the sequels, but this idea really resonated with me:

https://youtu.be/qVDXwkmgUXY?t=125

I like how that version of the Force theme now establishes a parallel between two Skywalkers being set free (Anakin freed from slavery and Tatooine, Ben freed from the dark side and his inner conflict).

Oddly it does remind me of the prequels in an odd way too.

That’s because the music is actually from the prequels, in the scene where Anakin says goodbye to his mother.

Gotcha, don’t know why it reminds me of Empire so much then, haha 😅

Sounds like a nice idea to sneak in Palpatine guiding Kylo, though the actual lines maybe should be quieter, or disguised between some sound effects (like the “ForceTime” or Sith whispers) to convey the feeling this is Palpatine actually speaking to Kylo’s mind, rather than a voiceover. The “Do it!” could also be placed closer to the music swell to fit better with the emotional crescendo.

Nice job!

Cheers, I’ll make those adjustments and have a new version up in a bit.

Here’s an updated version of that scene the way I cut it. Must’ve accidentally slipped/cut something out, my bad.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zXtJBbvOBs3zNmKIiX6LfmS0J8TM-WT5/view?usp=sharing

Probably early stages, but that cut seemed rough.

I’m only ever working on it in the middle of the night, with no feedback beyond “that’s dumb” or something. 😅

The tough thing with re-editing Abrams’ films is his “dancing shots”. That’s a jump cut to be sure, but partially because of the way each shot tracks and frames up multiple shots, “dancing” around. I’m trying to get the spin just right, but no matter what, Rey goes from facing one direction to the other.

Maybe I need to cut from her turn to her walking into frame when Poe is examining BB-8? Right before they walk off or something? I think most of that beat is surrounding Lightspeed Skipping though, I’ll have to look if it works.

Post-v1 Changes (so far):

Added Palpatine goading Kylo to kill Leia in TLJ. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bwXR7hUwZ7lZLbEfBkLQiRYZhi6K6sdN/view?usp=sharing

Smoothed out a transition where Rey’s “What happened?” is asked prior to the scene transition (without her lips moving) at the beginning of TROS as a means of cutting Lightspeed skipping.
