Star Trek Deep Space Nine - NTSC DVD Restoration & 1080p HD Enhancement (Emissary Released)
Time

Not to derail the thread but i wasn’t aware there was a good source for Babylon 5. The DVD is fake widescreen and you cannot find the original 4:3 ratio version on DVD.

And with frame blending due to the special effects you cannot restore 24 fps.

As for SG1 i hope you use the uncut pilot film and not the censored directors cut version.

Modern SE Revisionism
Time

Even if they were allowed how would they show the original for a re-release for the 40TH anniversary.

It was never restored. It is all well and good to dig up a print and show it. But Lucasfilm never bothered to restore the theatrical cuts of the films.

People talk all the time about the films not being available on home video, but they are not available for theatrical distribution either. It was a huge oversight on Lucas part to not restore the originals, it was a deliberate oversight.

Info Wanted: Are there any 1997 Special Edition 4K Scans available?
Time

The one i downloaded has black bars on all sides . I thought it rather strange to be honest. Not sure if i screwed something up. It won’t display in 16:9 i have to watch it full frame to get the image to fit my laptop.

It was really strange like a letterboxed edition. I haven’t seen anything like that since the Gout DVDs.

The picture quality is much better than the Reivex or however it was spelled.

Maybe VLC Is the problem as to why it won’t display like an anamorphic film.

I like that it has 3 audio selections. The Laserdisc audio, DTS theatrical or optical audio from the print.

Edit: looks like it was just VLC its doing the same thing for 16mm Empire Strikes back.

I’m really going to have to get another software but MPC is no longer updated.

If you had to keep one Special Edition change…?
Time

Fixing the Landspeeder shot which i also agree with Lucas on, but none of the other changes. Beyond restoring the sound and picture. Or removing garbage mattes or matte lines.

I think they went too far with some of the re-composited effects. And i dislike that they zoomed in the picture in Empire Strikes Back on the Millennium Falcon. Fixing the disappearing Snow Speeder was fine though. The transparency was always horrible.

Or when they fixed the shot of Luke swinging at Palpatine in Return of the Jedi that also was a good change. Misaligned rotoscope on lightsabers is forgivable because it is not revisionist imho.

George Lucas' Special Edition plans
Time

They really meant it in 1995 that it would be the last time to own the pre 1997 trilogy, up until the bootleg market forced them to include letterbox transfers on the 2006 DVD set. All 3 were the same 1993 scan. The so called original versions. Kershner basically gave his consent to the 1997 edit of Empire. Marquand wasn’t alive to do so. If Lucas was going to do cgi cartoon versions of the films, why would he stop at one movie.
The problem is burying and suppressing the originals.

They haven’t done a new restoration of the OT ever. They telecined a print in 1992 to d1 tape. And have done nothing since. Lucas didn’t want to spend a dime on restoring the original version. He wanted to basically remake the films from the ground up as he always envisioned them. Without totally reshooting the entire trilogy.

The Rise Of Skywalker - Abrams' Vision or Executive Meddling?
Time

I don’t concur. I liked Rise of Skywalker and Force Awakens. And i liked the 2 Abrams Star Trek films.

I will admit he has a weakness with pacing in his films. Uses too much lens flare and shaky cam, and is very bad at dialog and exposition. But the action is always fast paced and exciting and engaging.

I don’t think its his fault Star Wars is kind of played out. There is only so many times you can return to the same characters and situations and keep them interesting.

The one character i wanted to see more of was Luke. They did next to nothing with him. I mean after 35 years that was it? I welcomed the retcon in ROS but it was too little too late. He was finally our Luke again, but a mere cameo and force ghost.

Would it not be amazing if we got a Darth Vader movie directed by Christopher Nolan?
Time

Nolan would never direct Star Wars for the same reason he will never direct a James Bond film. EON and Lucasfilm would never cede control. Every decision he made would have to be approved by committee or based on some sort of decision based on the brand and marketing. Plus its George Lucas story and arena and he wouldn’t want to do someone else’s story. The Dark Knight trilogy was different because not only did Warner’s allow him to do his own thing, but it was a different adaptation of Batman. He wasn’t told to continue Schumacher, or Burton. Its also a project he was passionate about being a fan of the Batman comics, he went out on a limb and pitched it to the studio. I just don’t see him being that interested about Star wars. Also he was able to have free reign because Batman and Robin tarnished and ruined the brand. So anything that was not absolute trash was an improvement leading to the success of Batman Begins.

All Things Star Trek
Time

How were they able to get around the CBS fanfilm guidelines. That state a film has to be a certain length and cannot use trademarked materials or things which are copyright to them.

I mean the film opens with the music from the Wrath of Khan, lol. And Nichelle Nichols narrates the opening. An actress who has worked on official Star Trek.

How do you feel about Star Wars being re-titled A New Hope in 1981?
Time

Even though the movie had a new crawl and subtitle the box art just said Star Wars. and so did the rental stand at the video store.
I’m speaking of the original laserdisc and VHS and Beta releases and they did not say a New Hope on the box art or dustjacket. Even though the movie says so.

Even the one last time release just referred to the film as Star Wars, and so did Leonard Maltin on the tape.
I could be wrong but i think it only started being called a New Hope on the box art in the year 2000.

George Lucas' Technicolor print
Time

I only want the 1997 version and the originals. There is no need to include the Maclunky edition, or the 2011 edit. There is already a boxed set of those for both of them. One a Blu-ray set and the other 4K.

All i’ve ever wanted was the theatrical releases and the theatrical special edition and theatrical Phantom Menace.
It shouldn’t be that difficult. Other studios do catalog releases all the time.
Let me buy official Blu-Rays and 4K UHD discs of them so i can finally retire my laserdiscs.

What are you reading?
Time

I’m reading The making of Superman. I just finished the making of Star Trek II. And had previously finished the making of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Star Trek II’s making of book was utterly disappointing. Other than the section on the Special Effects and how they went through the different permutations with the screenplay, there was very little useful information gleaned into the films making.
