Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader-My Youtube channel about film transfers, Laserdisc and film theory
Time

I added The Spy Who loved me Laserdisc, Dr No Laserdisc, and Goldfinger Laserdisc from the Japan remastered series to my collection. I also had recently purchased from russia with love from the same series. Only Spy who loved me has its Obi and original seal.

Not sure if you did a video on those Captain Solo.

I also picked up the Man with the Golden Gun first issue for the double gatefold, its beautiful.

Solo: A Star Wars Story — Official Review and Opinions Thread — SPOILERS
Time

I have to say i went back and watched this again and i liked it a lot better than the first time i watched it.
Alden does a pretty good Harrison impression in one or two scenes. And of course Donald Glover was fantastic.
I think this film was unfairly maligned due to the Last Jedi backlash. Ron Howard is a talented guy and he got good performances out of the actors. I really liked Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton. And the stand out by far and most interesting character for me wasn’t Han at all it was Enfys Nest.

Would it not be amazing if we got a Darth Vader movie directed by Christopher Nolan?
Time

I have liked the Dark Times comics about Vader, The first and second of the Marvel series and Doctor Aphra.
The Dark Times ones are no longer canon. I would be lying i i said i wouldn’t watch a high budget Darth Vader a Star Wars movie film. But i just don’t see the point. The character has been overused in the old EU and New EU. While there is a lot of unexplored areas of the Star Wars universe and new worlds and characters, in a far future or far past setting they could do movies about without having to go back to the OT or the prequels to draw on.

They should do more non Jedi and Sith stuff, but they also should due a series about the dawn of the jedi and the beginnings of the Sith. They don’t have to be beholden to the Kotor games, the Old republic or tales of the jedi because non it is canon.

Vader has been explored, but a Luke Skywalker Jedi teacher series on Disney Plus set between episodes VI and VII is unexplored. And Lucasfilm could use de-aging tech and have Mark Hamill do it.

Anyway who would they cast as Vader. Would they show Vader in his chamber with his mask off all scarred and stuff with Hayden in heavy makeup. Like some fans want. It would be cheaper to use some random and put them in the suit and in closeups without the mask and in makeup.

Anyway i have no idea what Lucasfilm’s plans are but i do think at some point Vader will show up in a future season of Obi Wan if there are more than one, or the Mandalorian. More cameos. Like Rogue One, and the animated rebels.

Were the prequels released on 70mm, and were the sequels released on film other than IMAX 70mm?
Time

I don’t know how many were made but i have seen cut film cels from Rogue One and Last Jedi on 35mm. That leads me to believe there must have been prints somewhere in the world.

There was no 70mm Imax on film for rise of skywalker that was confirmed. But i have never been able to find out if Last Jedi was on 70mm film. I know Force Awakens was.

Rise of Skywalker being on liemax was a disappointment but was still the premiere way to see the movie and the only venue consistently sold out.

How many times have you bought the movies?
Time

I was going through my collection and apparently i have all 3 Pal UK pan and scan releases for the Star Wars trilogy. I just assumed i only had Empire Strikes back and return of the jedi.
I don’t have a pal player. But i had someone else play and check the discs Star wars and empire are rotters, and the last time i checked return of the jedi was rot free. Jedi came from a sealed copy i myself opened and is mint. Empire and Star Wars are used condition.
I also found my CED copies and Return of the Jedi is in a white caddy.
Pulled out my copy of Phantom Menace and it is as new factory mint but not sealed anymore. Just opened and watched once. Just like my copies of the Special Collections were previously sealed copies.
Still trying to find a 1982 or 1983 pressing of the original Laserdisc release from USA without laser rot, since both copies exhibit it to varying degrees one pressed in Japan and the other USA, i’m beginning to believe it does not exist.

I haven’t played my Evergreen disc yet so i cannot say whether that is the same master as the original USA pressing just reissued in Japan with digital audio. the 1992 edition, 1985 and, 1982/83 are all different masters on the US editions.

Edit addendum:
So i pulled out my Copy of Return of the Jedi 1986 pan and scan from Japan and it had succumbed to laser rot So i had to buy another copy. And i also got star wars 83 and empire 84 from Japan.

Id also like them to do animated movies or series for other things like Indiana Jones for instance. Not just Star Wars. And adapt some of the legends material into non canon animated films. I mean using the DC illustration, they have a sort of multiverse where different canons exist for Superman and Batman stories that are not all in the same continuity.

I have to say its become almost an unhealthy obsession like gambling. I really need to stop buying these, at least i never went so far down the rabbit hole i bought VHD discs. But i will complete my collection of Original OT releases from japan if not the special edition, or the second much more expensive definitive collection box. Don’t see a need to get making of Star Wars or Classic Creatures on LD either because i have the VHS releases. I only now need Star Wars 83, empire 84, empire 86 and star wars 86. for a complete collection of the movies from japan.

Best and Worst Movies: The Thread
Time

I’ve sort of come to like and enjoy Temple of Doom, and even to a much lesser extent Crystal Skull. Considered the bad movies in the Indiana Jones series. Raiders of the Lost Ark is the best in the series. The only aspect i like in Crystal Skull is it bookends Raiders, and is a fitting end for the series. I have no idea why they have to make a fifth movie. Unless its another one of those passing the torch things like the Disney Star Wars trilogy.

A movie where he hunts down and destroys the remaining Jedi to the last man or woman is what i always wanted to see and did not get with the prequels. Vader in the suit. But i don’t see what that offers to expanding the Star Wars mythos, seems to limit it in a way. Star Wars needs to move beyond nostalgia and the OT. If anything as much as i enjoyed them the sequels proved that. Star Wars is stuck in the past. There are so many worlds, creatures and adventures they could create and make something new and fresh. But of course that involves risk. How much risk is Disney into these days. I think they like to play things safe.

Original Trilogy Edits - some changes are justified
Time

McDiarmid replaced the original actor cast for the Emperor on Return of the Jedi, and no it was not Clive Revill.

I don’t think they ever revealed the actors name but he was older than Ian and couldn’t wear the special contacts in his eyes. So it was serendipity that Ian ended up playing Emperor Palpatine at all.

As for the new shot in Empire since 2004 i hate it. It does not match his look in ROTJ, and the dialog is much worse than the original.

Also i can understand Lucas decision to put Hayden into Return of the Jedi and that it makes his 1-6 edit make more sense, but i never liked that change. Maybe i’m blinded by nostalgia, but i always liked Sebastian Shaw in that scene.
I also really hate the new voice for Boba Fett. I like the actor Temuera but his lines are delivered all wrong. Like he was recorded over the telephone reading a phone book or something. No gravitas or menace to his intonation.

Star Wars Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

The X-wing game was difficult but no way near as hard as tie fighter. That game was super hard.
Never had the chance to find an Empire Strikes Back arcade as they were not widely released like Star Wars was.

The Sega arcade was in every movie theater and gaming establishment so it was not hard to find.
Star Wars pinball also was not rare but episode I pinball was.
I once played Phantom Menace pinball and i didn’t like it nearly as much as the Star Wars one with the Artoo Detoo which they had at the bowling alley.

Dealing with People Selling Fan Projects
Time

The dude with a website only selling depecialized and grindhouse, how is that legally allowed. I mean why does Disney allow it. And how about that UK seller almost exclusively selling 4K77 and 4K83 discs with DNR and non DNR versions, and the Mandalorian and the Holiday Special, and Harmy Empire Strikes Back. And Ebay just allows it.

I mean i guess its pointless for me to even do anything or complain about it, like going into my comic shop and all the guy was selling was bootleg Star Wars DVD’s and posters. Now i was ripped off on the DVD’s. But at least i had the Steve Sansweet book to know the posters were illegitimate.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Well i was only thinking of how disappointed i was as a consumer. I never considered that the 4K masters would be useful for fanedits or for someone like Harmy to do a new edition of despecialized. In that i agree with the sentiments of it being useful. Not sure how you regain detail lost from it being scrubbed by overly zealous “film restorationists” But that is beyond my station. I’m no colorist or editor, Or fan restorer.

The films looked less than detailed, and A New Hope is the worst it has ever sounded in my opinion. I fell for the hype and had to get the new edition. Better than the 2011 set, yes i agree with major caveats. Better color and no edge enhancement and depending on the scene more detail but its not consistent. No original audio mix and no original version alone is enough to take away several stars from the reissue, again my opinion YMMV.

Name Something You Unreservedly Love About The Rise Of Skywalker
Time

I liked that they gave Carrie Fisher’s Leia prominence in the film. That she trained Rey. That it was kind of her film as much as it was Daisy Ridley’s film. All of the original characters were actually treated with reverence and respect in the rise of skywalker. Everything was neatly tied up and the saga is complete. As it was in 1983, and in 2005.
