What's the justification/in-universe explanation for this Darth Vader SE change?
Time

It is such an unnecessary change. The makeup for Palpatine doesn’t match Return of the Jedi either. Worse dialog as well. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi is better by Clive Revill.

If they had to make the change should have matched the Jedi makeup, used the original line reading and had Ian McDiarmid use the same inflection. Just so you know this is a 2004 change the original Emperor is in the 1997 version of the Special Edition. Just like Jason Wingreen is also Boba Fett not Temuera Morrison in the 97 edit of Empire.

I don’t believe Lucas ever really had a story for Luke that was interesting in sequels. He had some vague throw away single idea of Luke handing down excalibur to the next generation. But that isn’t a sequel, not really in my opinion if the story isn’t about Luke.

Lucas had used up his original sequel ideas in Return of the Jedi of Luke confronting the Emperor and finding his sister.

There really isn’t anything interesting in terms of conflict and the best Star Wars story was already used in episodes IV, V and VI. The prequels ended up being boring and a backstory that really did not need to be told, and it seems like the sequels never really were even a thing. The story ends on Endor with a happy fairy tale ending.

Lucas could have done something interesting about fathers and sons and generations and had Luke being a teacher and a father, but we all know that wasn’t what he intended. He wanted to make a second prequel trilogy around the time he sold to Disney with his latest idea for the sequels.

They did not want to rehash Star Wars, or Luke would have been physically on Crait and would have let Kylo strike him down so Leia and the rebels could escape the way Obi Wan let Vader cut him down on the death star.

They sort of did it but with Luke as a force projection instead so Rian could say it was original. And so Broom boy got his legend.

And Luke being a cranky old man was a bit like Yoda on Ach-to. I’m surprised no one else noticed the parallels along with that dark cave being like the tree on Dagobah.

Except in Yoda’s case he was testing Luke, in Luke’s case he wasn’t testing Rey he went there to die and meant to burn it all down. The Jedi the hope for the galaxy, burn it all with that tree and the jedi texts. And teach no one.

A fan-made comic book adaptation of Trevorrow &amp; Connolly’s Ep IX: '<strong>Duel of the Fates</strong>'
Time

You know unmade Star Wars as comics isn’t a bad idea. I loved THE STAR WARS.

Lucasfilm should publish something like this at Marvel, but they would have to pay Trevorrow for his script.

They should also do George Lucas sequels as a comic, and Star Wars II by Leigh Brackett.

Hell i’d even read Revenge of the Jedi by George Lucas with Two Death Stars and Had Abbadon, and Jedi returning from death.

I liked Maul’s arc in Rebels, but i agree him surviving death after Phantom Menace makes little sense.

We all now know the reason George brought him back for Clone Wars was because he was supposed to be the big bad of the sequels he was planning.

Which is ridiculous.

Kenobi made short work of him in Episode I, the idea Maul would rival Palpatine is absurd. Or that he would be difficult for Luke to handle in like 3 seconds, without some neophyte Padawan’s help.

The reason there won’t be any more Cavill Superman or Snyder films is one of money.

Cavill’s salary is too much, and Justice League cost 400 million dollars and lost the studio hundreds of millions of dollars.

WB as a film studio are not a charity, not one of Snyder films crossed the billion dollar threshold. And the budgets just kept getting larger and larger.

I’m not even sure sinking an extra 70 million into a failed film was a sound business decision even though i will watch Snyder’s cut. Justice League + Whedon reshoots, + Snyder reshoots is a huge money pit.

Makes you seriously wonder who the producer was, who was in charge of things that they would have allowed things to go so far off the rails. To allow Snyder to almost spend as much as Disney on Stranger Tides.

You could have made man of steel 2 and 3 for what they spent on Justice League.

What are you reading?
Time

Can someone recommend some science fiction or fantasy?

I haven’t read anything new in a couple decades in these genres beyond GRRM.

Once upon a time i used to read every new book my library brought in. Amazingly i was much more busy back then and still found more time to read than i do now.

Its easy to get comfortable and reread stuff you are familiar with. In Lieu of any such recommendations i’ve began re-reading Mary Stewart’s Merlin Trilogy and Le Morte D’Arthur. I never finished the Winchester version and i figure i might as well finish the second half of that. I’ve read the complete Caxton.

Rian was right about the story following a natural beat and rhythm and not catering to fan service.

Last Jedi is far from my favorite Star Wars, but i’m also sick of films being bogged down by catering to ancillary merchandise, toy sales and Happy Meals. The story is the story.

I respect an artist, filmmaker or novelist telling the story they want to tell. Even if it isn’t the way i would have done it, even if Rian’s interpretation of Luke doesn’t fit mine.

I also don’t really accept how JJ saw the characters either. Han, Luke or Leia. They did an okay job for the other characters they created. Making Luke a Mcguffin and not a character to begin with was a bad start for episode 7. And JJ relied way too much on Mystery boxes he made up the answers to later. They tricked us with the map for Skywalker what was Luke searching for. What great mystery of the force was it something to help defeat the sith and the first order, no he wanted to die. It does not make sense 7 and 9 are from a different trilogy than 8, completely different visions sharing only the commonality of characters.

Either JJ should have written and directed all 3 or Rian should have.

The Definitive Theatrical Audio Mix?
Time

There are more mixes for Star Wars than any other film in the Saga if you include the 4 Special Edition edits and all the revisions through the years in video releases. I’ve honestly lost count.

Is there a definitive mix?

What mix do you fancy is the real question.

I was most familiar with the 85 mix because pre 1993 that was the one on most versions on tv and video after 1985.

I used to say the 35mm was my favorite but it is quite limited i watched the 4K77 edition with it.

The best the film has ever sounded imho is the 1997 SDDS mix. for the Special Edition. I’ve never had the opportunity to see the 6 track mag 70mm print from 77 i wasn’t even born yet.

I think Star Wars is the best by a hair, Empire is better in a lot of ways just not as fun. Return is the weakest and uneven but still has its moments.

To me all three films, i mean the real versions are one piece. They tell a complete story i find it hard to consider them separately. Although i know Leia was never intended to be the sister, or Vader Luke’s father. The story of the original film when viewed as a standalone thing is very different from what came later. Star Wars itself not the SAGA is a different beast. A simple happy go lucky comic book movie, not some grand Epic.
A movie serial like Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon. Tells a simple story and is self contained.

Best battle of the Original Trilogy?
Time

The original approach to the Death Star with the X-wings and Red Squadron’s run on the trench in Star Wars. That is my favorite.

The best in terms of number of shots and the difficulty in achieving them technically is the Battle of Endor and the final epic space battle. Then the Battle of Hoth and how painstaking the work was to hand animate the stop motion AT-AT Walkers.

Prediction for Star Wars X, XI, and XII
Time

I don’t think they should or would change the canon. It would be much more easy two have 2 different canons if the old EU was continued in a different adjacent timeline. The could even adapt some of the comics, and novels into animation under the Legends imprint.

Would the original cuts of the OT also count as Legends? Since the Maclunky edit is the official canon along with Han shooting second.

Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in the Star Wars Movies
Time

Mark Hamill as Luke. I’m split between whether his best performance was in Return of the Jedi, or Last Jedi.

I also liked Qui Gon played by Liam Neeson, i think he brought a humanity to Phantom Menace. I like Ewan Obi Wan as well in all 3 prequels.

I like Daisy as Rey. She had that same kind of youthful effervescent giddiness that Mark had in A New Hope, or as i call it Star Wars. I like that Rey, despite her humble origins she chooses to be good, and has a good heart.
