All Things Star Trek
Time

I’m hoping that Strange New Worlds is good, as well as the 4th Kelvin film. I haven’t given up on Disco yet but its had 4 seasons to become Star Trek and it hasn’t i’m also hoping season 3 of Picard is finally respectful of the legacy.

Maybe someday they’ll publish Lucas Star Wars sequel ideas in a book, novelize them or make a graphic novel about them. I’d really dig them doing something like The Star Wars graphic novel not just for the Lucas sequels. But for Duel of the Fates and for Leigh Brackett’s Star Wars II.

I saw it again myself. Worse on a second viewing, unlike Nolan’s films its completely uncinematic. Very little happens. Batman has no agency whatsoever. Stuff just happens to him like he is a victim. Maybe it could be improved on in a sequel since this was like a prequel before he became The Batman we know, but i’m not sure i would be on board. As in someone who would purchase a ticket.

What do you think of the Sequel Trilogy? - a general discussion thread
Time

Was he trolling when he had Vader yell NOOOOOOOOO! in Return of the Jedi, because Lucas knew fans hated it in Revenge of the Sith? Like when he said Empire Strikes Back was the worst film because he knew fans would read that and flip.

Replacing Shaw with Hayden his whole explanation for it didn’t make sense but i don’t think at the time he did that to anger OT fans. But the 2011 Blu Ray change might be trolling. Still not gaslighting like the things he says about the Greedo scene or having this one big script thing in 74 when there was barely one movie. Or the Oxymoron thing about not being able to give us the originals.

I think he made why he sold Lucasfilm pretty plain actually, he wanted to raise his daughter, retire. Enjoy his retirement, time with his wife. Wanted to open a museum. His age was the thing he kept talking about. He wasn’t going to spend his last ten years on Star Wars. He didn’t need the money. It did appeal to his vanity for all of five minutes that he might come back and do it all again and direct episode 7, but ultimately he decided against it.

Fans wanted sequels to episodes IV, VI and VI, and for him to relent on the originals. Lucas gave neither. He gave them prequel movies they didn’t want. Maybe Lucas figured they won’t like my sequels either, because he wanted to make sequels to the prequels instead of sequels.

What do you HATE about the EU?
Time

Mara and Anakin weren’t resurrected though. Jacen didn’t even become a force ghost, he was lost forever.

But i do remember people saying if Denning was allowed to do it he would have had Luke cutting star destroyers in half with his lightsaber, lol.

Resurrection is a Sith power. They don’t respect life. Jedi respect the balance and that includes letting people pass on to join the force. At least that was well done in the prequels, one of the few things Lucas did well. The contrast between Yoda’s philosophy and Palpatine’s.

Its also one of the things i think Veitch got wrong for Dark Empire. Luke thought he could use the dark side to save his friends and remake the galaxy the way he wanted it to be. That is totally Anakin Skywalker, but not Luke. He would have ended up losing his friends, if not having to kill them and he would have ended up another Palpatine.

At least at the end of that story Leia pulls him out of this delusion.

Would it not be amazing if we got a Darth Vader movie directed by Christopher Nolan?
Time

Lucasfilm could have done a Darth Vader series, but they are interested in bringing cartoons to live action with all the inherent sillyness of helicopter lightsabers, and inquisitors. They would probably mess it up. Never wanted the cartoons to merge with the live action any more than the EU to be directly adapted. Different mediums.

What are your opinions on DVNR?
Time

probably somewhere between a 7 and 10. But it depends on the movie and the quality of the elements. Some need managed grain removal that is carefully done and not just hitting a button on the entire movie.

I’d prefer none. But you get cases where the grain level is unacceptable. Like if you don’t have the original negative and you end up with duplication grain. Some films with lots of age, speckles, splices and dirt need some repairs.

But you also have films where they had access to the original first generation elements and just DVNR for the hell of it like the new edition of Star Trek the motion picture, that actually kind of pissed me off. Why go back to the 65mm neg and vistavision masters just to do that. Its ridiculous.

I disagree on one hand Threepio being built by Anakin stretches canon to its breaking point. On the other its funny that Anakin become Vader more machine than man and Threepio is very human like, a robot he built. Just like even though it breaks canon Vader being born at the same time Padme dies is a very powerful visual. Its like Lucas was being too clever.

But i don’t buy the poetry it rhymes stuff. Or whatever some fan created online to describe the movies. There is visual symmetry and continuity, almost accidentally at times due to Lucas recycling ideas. But the most interesting aspect to me would have been Luke and Anakin having similar journey’s that ended up in a different place. Lucas failed in executing that. Anakin’s turn and his friendship with Obi-Wan are completely bungled, rushed or skipped over. The Opera scene was interesting, that is a seduction to power and evil. But the whole join the dark side to save Padme doesn’t work. Not sure what other answer to Anakin’s turn Lucas could have done. But it should have been like what was described in the OT, and the Return of the Jedi novelization.

i saw The Batman for free on HBO saving myself 30 dollars. It was a mixed bag. I didn’t love it and i didn’t hate it. Its still down near the very bottom of Batman films i’ve seen. No its not as bad as Batman and Robin. But the obsession with realism and uber darkness didn’t make it very fun either. Its not something i’m likely to watch again.

I liked Catwoman, but she was barely in it. Also the theme or lack thereof, worst Batman theme ever. Dun, Dun, Dun isn’t a theme.

Sifo was supposed to original be Sidious. Just like Palpatine originally was going to be Anakin’s father who created him with Midi-Chlorians. Sometimes it is better to either drop one of these ideas or to imply it.

Seeing how Disney basically did what George originally envisioned for Anakin with Rey, its not like these ideas go away forever.

I have more fond memories of listening to the John Williams score of Phantom Menace, reading the Terry Brooks novelization, and watching and listening to the Saga begins by Weird Al, and the official Star Wars music video for Duel of the Fates, as well as playing the Playstation game than i do the film itself.

I went to see the janky uneven quality movie with my little brother and that memory means more to me than the movie does.

All George needed to do was release the originals. But he is a stubborn man and he didn’t want to release them, the more fans complained the more intractable he became and he doubled down. He made ridiculous statements about oxymoron and pipelines. When even Vanilla Ice in Cool as Ice is available in HD. There is no reason why all of the Lucas films aren’t available in a modern HD format.

I think at least half the vitriol is fans having the original erased, history rewritten and being gaslighted.

But i can’t defend the fans that attacked Ahmed Best or Jake Lloyd, or the people who harassed Katie Lucas online. Anymore than i can defend people who went after the actors in the Disney films for disliking a movie. But i don’t think being critical of the prequels suddenly lumps commenters on this site with those bad actors.

I’d like to discuss the movies and not people’s motives for not liking them, as a personal judgement on that person as a human being.

There are things i like visually about the prequels. I think the story needed to be reworked. Other than places where the cgi didn’t work, was done in a rushed manner or to keep costs down, i don’t think the movies are all that different than the type of movies that came out around the same times in terms of computer graphics. I do think Lucas became the technologist and more enamored with the technology than the story and the people in those stories.

As for George now, i respect he walked away to be a father to his daughter. Giving it all up must have been difficult. He spent like 40 years of his life on Star Wars. Being a writer, or director or creative, its like breathing for them. But he is free to do other things than to be Mr Star Wars. It is sad in a way that it robbed the world of other films he could have made. That aren’t Star Wars or Indiana Jones. I think Francis Coppola is correct in his assessment of George being uniquely talented. Though i’m not sure i’d trade Star Wars for Lucas version of Apocalypse Now, as much as i’d like to see it.

Unpopular Opinion Thread
Time

I’d like a Kotor remaster more than a remake. Something like Mass Effect Legendary edition

Edit:

I’m not here to be critical of Mr Lucas, but i don’t like that Charley Lippincott, Marcia Lucas and Gary Kurtz contributions to Star Wars were all diminished, if not outright erased. Or how David Prowse was horribly treated.

Maybe not unpopular opinions here but that is my ten cents.
