Prequel Nostalgia
Time

The prequels deserve more respect for the professionals who worked on them. Even if the story in the films and acting isn’t that good. ILM, John Williams. The people who did the visual designs from the art department, to the set builders and others. The editors, sound design. They deserved to have making of books on the same level of quality as the original trilogy. I would have liked to have read about how the Young Indiana Jones crew made the transition to doing a big show like the Star Wars prequels.

Added Star Trek II-IX first issue DVD bundled in with directors Cut 2 Disc of TMP. No reused dirty used DVDs, no bootleg cases. Also just ordered Nemesis first issue widescreen DVD to complete the set.

Its too bad TMP theatrical never had an original DVD release and i have to rely on the Laserdisc or VHS for original stereo audio. But i do remember it was Robert Wise who held back the release because he wanted his version to be the only one available. Its also strange the Special Longer version could get a 4K release with original audio but not the theatrical. Which is 7.1 no 2.0 mix.

The Hobbit trilogy was one of the most disappointing film trilogies ever. I think Martin Freeman was a great choice for Bilbo but the overreliance on greenscreen and cgi and not shooting on film, rushed production destroyed those movies. I sort of grudgingly enjoy the first two the third was a disaster. They are up there with the Star Wars prequels and sequels as depressingly disappointing when they could have been amazing.

Added My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke Laserdiscs. All Japan releases.

Star Trek III first Issue DVD.
Star Trek IV first issue DVD.
Star Trek VI first issue DVD. Collecting these for the original audio though its less than 200 Kbps.

Star Trek II First Issue DVD this is the DVD 5 not the DVD 9 reissue that came out a year later i still need that one.
Star Trek V First Issue DVD

I’m pissed that Amazon sold me apparently rewrapped used DVD’s as new. Star Trek VI and IV were in non factory cases and missing the security sticker. The discs look like official discs though. Third party seller fulfilled by Amazon. To charge retail for used DVD’s is scummy.

I really don’t have nostalgia for them. I do have a soft spot for Phantom Menace. I enjoyed the laserdisc preservation and 35mm preservation. But i watched them once. I also watched the official 2020 versions of the prequel trilogy once. And filed them away. Menace and Revenge are decent sci fi movies, they aren’t even great or good Star Wars films. Attack of the Clones was easily the worst Star Wars ever until Rise of Skywalker.

The prequel era is great. Only for the stuff outside the films like novels, comics and video games. Animated shows. Most of that stuff Disney has said isn’t canon. The sole exception being Filoni Clone Wars.

The People Who Helped George Lucas shape the saga
Time

To me the illustrators and effects artists/ model makers/ creature effects artists are legends. So many talented folks starting with Colin Cantwell and Ralph Mcquarrie. To Joe Johnston. Dennis Muren. John Dykstra. Phil Tippett. Ken Ralston. Richard Edlund. Lucas hired the best people. And what the OT people did was truly magically and special.

If you had to make at least one SE change
Time

In fact the only problem i have with Star Wars is the cardboard cutout scene in the Throne Room, the Speeder shot. And the lack of a definitive multi track mix with all the added changes from the mono mix. And the misaligned rotoscope on lightsabers. The Garbage Mattes. I’d remove or fix those. But not have Greedo shoot at all. I’d leave all the grain that was on the negative intact, not adding or removing anything. Not trying to make it into a new movie for today. I’d eschew almost all cgi.

how did you react to the Yoda Reveal?
Time

I remember being convinced that the little Muppet was the Jedi Master because i was familiar with fairy tales. Luke was being tested. It was far too obvious. Lucas is many things but subtle isn’t one of them. But still it was clever and Frank Oz did it so masterfully you almost believe he is a real living breathing being. Mark Hamill is a good part of that as well though, because if he didn’t sell it in his performance it would have fallen all apart. With one of the very best scores every written for film, and one of Williams finest achievements.

I enjoyed season 1 of Picard except for the unoriginal Mass Effect plot, and him dying and becoming a robot. Season 2 on the other hand is really bad fanfiction. I have no idea how they thought this was a good story or worth 10 episodes to tell. The only good is the actresses ability to overcome the bad plot they’ve been given. And the female roles all shine and are wonderful. But Picard is a jumbled mess and basically unrecognizable. And its the furthest thing from Star Trek, that is why i call it fanfiction its decent as any other show but it isn’t Star Trek.

One thing you wish were still canon
Time

You mean like adventure stories in the Star Wars universe. Because Daley’s Han Solo almost had the flavor of Indiana Jones, pulp comics or film serials. And the novels while a trilogy are loosely connected one offs.

Or the sillier side of the original Marvel like Jaxxon, and the 8 for aduba-3. I kind of enjoy that and the Lumiya comics that came after ROTJ, except for the hiromi.

Moonfall. Plot made no sense. Conspiracy Theory Nonsense. Effects were nothing spectacular. I’ve liked some of Emmerich’s dumb movies but this one was wide off the mark, it wasn’t that entertaining either.

Halle Berry was likable as the astronaut/ acting NASA boss, but even she couldn’t save this piece of crap.

Re-evaluating Revenge of the Sith
Time

Its not a great movie but it works in places. The cgi cartoon stuff is really bad though. And the lightsaber duel is inexcusably of poor quality. I think the Palpatine and Anakin scenes work well, the problem is Anakin’s motivation for doing all these really bad things makes no sense, if we are to believe he is this good person and then 5 minutes later he is killing younglings. I wanted a slow seduction to evil. Learn the darkside to save Padme from dying just doesn’t work for me. Especially when by choking her he probably killed her, Anakin most likely was responsible for her death. It makes no sense.

I didn’t like the Gatsby remake. But then again the original has nothing on the novel, even if it has Redford.

I haven’t seen Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet in so long i forget it beyond Leo being in it.

I never finished Moulin Rouge and i like Kidman and McGregor. It was just so bizarre and the opening was too confusing.

Is 4k worth the upgrade???
Time

Gemini Man was shot digitally. There never was any film grain to begin with. It always looked fake. It looks flat because it was shot on the Arri Alexa. Its a not a movie filmed on movie film and released in 4K, its not a good comparison.
It looks clean because that is the style the director was going for. Almost dreamlike. With Will Smith versus his cgi double, De-aged. For me the story worked, i really liked the movie, but zero verisimilitude because of the way it was shot. Also being shot at high frame rate might have killed it like the Hobbit making it look like video.
