Ideas and Suggestions for :Star Trek The Motion Picture (True Fan Edit)
Time

More prologue thoughts...

Maybe a classical piece of music would work since a big screen version of the TOS theme aside from the 2009 version doesn't really exist. "Jupiter" by Gustav Holst might work if you use the right bits from it.

While 'Jupiter' is indeed a terrific piece SilverWook, there is a fantastic 'TOS' theme variation out there that I've always loved.  I'm a huge music fan in general, and that includes soundtrack scores too.  I have it somewhere around, and I'll get back about the title of the CD album I have.  It's been on one or two other compilations too I believe, and it's over 3 mins worth of full-blown perfection by the great John Williams himself (and his Boston Pops orchestra).

It's just called 'Star Trek Theme' if I recall, and it's a variation on the Alexander Courage music.  It builds into it's own thing though, and is a neat version.

(By the way doubleofive, I got a hold of that 'Best of Meco' compilation some time back, too, lol!  A blast from the past, that.)

While I'm personally very happy with the grandeur of the existing 'Star Trek The Motion Picture:Director's cut' exactly as it is (barring some print quality issues of course), I'm also very interested to see what you eventually come up with on this one FanFiltration.

Having caught up with everything on this thread recently, as far as a potential TOS 'Prologue' intro. possibility, I've been mulling over a short variation of my own in the last couple of days to put up here just for fun.

I'll get round to it when I can, and had been intending to mention I'd have theoretically had John Williams version to accompany it, before we eventually go on to hear Jerry Goldsmith's theme begin....

Actually that shot of Yoda was originally taken from where he climbs up on the mound to raise the X-wing but they placed it there instead and flipped the shot and caused the continuity error where he is suddenly in a different place.  I've reinstated the shot where it should have been and re-flipped it. I haven't figured out what i will be putting in its place though

Thanks for confirming this will be re-'flipped'.  :)

I'd noticed that the background matched the ones in the 'close-ups' of Yoda lifting the X-Wing a little later on, but I hadn't reckoned on you actually moving this shot altogether.

Interesting, but does this mean you're removing a shot from later on now, to include this?

David Little - nice first post there, and welcome aboard.

Rogue Leader - the gun props are looking very good, especially once the orange tip is blackened.  If it turns out you can't get a 'shotgun' part (or want to keep costs down), perhaps a little piece of round black plastic plumbing 'piping' can be cut to an approximate length and attached to the gun instead?  It would give an approximate look, and the ends could just be smoothed off with 'filler' of some sort.  Just a thought.  Nice work so far.

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

Haven't been able to be around for the last few weeks, but have just got up to speed again, and wanted to say that your latest 'Cloud City approach' preview shot is looking awesome so far Adywan!  Terrific work as always, and I'll look forward to the finished version eventually.

Anyway, in addition to the various existing 'HOTH' flipped shots that I covered in this post at the New Year - http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/STAR-WARS-EP-V-REVISITED-EDITION-ADYWAN-NEW-TRAILER-AVAILABLE-NOW/post/390469/#TopicPost390469 , I thought I'd show the 'DAGOBAH' flipped shot now, prompted by this recent comparison of Yoda by vaderios.

Although there were a few comments on how different the 'prequel' design looks compared to the 'original', no-one mentioned that the CGI Yoda head is 'reversed' the wrong way round in this mock-up here....  Thing is, Yoda's ears are very different to each other, with his right ear being somewhat 'straight', while his left ear is distinctly 'curved'.

Because the 'prequel' head seems to be the the wrong way round in this example, the differences are exaggerated even more than they should be I reckon -

....another noticeable non-symmetrical feature is the large 'spot' clearly seen on the left of Yoda's brow here -

....okay then, here's the shot of Yoda that is 'flipped'....it seems to just be this one, and it's where he gets up after falling during Luke's training....  (note the shape of the ears and garments in comparison with before and after shots of Yoda in the movie)

....I've included the shots of Luke to put it in context...but I'd personally prefer for this Yoda shot to be re-'flipped' too, as it will still seem that he is somewhere to the side of where Luke is glancing....  We soon get used to re-'flipped' shots anyway.

I'll be covering a lot more to do with certain 'Dagobah' stuff when I get the chance.

Several other pages of posts in the way is indeed a problem, lol.

Rather than starting a similar thread though, perhaps you can draft up your latest additional stuff seperately....and post it immediately after reposting your original info., which you could just 'reply with quote' from your original post.

Just an alternative to consider.

By the way, my 'limited' posts also involved a heap of links too, as my word count was certainly nowhere near the 64000 character limit.

I've come up against this forum 'limitation' recently myself when I went to 'preview'/'save' something I'm currently drafting up.

I ended up having to delete some of the sentences in my lengthy draft until it went below the maximum 64000 characters limitation, and then saved that....before just continuing to draft up a second post to incorporate what I'd deleted in the first one.

When I'm ready, I'll just have to post one after the other, it seems.

Unless Jay suggests otherwise, you may have to do the same Frink.

Your reveal shot was one of my favorite shots in the trailer..... please don't cut it.

Couldn't you keep the shot and then have the falcon fly to the other side and turn around coming in from the other angle? YOu do have a falcon model...

Just a thought...

The trailer 'reveal' shot will still be around Matticon, it's the later shot of the 'distant' City 'reveal' that is going to be altered....to remove the (secondary) 'sun' that is seen on the left of the frame during it.

Unfortunately that reveal shot is going. The sun is behind the city whereas in every other shot the sun is facing the city (as has been discussed before) and you can see from the new close-up city matte as the falcon approaches the sun will be facing the city. So this shot has to go as it stands now. Even though i have always loved that shot myself it just doesn't work within the edit now but i will be replacing it with a new reveal shot which will still have the city in the distance

The window will be seen in all shots that it was missing in the SE

Good to see you back Adywan, and thanks for the confirmation.

I'm sorry to see that the 'sunrise' in the small, distant Cloud City reveal is going....even though I agree with the point about the 'lighting' issues.

In this particular case, I guess I was happy to overlook the 'continuity' problem of this 'twin sun' system shot, due to the atmospheric beauty of the it.  Still, 'continuity' counts for a lot where possible, and I know your final shot will turn out great regardless.

....and the additional background 'elevator' windows are going to look terrific I'm sure!  :)

Nope! On that side it's just a wide bay with doors closed.

True that, vaderios -

My team is a lil over a dozen people... Along with my Rogues, we have other friends/powerful allies who will be instrumental in pulling this off. Costume designers, prop makers, film makers, photographers, etc etc etc... So rest assured we're not approaching this half-@ssed... lol. No, we do not have the backing of the 501st or Rebel Legion. However, we do have a few real Rebels within those groups who are willing to help me directly. I resigned from the RL last year so they have no jurisdiction over me or my squadron. =P

Welcome aboard Ming, and thanks for the interesting update on what you and your buddies are involved in with the 'Secondary Unit' stuff.

So you're the one who took the 'Rogue Leader' tag here when I tried to register as that originally, lol.  It seems that you're the perfect member to have it though, judging by your credentials!  :)

So just to wish you all good luck in your mission, and it sure is neat to know that some of you could end up in as many as six shots, which is more than I expected.  I have a feeling that Adywan's whole AT-AT battle is going to be a real showpiece for his work by the time this is all done....

Nope.  I don't think it was me vaderios, as I remember Ady mentioning that he was actually planning to keep the 'elevator' window look.  Sounds great if he can manage that.  However, there's another, totally different 'open' SE window that has been restored to it's former, original look to resolve a 'continuity' problem.  (there's a comparison shot of it amongst Adywan's preview shots on page 1 of this thread)

But I liked your mock-up of this one too.  :)

Well done thunderclap!

I'm looking forward to seeing how some of your ideas have worked out on this version....and I can already tell that I'm going to enjoy your version much more than the original....  :)

(Which reminds me, I must get around to cobbling together my own preferred 'ending' here sometime, since doubleofive supplied me with all the screenshots I required, a while ago....)

Glad to see it seems to be in 5.1 audio. and that you made the effort to colour-correct things a little....but can you confirm if there'll be a PAL release of this too, or not?  Thanks.

Looks very cool... although I've always liked the fact Cloud City looked a dot in the distance. It's reminiscent of the Death Star in the distance as the Millenium Falcon approaches in A New Hope... "he's heading for that small moon!"... it's this small object in the distance that you only get a sense of the massive scale and detail of once you get up close... and boy does Cloud City do that!

That was a nice 'Bespin' shot vaderios, but I must agree with Vincent's comment here.  The original 'sunlit' reveal of the small, distant 'Cloud City' was always one of my favourite establishing 'beauty' shots in the movie, I have to say.

I just wonder if and how Adywan will tweak it in any way....

And I agree with the way doubleofive recently described how he always saw the Falcon's arrival as being at 'sunset'....with the events of Leia pacing in the apartment coming during the next day, and everything else taking place up until the Falcon blasted off in the evening....  Interesting that Adywan saw the 'Falcon' as arriving at a 'sunrise', and all the following events taking place on the same day up until the evening....

It will all still look glorious I'm sure.

By the way, thinking about you and your family today Ady.

The ANH:SE Redux Ideas thread (Radical Ideas Welcome).
Time

I remember commenting somewhere ages ago that I really wish Adywan had gone ahead and included the destruction of 'Jar Jar' in his edit, lol.

However, I also said at the time that I liked the overall short 'timing' of the sequence of destruction (and music cue) that we'd been used to over the years....so would have ideally liked to see only the brief shot of 'Jar Jar' and 'Bail Organa' inserted....which would have still kept the 'timing' (and music cue) of the sequence relatively unaffected, while still showing the drama of real Alderaan inhabitants being wiped out.

I've always been happy with the original sequence due to the grave way Ben describes what he feels has just happened, as it always seemed sufficient to 'sell' the events that went unseen....  However, this extra Adywan shot would have been great if inserted I reckon....not merely because I wanted rid of 'Jar Jar'....but because seeing the end of Leia's 'Father'-figure gave an added weight to the scene in light of the Prequels I thought....

Anyway, it turns out that ladyferry actually put up a version a while ago that shows this, which I've just come across!  :)   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4D-gYagJPA

(a request -  Is there anyone out there that is willing and able to cobble together another YouTube clip using Adywan's footage and explosion sometime?....again just inserting the 'Jar Jar' shot immediately after the planet is hit by the laser....except beginning at the point where Tarkin is pressuring Leia to reveal where the Rebel Base is, so we get the full build-up to the explosion....and ending after Ben tells Luke he fears something terrible has happened.  Just to get a better idea of how the whole sequence would look and sound with this single additional shot added.  Thanks)

In the meantime, here's my 2nd-favourite version of this scene....   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt3Sh8Fxv4U

Hi thunderclap, good to see another possible version of this on the go.  While I realise it might be impractical to list all your intended changes, could you perhaps answer these particular questions about your intentions for this sometime?  (unless you don't wish to reveal anything of course)

1.  Are you keeping the original's basic 'chronological order' of sequences, or re-arranging whole sequences/adding additional footage from other sources?

2.  Are you keeping the 'Hotrod Chase' beginning in some way, or starting with an alternative sequence?

3.  Are you keeping the 'Wedding' ending in some way, or finishing with an alternative sequence.

4.  Will this be a PAL or NTSC release?

5.  Will you be doing any colour-correction?

6.  Will the audio be 5.1?

Thanks.

I think this question is ontopic enough, if Ady is back to reading the forum:

Ady- With all the hubbub regarding a 3D conversion of Star Wars on the horizon, will this change your plans for your Revisited work?  I see you included the 3D conversion of the Jabba scene on SWR, so I have to assume you have at least a passing interest in 3D...

How hard do you think it will be to go back and reconform your Revisied changes to the 3D release assuming it happens?

I'm just wondering if I'll have to permanently choose between Revisited and 3D...

It seems that there's some 'psuedo'-3D technology that is already being put into some of the new, upcoming 3D-tvs....which will actually give some kind of 3D effect to 2D sources....

I've no idea how successful the effect is, but I'd sure be interested to see how 'Star Wars:Revisited' looks on them using this stuff.  It will probably be similar to the kind of software technology that TriDef has developed for this Acer laptop, which I've confirmed works with standard dvds too.  Here's some demos -

Can Yoda be added to the shot where Luke falls after standing on his hands on Dagobah? It looks like Yoda is magically transported to a spot out of frame as he falls.

Am I alone on this? :P

To be honest, this seems fine to me.  We see Yoda balanced up high on Luke's foot before we eventually see him seem to fall violently forward/sidewards as Luke begins to lose his balance.  When we cut to Luke continuing to fall to the ground, it's quite a 'close-up' vew of the area to the front/sides of him, and it seems Yoda could easily have ended up a little further away, out of shot, considering the forward/sidewards momentum he seemed to have, from the height he was at the time.

Perhaps Adywan could show something like the 'blurred' hint of Yoda's robes/foot going off-screen at some point during Luke's fall to the ground, but I reckon it still works without it, if not.

Something ive noticed navigating through the menus.

Vader in the menus is taller and his stance is more straight.

Plus there is a better definition of forms and detail between the stair section.

Who is the more aggressive?

Okay, since you're asking, I'd have to say I definately prefer the existing Vader stance at the top here, rather than the one in the 'menu' version below.

And as well as the subtly-different stance, I also prefer the existing 'composition' as it is too....where Vader is positioned further back on the right of the shot.  I also prefer the look and angles of the set details in the existing shot too, and the whole layout of this reveal just looks superior to me I have to say.

While some of the 'menu' elements are neat, this fast-zooming animated one is very different from the great build-up seen in the existing static shots in this scene.
