It’s definitely very good (I asked Cap to send me his original audio so that I can mix it into a new version I’m working on), but there’s still some noticeable audio distortion happening on the seam between “am” and “a”. Maybe I’m just hyper-aware when it comes to this line, but it’s definitely there. It almost sounds…I dunno, a little “Donald Duck”-y for a split second?

That said, it’s still very impressive work. I know first-hand how much of a nightmare this line is - the tone of voice, the speed of delivery, the mushiness of the phonemes… none of it lends itself well to editing. I’m hoping that combining both of our clips will make the line just about perfect.

It’s great, absolutely incredible work, but I agree. It’s not 10000% yet; I hear the augmented sounding distortion to it. I’m excited to see what this combination can accomplish.

My last 6 Trolls ended up being autistic. We’ve since come to a better understanding.

It was a valid question based on his inability to pick up on social cues and relentlessness. There is nothing wrong with autism or any disablilty comes to that but its helpful to understand someone’s point of view if that were the case.

I signed up to this site to avoid negativity but it’s all I’m seeing these days. I’ll leave him as your problem from now on.

Good luck with the project.

In other news, I’ve been playing with a new reading of the word “end” for the Leia training. I’m at the point now where I need a clean set of ears to listen to it. Let me know how it sounds, and if you think this version works any better than the other!

Old version (Version A): https://streamable.com/y02l42
New Version (Version B): https://streamable.com/6dn00m

I still think this is the best version.

https://streamable.com/ehphfh

Great work either way.

Where did this one come from?! I can’t believe I skipped over it?

The way it’s been edited together, it sounds like he’s got a lisp or something between the cuts… but that is surely better and more natural sounding? Compared to the other ones that sound a little bit more jarring.

I still think “New Version (Version B): https://streamable.com/6dn00mcould be the best one if it can be smoothed out a bit more. The inflection in that sounds a bit better for the sentence imo.

Version B sounds the most passable for me. Was iffy on previous versions, but version B seems to be about as good as it’s gonna get here. The audio doesn’t awkwardly jolt as much this time. It now sounds like he’s mid-sentence shifting his tone to be a bit more stoic. With this version, only now is the edit unnoticeable for new viewers, imo. When before, I feel like it was still noticeable, honestly.

Hey, so I know there’s been a couple of ideas about using Voice AI replication software to get new lines out of people such as Kylo Ren or Luke.

Anyways, I just finished watching the new episode of Disney Gallery about the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian and they talked about how they used this software called ReSpeecher to replicate Mark Hamill’s voice from back in the day for his new lines. Granted, they had raw audio files from the films to use. But, I think with stuff like the Lego Force Awakens game, we could get some good stuff for Kylo Ren at least.

Has anyone looked into possibly using this? I know on the website (here: https://www.respeecher.com/?hsLang=en) it says something about scheduling a demo or whatever. I’m not sure what kind of price it has but has anyone thought about maybe biting the bullet and looking into it?

I think Skywalker Sound used some modern voice manipulation technology to have the late, great Alec Guinness speak Rey’s name. I wonder if we could try and replicate this method for a few potential new lines of dialogue? 🤔

I believe for Alec Guinness, they took “Don’t be afraid” from his quote while talking to R2-D2. The inflection is identical, and this was long before work on The Mandalorian.

“Did you really analyze every last sentence in all of these books? I don’t believe you.” (Luke is right for being disillusioned, the way things used to be when they worshipped these specific ideals and ways to run things ended up in disaster; they aren’t necessary.) “The Force is not something to study, it’s something to feel and go with the flow on.” is kind of what I got from what Yoda said.

kinda getting repetitive now, but yeah lol.

Kylo’s altered dialogue to “You were right.” definitely helped in terms of continuity and logic, but though it’s close enough to pass for Kylo’s voice on its own, next to his real masked voice it’s pretty clear that it sounds different; the accent doesn’t quite match, and it feels more flat. Are there any plans to retouch this line for future versions?

Nice review here! I made a mock-up of what is, in my opinion, a more organic line in this scene a while back. I’m glad to hear that even for a first-time viewer this line sounds off. Here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcsLeRB5Uyk

The original line was completely contradictory with TLJ, so it makes sense to replace it, but at least this line removes that contradiction and replaces it with something basic that doesn’t sound out of place. Plus, it makes it clearer where the visions are coming from. Kylo says he sees her parents, then he tells her to see them as well. Cue the first vision.

I like this sooo much better than how “you were right” sounds currently. Sounds more natural contextually and sonically. Was this turned down earlier for Ascendant? Is it Adam Driver’s voice, as well?

Also, DrVibble, really enjoyed reading your reviews. Agree with your review for Ascendant a ton, the changes gave me so many feels I was seeking from this movie, lol. Also relate with your complaints as well, but there is a V2 coming after all!

Paragraph 1 - Resistance
Paragraph 2 - First Order
Paragraph 3 - Meanwhile, First Order

I see what the thought is, but this structure is kiiiiinda awkward. And definitely inferior to what it is in v1 either way. Could do some slight tweaking on the specific wording in paragraph 3 in v1 to make it clearer (meh, unnecessary) but other than that, pointless to change from our original, imo.

Okay, these are good changes.

We really need to keep Palpatine saying he’s all the Sith, though. The best one out of these edit attempts is the one where we swap the lines and have it flow like: “I am all the Sith! You are nothing, a scavenger girl is no match for the power in me.”

The two tries without the full timing and emphasis of Palpatine’s dialogue makes the zoom in on Rey and her response awkward.

Best of both worlds; keep both of Palpatine’s lines (which I would prefer anyway, this is fighting back and killing ‘all the sith’, somewhat solidifying this time is the end) and rework it in order to fit Rey accepting she’s a Jedi.
But, like Hal said, only if the edit can be 100% perfected. This is maybe one of the most important moments in the film, and has to land perfectly.

Also, I really love “We can stop Palpatine… together.” It works so well in that clip.

I’d say the central theme of the film is fighting alone vs standing together:

Poe thinks the Resistance is alone, that the rest of the galaxy has given up. “They win by making you think you’re alone. Remember? There’s more of us.” It’s no coincidence these words are echoed by Poe while talking about rallying the people: “The First Order wins by making us think we’re alone”, and by Lando once the galaxy does come together: “There are more of us”. This is why the Resistance alone can’t/shouldn’t have the means to defeat or permanently cripple the Final Order. The finale is all about putting their faith in the people, it’s about everyone coming together to fight against evil. The entire galaxy coming together needs to be THE reason they win against the Sith Fleet.

As underused as Finn is, the little we do get is him thinking he was alone in leaving the First Order, only to find there were more defecting stormtroopers, who join him and end up being a major help in the final battle. And Rose is left alone by the movie to hammer this theme home.

Of course this theme is also present in Rey’s struggle, and is one of the few things I think carries over well from the previous films. Rey has always felt alone, all her life she had to fend for herself on Jakku, and her main struggle in TFA and TLJ was her seeking belonging, first with Han, then with Luke, and finally with Kylo (or rather with Ben, as we see in this film). In this movie we see her trying to find belonging in 1- Her friends, and 2- The Jedi, but as we see from the opening, she is not only separated from her friends, but also no one answers as she calls out to the Jedi. She is alone, and even when her friends join, she still feels alone since she feels like they don’t understand her and her troubles: “People keep telling me they know me, I’m afraid no one does”.

I agree with Jar Jar’s read of Rey’s struggle (and I haven’t read the novelisation), Rey pushes her friends away because she’s afraid of herself, not because she doesn’t care about them, quite the opposite. By the time we get to Endor she feels she has failed not only her friends and the Jedi, but even Ben (by striking him down with no hesitation). She’s failed everyone she seeked belonging with, and so she’s now completely alone. Palpatine plays into this by telling her that the belonging she’s been looking for has always been with the Sith, that this is her place as his grandaughter. He goes a step further by suggesting that accepting her place would give her the power to stop the conflict, saving her friends (same thing Kylo refused to do in TLJ). Rey thinks it’s her only choice, until she senses Ben, she realizes she’s not alone and she’s able to “stand thogether” with him, followed by all the Jedi coming to her aid once she reaches out. She embraces Ben, she embraces the Jedi, and she’s finally able to embrace her friends on Ajan Kloss once the struggles are over.

I think this movie is “greatly flawed”, I specially despise it as a sequel to TLJ. However, like I’ve said before, it is what we have to work with, and there is stuff to work with. I agree with Jar Jar that we should focus on improving what we have instead of just removing large chunks out of it otherwise we’ll be left with a whole bunch of nothing.

Good discussion. I lean alongside this comment. This mindset of explaining what we have, and trying to make it work/flesh it out as best as it can. This is at the heart of Hal’s editing perspective with trying to change as little as possible with these edits, I feel. (Although, yes, 9 has had way more changes than 7 and 8, but still).

I like this series of edits because not everything is drastically changed. It could easily be canon. Also, this Rey stuff still makes sense to me and is satisfying enough as is. Especially when she sees Kylo at the very end and passes the lightsaber to him. More tweaking can definitely be made, but I disagree with doing anything major when this story aspect works well enough.

But I have no interest in seeing Hayden in ROTJ. I really like the statement I always inferred from the original version that when Anakin died, he was ‘restored’ rather than ‘reverting’ back to the version of himself that was about turn evil anyway. Redemption, not undoing it.

Yesss 100% agree!!

And hey, actually, to argue against myself, Hayden appearing as his ghost in 9 could make sense with Sebastian Shaw still being the ghost in ROTJ. Since Obi-Wan switches between the voice of Alec and Ewan, who knows how it all works. Their spirits do glitch, I guess lol. Perhaps they can switch appearance at will, and Anakin decided to show up as his Episode 3 self… as a middle finger to The Emperor? And then he’s Shaw in ROTJ, his true older self, because that’s how Luke saw him. And he wanted to be there like that for him and Obi and Yoda. (and he honestly just didn’t want to confuse his poor ol son.)

But either way, in a perfect world I’d like the option for either ghost, so everyone is happy. You can’t erase Sebastian Shaw!! He will still always be at least unmasked Anakin, even in the special editions with his eyebrows gone!!

The shot needs to slow down either way for which ever line is chosen. It’s too much information to process no matter how much the lines are whittled down. If we were to keep the line placement over that shot as is, it would be one of the quickest and most jarring scenes in this movie. And that’s saying A LOT for The Rise Of Skywalker, lol.

Dumb new idea for that scene:

Trooper: “Who’s your operator?” or “Who assigned you here?” or something like that.

C3P0: “Oh, Babu Frik! He’s one of my oldest friends.”

Trooper: “Who’s Babu F-” gets shot

I really like this. Could even keep the same “Then why are you… wha?-” part?

Obvious explanation, but; the Trooper continues with the next part of his same old, same old soldier speech until he realizes he doesn’t know what a Babu Frik is and he’s caught off guard. Then blam. Extra funnies without being too on the nose! We know the Stormtrooper doesn’t know who Babu Frik is, and so he does not have to literally say his name for the beat to be conveyed as funny.

I always took the jar of Snokes/Palp clones as ‘used’ or failed experiments, not new growing organisms. The Jar of Snokes seemed like leftovers from the experiments that resulted in THE Snoke, and likewise the old Palpatine bodies seem like either failed attempts or bodies that were used and ‘exhausted’ by Palpatine’s spirit.

I interpreted it this way too. I like this explanation. It’s why Palpatine is so desperate for at least the energy of a new host all together; the cloning stuff ain’t working.
