The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released)
Time

The only moment Kylo and Luke both perceive differently (and both incorrectly) in the flashbacks is basically who turned their lightsaber on first. With this change of only Kylo killing everyone, his reaction to perceiving Luke there as a crazed lunatic trying to murder him is better warranted, almost. Kylo was terrified and alone; perhaps now all of the propaganda Snoke was feeding him just finally rang true for Ben and he had a massive freakout and killed everyone. I still like that better than some random students leaving, I don’t really see the point of even mentioning that detail. Not just because it doesn’t come back to mean anything later, but because it’s better to showcase Kylo did all this by himself. All because of how he saw Luke, and how turned his heart was. At least that’s how I’m seeing it right now, I could change my mind later, maybe.

I’m really not a fan of the change to Luke’s line but oh well, let the past die, slaughter it if you have to.

Kinda have to agree. I can still hear the w sound after “He’d vanished” so it sounds kinda wonky.

Plus, I kinda liked what the comics did to explain this. From Luke’s devastated perspective he might think those students joined up with him, but in reality they were just trying to avenge Luke.

Ah well, it’s fine.

I just listened to this line myself. I completely agree it definitely does sound too wonky in the edit.

But honestly, I… actually kinda am on board for this line change, lol. Ben now being alone literally and emotionally during this rage slaughter (using that mighty Skywalker blood) causes Luke telling the story to become even more heartbreaking and intense for me watching it just now. I like it. It makes Luke being so horrified in his failure that much more potent. I dunno, I kinda like it.

Were the dozen vanished students implied to be the Knights Of Ren? If so, I guess that is an issue. The explanation of what they are is extremely vague as is in the trilogy, so I dunno, might need this detail intact for them? Honestly don’t personally mind keeping them their own thing that Kylo creates (with the aid of Snoke or whatever) after this slaughter, lol.

It was a side mission thing on Pasaana. I just played through it last night, really liked it. Nice coincidence.

Time-stamped clip of the puppet show (sorry this video keeps skipping through the dialogue):

(Really like how this game handled TLJ too, speaking of it. They really let it be emotional (in a silly Lego way) and didn’t shy away from showing any of the more controversial stuff or changing much. Really impressed.)

Wow I really love that as its own thing. I’m annoyed now, lol. I like the ghosts showing up for the sake of the entire saga’s storyline, but this feels so much more powerful for Rey’s personal journey.

And I kinda like it being in service of Rey, so… uh ohhh… not sure what I prefer. 😳

Should a Jedi’s personal journey be above all else?

My first time looking at this thread, and I’ve now caught up. Really enjoying what’s going on here.

Here’s a mockup of the hangar scene, using a combination of ideas from DominicCobb’s workprint and my previous mockup. I think “you will kill Palpatine” could sound better, but this was quick and dirty, so I just took it from Dom’s workprint as-is.

The “DARK POWER” line in this sounds so insanely natural, I was shocked. I love it. It works well to get this new dark side idea across. He says it with the perfect amount of umph to make the loud music swell and extreme Rey closeup actually work in a truly impactful way (compared to previous attempts on this thread from like over a year ago, imo.) So I really hope this can stay in a “finalized” version of this.

Another thing I should mention is that I have some sort of strange obsession with Palpy’s “Luke Skywalker was saved by his father. The only family you have here… is me…” line.
Because even watching in the theater, I remember thinking about how that line could work in a Rey Nobody version of it. If she’s not related to him in this hypothetical, The Emperor would have been meaning it in an ominous formality type of way. Not literally. (As well as basically meaning not having anyone around to back her up, like Luke did (until Ben comes in to be Rey’s ‘Vader’ almost.) But you get the idea.)

I just really liked this line for that. Something that is so obviously talking about Rey Palpatine in the theatrical, but also could work just as well in a Rey Nobody version. My interest in seeing a Rey Nobody edit realized, lies heavily in how much one can drastically change the story with very minimal alterations. Being able to keep (almost) entire “Rey Palpatine” lines without her being literally related would just be so neat. At least to me, lol.

But hey, I’ll even settle for a happy middle ground. (I can understand why it doesn’t totally make literal sense to have him say that strange sentence in a Rey Nobody cut, lol. And if you’re someone who doesn’t have my weird fascination, then yeah… yeesh.)
Like, for example, I quite like the idea of cutting the line to where it’s simply “Luke Skywalker was saved by his father…The only family you have…” all ominously. (as has been mentioned before on a previous page. I think it works better conceptually than him literally saying “…is here.” But will have to maybe see which one works better in an actual edit.)
And then the camera pans up to look up at her “new family” getting helplessly attacked by the bad guys. That definitely works as well, albeit for a different than what I explained a paragraph or twelve ago. But still a strong (probably even stronger) reason. Especially with The Emperor referring to her friends up there as her new family again later in the scene. Keeping the line mostly intact, while also removing the slightly confusing way he phrased it. That works for me.

Point is; (jeez, as if it’s not clear enough) the more theatrical stuff still in this, the better, to me.

If adding in Palpy clues… keep it as vague as possible. “Rey Nobody” needs to still work even with these new changes and teases. Less of a “this is your heritage/family destiny, you are absolutely blood related to this guy” and more of just a “this is where the journey will lead to.”

The issue is, yeah, her vision scene in 7 is a straight timeline of events. Her vision of the future is one shot of Kylo coming at her in the snow and tall trees, which ends with her immediately knocking back to reality because she gets freaked by him (could work around that, maybe?)

The best way to include a shot of the Emperor’s house (or whatever) would be to just head-canon it and place that shot after the Bespin duel area hallway, and before old Luke placing his hand on R2? (Since that would be the time when Emperor died, and started living at that place trying to make his clones.) Not sure how this would look in an edit. It’s all quite fluid in the regular version of that scene; Rey rolls from Bespin to the Jedi Academy ruins in a single shot. So, not sure.

Hey, all. Really glad to see this finally out. All these finalized changes (that I’ve helped to meticulously complain about in their WIP stages) are so great now. I’ve been following along and enjoying the excitement the past few days. Downloaded the new fixed version of the edit and skimmed through for improvements.

I don’t mean to be such a downer, but I have more complaints!! (yay).

The cave sequence is very very pixelated. (Sorry if it’s been addressed, like if the master source used had to be lower quality or something. One of those recently recovered crackly lightsaber WIPs from Google Drive?) It seems to be the worst looking part of this re-render.

Examples:
https://ibb.co/myJkm2F
https://ibb.co/DYHkZQg

A bit from the Ahch-To moment has more noticeable colour banding in shots like this. In motion, I can see the orange shape from the light of the burning fire warp rapidly as the camera moves. Again, sorry if this is a sort of “necessary evil” to get the new rising sun colour grade to work.

Shot:
https://ibb.co/8Y3kwzH

The heavier use of the new LUT on Exagol is on the cusp of feeling like it’s going to colour-band in a distracting way. It still does do the colour blocking-banding-pixelated-stuff a little tiny bit on the (now green?) clouds on the right of this frame, but it never seems to do it in an overly egregious way. It seems to be the same as the first version, to my eye. It appears to be nearly non-existent while inside The Emperor’s house, so that’s good (and much more important to look right, which this does).
Mix of the film grain and this new heavily used LUT is my guess. Not bad, just has a slightly off haze (imo, compared to the version on Disney+) to it, which has been discussed. I can’t entirely put my finger on it. I agree with what Burbin has said.

Everything else from skimming through looks solid enough.

I mainly tried to smooth over the pickup note between Rey’s Theme and the End Credit fanfare. Oh, and shoutout to bbghost for helping me find the correct music clips!

This new version is a bit cleaner, I think.
