If George Had Made The Sequel Trilogy...
Time

Im sure the development of Lucas sequal story and characters would first revolve around his typical master plan of merchandising. The writing and execution would again, be a hack job of some sort, possibly referencing more flash gordon serials, involve massive procrastination up to the minute of filming and thus suck salty donkey biscuits! In his post film interviews Lucas would again deflect any criticism and defend his right to do the film his way, tell fans to grow up and justify mcguffins, while scarfing a big-mac and wiping special sauce off his beard.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Ive seen TFA twice and I loved it more the 2nd time around! Here’s my take. I agree about the ANH/ROTJ flavor this film has, but I loved the way it was executed, creating all sorts of mystery, intrigue and plenty of exciting questions to be answered, PLUS X-WINGS, I LOOOOOVE X-Wings! Concerning the Rey/Ren conflict, IMO Ren was physically handicapped by Chewy’s BFG shot to the lower gut and also Finn got in a lick during their brief duel. I thought Ren did pretty good against Rey considering those injuries and the profuse blood loss. Snoke also mentioned Ren never encountered a challenge as great as going up against Solo and TR. Rey’s FULL awakening occurred when Ren/Rey have their swords crossed with Ren bearing down and starting to physically overpower Rey. After closing her eyes she heeds maz’s advice and makes herself a full ally with the force and to the light side. I dont think rey wouldve been able to defend against an unwounded, full powered Ren. IMO the injuries/blood loss and fatigue weakened the dark side and cost Ren that battle. Poe Dameron is a Stud and a half! Seeing the x-wing fleet in action nearly brought tears to my eyes and a huge lump in my throat! Seeing Han die the way did under the circumstances made me gasp the 1st viewing! i cant remember that last time i did that in a theater and was so drawn into a story! During the 2nd viewing I could feel the fatherly pain in Hans eyes when he sees Ren, talks about him to Leia and final confrontation. I could feel the love he has for his son and the desperate sincerity in his words when trying to lure Ren back. When I saw the impalement again, I needed a napkin to wipe my eyes. The Starkiller/DS3 plot may not be original but it gets the ball rolling. I look forward to watching TFA many more times, and cant wait for questions answered and mysteries unraveled in further episodes!

Episode VII Cast List Announced
Time

Elated to see the cast!  soooo glad to see von sydow!  Im predicting villain status for him.  Serkis is great as well. Gleeson is an exciting up and coming actor, i remember his small role in HP deathly hallows, and he seems to improve with each film.  Dont know much about the other young actors.  I just hope they know WHAT they've been cast for and are very familiar with the classic OT universe!  I too would love to see wedge as well!  Getting excited!Lets hope there's no squandering of talents here unlike the PT.  I recall being excited hearing that Terrance"talk to the wood beam" Stamp was cast for TPM, then Lucas boogered up his screen time.  Stamp was wise to make TPM his 1st and last appearance.

How would you have handled Episode VI (6)?
Time

Knowing that there would be a sequal trilogy my ideas for Ep6 would entail having the rebellion liberate several star systems to gain tactical and resourceful advantage against the Empire

dont kill boba fett. The addition of more fett's would be cool and they would operate similarly to a spec ops unit. they mow their way through the opposition on tatooine and escape to fight another day.

Have Luke fight with 2 sabers(since he's the last of the jedi at the start and facing insurmountable odds), while freeing Han and fighting alongside Leia and Lando/chewy.  More Force usage by Luke to win battles

No sibling relationship b/ Luke/Leia.  Han/Leia already established a romance and Luke is devoted to the jedi way.

Yoda does NOT die and furthers Luke's education and re-emerges from exile to help lead rebellion and aid in search of jedi hopefuls.

No ewoks or wookies in climactic battle(space battle with ground assault) which involves the liberation of a peaceful alderaan-like planet from imperial bondage, leading to the discovery of force-sensitive jedi hopefuls by Luke and in turn brought before Yoda.

An intro to sith temples and the dark side way.

this way, the next trilogy could focus on bringing the new jedi into the war, the liberation of more planets building up to a final battle in ep 9.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

Im betting on Ford having action scenes in VII.  Maybe he'll go back to the smugglers' life?  Maybe Solo and Leia arent together with him smuggling again and she with a new life in the jedi order alongside Luke.  I dont envision scenes of Solo clad in a heavy sweater, sitting by some fireplace doing a crossword puzzle while Leia knits a quilt.

Has everyone forgotten that Yoda clearly stated in ROTJ that Luke was the last of the Jedi? I figured that if he was able to sense Luke on Tatooine and watch him, he would easily have been able to locate any other Jedi who managed to survive the purge. If another Jedi did survive, that makes two Jedi who lied to Luke's face.

good point!  I also dont wanna see anything PT or CW related.  As far as im concerned, the ST is a clean slate with a blank canvas for Abrams and Disney to create on.  I sure hope Abrams uses Sebastian Shaw's spirit(cgi of course) rather than Haydens if that part of the story.

Perhaps he was able to write something halfway decent given that he did it of his own initiative and with no deadlines. At least it isn't a script. It's not dialogue we're talking about, just the napkin-sized synopses that others will run with.

I'm surprised to hear myself say this, but I think it's good that GL is involved in that capacity. (But only that capacity.)

hear hear.  I can also see lucas providing napkin-sized ideas to Disney.  I think thats how he wrote the PT, probably while taking a dump just before shooting.  I just hope Abrams and co.  take these ideas and modify them like lucas's original collaborators in the OUT.  The only idea from Lucas that Abrams and the production should take seriously are names of great catering services.  ;D

Yes, it could have been worse. But it also could have been MUCH better.

Whether it could be better is completely subjective. I have been reading this thread and people usually don't even provide specific clues to what would make it batter in their opinion. Of those who did, the things I could agree on is to put less screen time on Ewoks and more on space battle, and having Ford and Fisher make better performances. As for the rest of the film I just don't see any room for improvements.

The biggest problem with ROTJ is the writing/editing and how the movie just drags at times.

-The Jabba Sequence goes on WAY too long, and is frankly pretty boring.  There are so many ways they could have went about this, possibly having them inflitrate Jabba's Palace the same way they did in the Death Star where there is actually some action.  The whole sequence is the droids show up, Leia shows up with Chewy, and then Luke shows up, AND then there is some action.  And Leia just saves Han while Jabba and his buddies are sitting behind a curtain???  Why would he let his beautiful prize be freed from Carbonite that easy???

-It's not the Ewoks that bother me so much, its just another part of the movie that just drags, as it seems like Lucas was going through the motions writing this movie trying to get to 2 hours.

There is alot wrong with the ROTJ as the movie just hasn't aged well.  The only reason it is in my collection is because SW & ESB are such great movies, it completes the trilogy.  Now don't get me wrong, there are some great parts in the movie, but there are some bad parts too that make the movie completely drag at times, and that NEVER happened in SW & ESB.  Those movie were edited perfectly.

Agreed.  Plus the scenes where Leia is getting to know wicket, freeing han, luke and chewy from roasting on a spit really drag on.  As for the jabba scene, I just thought it was written to showcase Luke's  growing jedi powers, but often thought how much more tactical sense it would've made to simply have luke, leia, lando infiltrate, find han and signal to a rebel assault force to obliterate jabba's gang

I would have liked to see Endor as some sort of Imperial capital with a sith temple.  An imperial fleet would be orbiting for protection.  Luke, leia, han, chewy and a company of rebel troops could infiltrate using stolen codes and the shuttle(just like in the movie).  rebel capital ships could draw the fleet to one side of the planet while a massive landing force enters the planet on the other side.  The massive landing party  lures imperial ground forces away from temple to defend the city, aiding Luke's attempt to enter the temple. after dispatching numerous guards Luke enters emperors chambers to take on vader and emperor.  Just a thought, but I think its better than silly teddy bears outfighting a legion of the emperors best troops, and the lazy idea of having another DS.

Leia has her own reasons to be repelled by the notion that her hero/brother is related to the thing that killed her homeworld (the glossing over her reaction to her being his daughter is a giant misstep in this film).

The fact that Alderaan is never mentioned again, and especially not during this key scene always bothered me.

Dammit, you're right. Unfortunately ROTJ is a movie that I dislike more and more every time I watch it, which really hurts considering how much nostalgia I have towards it. The sheer amount of wasted potential is enough for it to be easily the least of the three. The fact that ANH and ESB still hold up to my childhood adoration (and then some) every time I watch is what seals the deal.

amen!  Im very fond of ROTJ, but I just feel that Luca$'s attitude for this one was: "This is the last one, lets just throw everything together and get it done chop-chop!"  I agree that there was some wasted potential.

Return of the King. And there are 11 guys named Oscar who can back me up on this one

Return of the King won the Best Oscar more for the accomplishment of the whole trilogy rather then this specific movie as many voters pointed out.  I remember reading in 2001, they would nominate each Lord of the Rings movie for Best Picture, but would only give them one Best Picture Oscar after the 3rd movie.

As for the Academy, their track record on Best Picture movies is laughable for many years.  Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption or even Quiz Show?  Dancing with Wolves over Goodfellas?  Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan?  Ordinary People over Raging Bull?  Chariots of Fire over Raiders of the Lost Ark?  Driving Miss Daisy over Glory, Field of Dreams, or Born on the 4th of July?   I could go on and on......

or Annie Hall over ANH?  The crackpipe was well used by the academy that night! ;D

ROTJ the best SW film?!  Nah.

1) Dont kill boba fett

2)  make final assault on Imperial city instead of DSII

3) no ewoks and their looney-toons style of fighting.

4) no Luke/leia as siblings

For starters, if these things happen I'd have to say that ROTJ competes with ANH and ESB.
