i can only watch rotj on vhs. why?  because the camera is so static, the pan and scan version gives it some movement. i also like tron on vhs for this reason.

I know, as a kid I had a well worn VHS copy of ROTJ taped from ITV in the UK. My brain still half expects the camera to pan from left to right slowly when Jabba is speaking.  My VHS did this to read the hard subs lol

I also remember a lot of my 80s home VHS favourites having the swearing dubbed out (Terminator, Aliens, Robocop, Predator etc).  When they re-released 'Back To The Future' at the cinema a while back, I almost spilled my popcorn when Doc Brown says "Your gonna see some serious shit!" (I always assumed he was supposed to say "...serious stuff"

Yeah this reminds me of my childhood back in the day. Except where I used to live, once a week on a Sunday a bloke used travel around the streets in his estate car laden with pirate videos. The 'Video man' we used to call him. Remember getting Jedi off him. Also E.T and various others.

I'm reserving the judgment, of course, but I'm sort of on georgec's side. Too pristine looking, I don't know. And tim, I can only imagine that...well, hmmm. People who know the book know what happens? Or those who don't...don't have a clue? But Kingsley can't top his Iron Man 3 performance.

Oh Kingsleys Iron Man 3 performance was nothing but a pimple on the arse of his performance in Sexy Beast. And Frink btw if your still after ideas for ROTR, ever thought about using Kryten from Red Dwarf as a voice over for Greivous?

Thanks but I've got my Grevious voice, and I've never seen a Red Dwarf episode.

I'd highly recommend Red Dwarf if you've never seen it. It's a cult British sci fi comedy from the 80's and 90's. Very well written and very funny. There were 10 series!

Hmm maybe what I meant was this. Considering all the extras and tweaking that have happened to the OT over the years, couldn't they produce a version where all the decent bits remained and all the unnecessary crap was removed from the different versions that have been released all into one definitive revised edit.

So no Jabba scene in ANH. Han does shoot 1st. The improved Falcon Fx when escaping Mos Eisley. The final revamp of the Emperor hologram in ESB. Improved Bespin fx. No Vader voice over at the end of Jedi and the return of Seb Shaw as Anakins ghost. There's loads more but you get my meaning.

Alright. I'm still mad at him for not letting us see the originals, and I doubt disney will do anything to rectify that situation.

I'm a borderline nihilist, yet even I think you're being too pessimistic in this regard.

Yes Disneyhaving the franchise makes me very hopeful restoration wise. Disney always spend time, money and love on meticulous restorations. Some of their restorations of the Disney classics on Blu-Ray are so beautiful yu wanna cry. Finger prints and brushstrokes of the artists can be seen in the detail.  Plus releasing more boxsets is free money for Disney!

For arguments sake, COULD Disney undo anything Lucas has done to the OT? Could they say, release a fully restored OT in original form with only the extra bits from all the other versions that made any sense? (I mean come on. Some of the added stuff was good)  These would be few and far between obviously and were mainly aesthetical. A Revised Definitive Original Trilogy if you will? And have a true, restored, unaltered Classic version on there aswell. Everyone's happy!

Well those wings are waaaaaay too small

They are tiny compared to what they should be. But the interesting thing is, is there going to be an new animated series set within the OT? If we're led to believe it is to be set after Jedi and lead us into VII then they'll barely have time to get 1 series out before 2015

Seriously, CatBus, if Star Wars is so overrated, why on earth do you bother to work on translating subtitles for such a mediocre franchise into so many languages?

Probably because he truly love Star Wars '77 and ESB '80 and kinda like ROTJ '83.

You can dislike parts of this franchise and still be a fan.

Precisely.  I love the OOT and want it preserved for posterity, globally.  The rest of the franchise could be destroyed in a warehouse fire and I'd only shed a tear for the loss of the Holiday Special.  I don't actually think it's that uncommon a set of opinions here.  Obviously you're free to think differently.

Edited to add another reason: You underestimate the power of OCD.

I tend to believe Lucas has a mint, perfect copy of the OOT that he keeps all to himself and sits there stroking it at night while cackling evilly. Kinda like Blofeld with his cat. Boooo..!

I really don't care how much of an OT fanboy you are you've have to admit that ROTS isn't anywhere near bad.

TMP molests the story of the OOT, AOTC beats it to a bloody pulp, and ROTS completely disembowels it.

So, yeah, it isn't anywhere near bad - it's far, far beyond that.

Precisely. They were all mind numbingly awful and ROTS was the rancid icing on a particularly displeasing cake that gave you bile.

If he had, what the heck would would we have done with our free time and disposable income the past 36 years?

A world without Star Wars is not a pleasant concept.

I am of the opinion that Lucas had nothing to do with SW; he might have been nothing more than just a hired hand for the first film and later revised history to make it look like he was the mastermind of the whole franchise. It's like saying Star Trek would not have existed without Rick Berman.

What is it with Ricks?

Agreed with that 100%. Spot on. Right up to the point where he dismissed Abrahms involvement in the franchise. I think it's extremely premature to say his film will be just another weed in a lot where only two flowers grow (like that analogy by the way) I think there's genuine hope we could have a 'great' Star Wars film on our hands here. And we've only had to wait 35 years to get it (Lol)

Nah he's definitely taking more of a backseat on these ones. Sure the main people will consult with him on ideas, as JJ has alluded to, but they will be given free rule to create. Offcourse Lucas will be interested as on what's going on. But as to him disagreeing to this and that, looking other Abrahms shoulder every 5 mins and generally being a pain in the arse. I think you'll find that is very wide of the mark as to what his involvement will be this time.

The tone is so different to Empire. That's what (after watching with more mature eyes) gets me about it. If you look at The Dark Knight trilogy and Lord of the Rings, the tone is constant throughout 1-3. It doesn't waver from one to the next. I've said before that Lucas is a visionary, he's got great ideas. But his ideas need talented people to elaborate on them and bring them to film. That's why the new ones should be good as hes just a creative consultant. Exactly what he should've been on ALL of them.
