Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Thanks, I know all that of course (and yeah, sure SSD would be better; so would be an 16GHz Quad core CPU and 64GB of ram - unfortunately, I have to work with what I have). I need specific info on command line x264 encoding - I have no idea where it stores temp data and I guess it would be good to know that.

@fmalover: Cool story, bro :-) Welcome to the forum :-)

OT Theatrical Release Stereoscopic 3D (* unfinished project *)
Time

Well, I went to see the Titanic 3D conversion and not only was the conversion great, I'd say it was actually one of the best 3Ds I've ever seen, so a conversion, when done right can look just as good as native 3D. But for it to get this good, it took a whole huge team of people creating animated depth maps and filling in the missing content (when you change perspective you see more behind objects on one side) manually frame by frame. And that's the only way to pull something like that off convincingly.

Info: AMANUENSES project
Time

This would be pretty complicated to do for my language, because there are now three different Czech dubs of Star Wars, the first one has pretty low audio quality but acceptable translation and very good performances. The other one, done for the 97SE has the same performers delivering a slightly worse performance, it has a bit better audio quality and a horrible translation. The third one was done for the BD and I haven't heard the whole thing but it seems to have the best translation but the worst performances and voice choices (Han is actually dubbed by the guy who dubbed Luke in both previous dubs, so for us "old" fans it's really bizarre to listen to it). And I would never in a million years recommend that any of these be used for a subtitle translation. What I'd really like (and it seems like I'm gonna have to do it myself when I find some time for it) would be subtitles with as literal a translation of the original dialog as possible.

Yeah, like I said before, I wasn't really able to tell which one sounded better in direct comparison; that's why I prefer to leave audio work to others.

So, anyway, I was wondering if some of you guys could give me a little advice about rendering (not quite there yet but just want the info) when I'm rendering using x264 and I have the system HDD in my laptop and 1 USB2 HDD and 1 USB3 HDD where should I put what to ensure as fast and smooth a rendering as possible? Like when I rendered the AVCHD, I had the lossless source files and the x264.exe and my .bat file and .avs file on the system disc and I was outputting to the USB3 external disc, which is probably not the best way to do it, so it would be good if someone who has more knowledge and experience with this kind of thing could give me advice on what the best file placement would be within the realm of my setup.

Well, I have of course. And it's beautiful in its own right and at a glance (like I said, can't say for sure before more thorough examination) the ESB print looks better in terms of detail than the ROTJ but even there I'll probably be sticking mostly to the GOUT as a source except for shots with heavy DVNR. Because even though  and it may be possible to squeeze more detail out of it than there is in the GOUT and it was proved to be possible for it to be cleaned up quite nicely (provided I can get my hands on the original captures) it's still heavily cropped and has a lot of cases of seriously blown out whites and crushed blacks.

They are all distinctly different mixes. The mono mix is very quite different from all the others.

I so want to a have a little featurette on the BD about all the different mixes, explaining how they're different and why they're all there but I don't have enough knowledge of the matter to do it by myself.

Wow, and you actually noticed that? It took me like 10 times switching between the pictures before I saw what you meant :-D I should start a competition for the weirdest thing people notice about the 2004 transfer (I didn't check but it must be there in the 2004 transfer, because I can't imagine how I could have caused this to happen).

EDIT: You_Too beat me to it. But actually, when you know what to look for, there's a ton of stuff like this in the '04 transfer, which I think is more likely to be caused by stabilization than the cleanup - like they used some sort of dewarp stabilizing algorithm and it just went haywire sometimes.

Idea: Star Wars Fan Preservations Documentary
Time

So, I’m currently working on a bonus clip for my DeEd BD, where I briefly introduce the most important sources I used and I was thinking about what I’ll put on the separate bonus disc for the whole trilogy I got planned after all the v2s are released and I got this idea that since the DeEd is a mesh of many different fan efforts, it would be a really cool thing to have a documentary, mapping the history of fan preservations of the Star Wars films starting from early LD captures, over the early GOUT restorations and 8mm and 16mm transfers and ending with the DeEd, Project Blu and 35mm transfers. It could also mention preservations of the various documentaries and tv shows and bootleg VHS and such and of course maybe some fanedits but I’d like it to focus mainly on the projects that tried to present the films themselves in a better quality than what was officially available at the time.

Now, this is not really a fully flashed out idea, more like a spur of the moment notion but I thought it could be a cool co-operative project. There are so many talented people on these boards that I’m sure together, we could create something really cool. What do you think?

That too, though I'm not sure but there may be some frames missing where they split the shot. And I think there were some other issues with it that made me opt for GOUT in ROTJ DeEdv1.0 - maybe compression artifacts or something like that, don't quite remember.

@timdiggerm: I could be wrong about this assumption though - I can't tell for sure until I see the transfer of course, so what I said there was just my informed speculation.

And I expect that it'll remain so. There may be a few shots in Puggo's ROTJ transfer that will be useful, since it won't have DNR but I don't think the Anakin ghost will be one of them. I'm sure that Puggo's transfer will be great for what it is but the ROTJ GOUT (PAL version) is the best of the three (or the least horrible anyway) and from the screenshots Puggo posted, the print probably won't surpass it unfortunately; I'm sorry to say it but look at Puggo Grande - while it's great in it's own way, you can hardly say that it's better than the GOUT in terms of sources.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for. I now have the comparisons nearly finished and the tweaks to v2.5should be really minor, so they shouldn't take more than a day or two - I'm not getting into any big changes this time. I'm not sure how difficult the authoring itself will be as I have no experience with BD authoring. I didn't even figure out what software I'll use for it yet.

@Pittrek: Yeah, you're right :-)

It is fairly seamless at least for the 2004 DVD and 2011 BD commentaries. The 2004 web commentary I got from Adywan's AVHCD, which was 24fps, so I had some trouble synchronizing it, even though I slowed it down what should have been the appropriate amount - but most of the time, you can't really hear the movie's audio in that one, so it's not too much of a problem that it's slightly out of sync. The other two should be in pretty perfect sync, because I attached them to the BD video in Premiere and then I used the video rather than the audio for sync reference. I did have to cut some stuff out but 99% of the time, it's just someone talking about Special Edition stuff that's not there anyway, as is the case with the Jabba scene. Sometimes I had to use the short periods where no one was commenting to move some section out of sync to allow for some SE changes to be cut out without loosing the commentary running over them. So all in all, I'd say the commentaries are in sync 95% of the time (and when they're not, it usually isn't really an issue) and 98% of the material is there (and the missing material is about the SE). There's still lots of SE references, so sometimes it's kind of funny to watch the film with those commentaries but it usually kind of works, because they say stuff like "this shot was redone with CGI in 97," simply reminding you that you're actually watching the good version :-)

@Infinity: I don't see anything in that shot.

I don't know about makeMKV but in MKVMerge (the part of MKV toolnix you should be using for this) each track can be selected and deselected as default. Also, for the MKV, you may want go here and download srt (text file) subtitles instead; they are much smaller files and should have better compatibility for MKV playback.
