Well, ‘Rey Nobody’ has finished the editing stage! I took Burbin’s feedback and applied it to Spence’s version of the bedroom duel and hangar scenes.
There’s still work to do, including retiming all the subtitle tracks to fit and reapplying all the LUTs. But, it’s a-comin’.
Also, a very minor adjustment I made which will also be present in any future issue of either version of Ascendant. TFA and TROS usually give the blue Skywalker saber an ignition sound that blends the classic one and the Sith one, whereas TLJ gives it a mostly new one based off the classic one.
So, if TFA Restructured ever gets reissued, it’ll feature a version of the ignition sound a bit closer to the classic. I will be reissuing TLJ to fix a dumb visual mistake (flopped wrong shots when DJ breaks out of jail), so I went ahead and replaced one ignition sound I had missed prior. Then, in TROS it will now feature the sound originally given to it for TLJ. The logic is that it sounds like its old self until being broken, then it takes on a different sound. (Also, Leia’s saber will be consistent throughout. Someone on YouTube pointed out that in the training flashback, her saber seemed to have a combination of Luke’s and Ahsoka’s ignition sounds. So, I approximated it and applied it to the two other times her saber is ignited, instead of using the classic sound again.)
HAL, you’re pretty darn awesome!

The funeral is still there! I just meant that scenes were restructured in order to remove Anakin’s murder confession.
Also there won’t be burnt-in subtitles because TAS didn’t have all of them, but I’ll include a .srt subtitle file for the alien dialogue.
It’s too hard for me.
I like this best of the three, although I feel Anakin’s Dark Deeds is more fitting than the Vader/Qui-Gon funeral because it harkens back to Obi-Wan reflecting on what Anakin has become. To me the funeral music sounds more like a statement than a reflection.
To Eddie’s point, I do already make a version of LOE available in which Padme dies. However, my main concern has always been for the saga itself to feel cohesive regardless of any other (in the old way of thinking about it, “EU”) material. So whether Kenobi addresses it or not, the saga viewer is still presented with the apparent contradiction.
Assuming the subject isn’t broached in the remainder of the Kenobi series, I would prefer to leave LOE as it is but to trim a couple things about Kenobi to let the viewer go on believing Padme had lived for some amount of time on Alderaan. I really like Leia’s conversation with Ben in episode 3 because when she wonders about her father, it implies she has less reason to wonder about her mother.
Now, if they go balls to the wall with a hard comment on the discrepancy by having Ben inject memories into her or something like that in a way essential to the story, then we might have an issue. But even so, two versions of LOE dodge the issue. If Kenobi does make a deliberate solution to it, there’ll still be the “saga only” version that coheres better directly with ROTJ.
Fortunately, something like this can be done in FCPX so I was able to do it while having some downtime, since I don’t have to boot into my other OS like I do for most of my fan editing stuff. (God help me the day FCP7 is beyond my reach forever.)
So I’m exporting a candidate, if everything looks right. I followed your directions, with a few tweaks I had to make when facing the reality of what’s there:
Everything else is as described: Losing the lakeside scene and using the truncated fireside scene, reordering scenes in order to remove Anakin confessing to Padme, and nixing the Dooku v Yoda duel.
Shaw. It’s Anakin as he should have been, at the apparent age he is in his unmasking. Anakin redeemed, rather than Anakin regressed.
Add a floating styrofoam cup of coffee to the conference room scene in ANH. Just floating all around throughout the scene.
Sure, that should be easy.
All sounds good to me, man. I’ll do this when I can get to it, and I haven’t been able to do any of my own stuff in over a week.
If there’s a missing frame, I’d imagine he would be able to reasonably borrow it from the DVD (or upscale) and fill the rest in with information from surrounding frames. Absolute worst case just duplicate a frame to keep sync with audio.
That would also make for zero awkward scene transitions.
I can’t promise a specific timeframe, but I’ll add it to my fan editing to-do list for once my current work on TROS is finished. I’ll plan to output as ProRes video and audio, which you can process or encode however you’d like to. Again, once I hand it off to you I won’t plan to keep it around forever on my end.
Also, to anyone reading, please don’t consider this open season on requesting a ton of slightly modified versions of my fan edits. That’s what the ProRes output I make available is for, so that anyone could take my work and tweak it however they’d like or stripmine it. Malgus presented a simple idea and disability preventing him from achieving it, expressed with sufficient detail that I believe he would if he could.
All said, I hope this scratches the itch for you!
The grass is always greener, so we could very well have been sitting here wishing it had instead been a six-part miniseries. Granted. However, I do feel compelled by the idea of what this would be like as a single anthology film. For one thing, it would easier to include in a watch-through of the main saga. Harder to imagine a presentation of the films but with a miniseries thrown in as well. Maybe that’s more of a formatting thing. Or maybe I am a little OCD.
I mean, I could attempt whatever order of scenes you like, but I can’t promise they’ll sound great.
Here’s the scenes in this part of the movie, so please arrange these in order:
In TAS, they go like this:
As you can see, the only changes in TAS are to replace the lakeside kiss with Padme’s family, and then replace fireside scene with lakeside kiss. Shifting things around further than this would likely result in ugly scene transitions. Usually better to stick with the theatrical if it can be helped.
You could always do two audio tracks, one with added score and one without, I suppose.
I prefer Anakin’s Dark Deeds. For Obi-Wan this is not yet “omg it’s Darth Vader bum bum bum buh buh-bum, buh buh-bum,” but rather whatever Anakin has turned into. It harkens back to his moment with Padme in ROTS of reckoning with what Anakin has done.
Or… how would it perhaps go to start with Anakin’s Dark Deeds, but switch to the piano Imperial March when he begins killing people? (Maybe skipping into the main part of the theme without the preliminary percussive buildup.)
I’m not sure I’m following the order of scenes you have in mind. If the fireplace scene is to be retained, it would be best to leave the original transition into and out of it.
TAS basically replaces the original kiss by the lake scene with the Padme’s family deleted scene, then uses the kiss later to replace the fireplace scene.
What order of scenes do you want to have? Let me know and I can try to make that happen, but it can be rather tricky to get a decent audio transition and sometimes that limits what I feel good about.
Fair enough!
The sunset grading for that scene was meant to replace the fireplace scene. If you like that placement for the kiss scene, though, I could try to have it fade into that scene, though it would break it up. I’d recommend letting me place it earlier, either where it was to begin with or swapped with the meadow sequence.
And I can export it as ProRes, if that works. Or mp4.
So you’re talking use my edit of AOTC up to the kiss, which you want to be as in the theatrical, and then the theatrical AOTC for the remainder of the movie except to still remove Anakin’s confession?
I could throw that together for you in whatever file format and approximate size you’d prefer, though I won’t hold onto it after passing it along to you. I must say it’s a weird request, like the first half of the movie is fan edited and the second half more or less isn’t. But, I could do it. Just let me know what specs to shoot for.
What a privilege. Sounds great.
