THANK YOU
I know it’s not flat. I know the reasons. What I still don’t know is WHY.
But why?
No, no, I’m not asking why we know it’s not flat. I’m asking why it isn’t flat.
I get that it’s not, but it sorta seems like maybe it is. So… why isn’t it?
I just applied a broad setting to the whole film. I compared various scenes to KK650’s version, but didn’t go as strong. Mostly tuned down the reds.
Towne32 is right. The upscaling is just for the deleted scenes. They will never look as good as the rest of the film no matter what we could possibly do, but they blend in better than the flat upscale I had used before.
And I’m probably going to use the BluRay for Episode III, since to my eyes it looks pretty good and won’t have any encoding mistakes that I might not spot from schorman’s V1. Episode II on the other hand looks waaaaay better than the BluRay, so I’ll use schorman no matter what mistakes might be there. Episode I was the BluRay color corrected similarly to KK650 (though not as far), and with added grain to counter the overuse of DVNR.
From an out-of-universe point of view, the clear intention of the scene is to lead into Luke revealing their relationship. Anything other than their mutual birth mother is incoherent. It’s a fantasy film, not found footage.
We all know.
I absolutely did, and they are incredible. He’s been very patient and longsuffering with working out some kinks for the Ep2 upscales. (Episode 3’s look the best of all!)
Also, one little comment about HAL 9000’s edit of Episode I: He still calls both Qui Gonn and Obi Wan “Jedi Knights” in his opening title crawl, even though he leaves in Obi Wan receiving that title at the end of the movie.
Never even considered that. It just seems like a slightly imprecise use of language for expediency’s sake. If they were a cop and a rookie in training, I wouldn’t have a problem with the text description calling them a pair of cops.

What are the differences between v3 and v4?
*Thanks to hunsdorfex, the flipped shot where a battle droid nods toward the protocol droid now has a yellow battle droid. It’s the little things.
The “short negotiations” joke has been reinstated. Two reasons for this, one being that COD inadvertently removed Obi-Wan’s sense of humor. This was one short moment to give him a human touch, which is missing from him most of the time. (I also reinstated his remark about picking up “another pathetic life form” for the same reason.) Also, the opening act is rather fast paced in my cut, so this offered a beat to pause on before jumping back into the plot.
After having the chance to watch V3 with some friends, I kept silent note of little things that seemed slightly jarring to me as someone who has the film memorized. Tiny things like, “They’re no match for droidekas!” have been put back in at certain points, if it felt wrong for them to be missing.
Fixed the bad match cut that I used to trim Anakin’s line as he walks Qui-Gon and company to his home.
Put back more of the dinner scene, where they mention podracing and Anakin’s reflexes.
Used schorman13’s preservation for the scene where Darth Maul lands on Tatooine at night, to buffer the transition to the SD “morning before the race” deleted scene.
The battle planning scene on Naboo is edited pretty much exactly like The Phantom Edit. Much less verbose, and leaves some room to be mildly curious about how this battle is going to turn out.*
Here’s the Russuan version: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=It0Ird3zFeY
I can whip up a custom crawl for you if you’d like.
Not a problem. I really don’t remember if I said this before, but please be mindful to avoid confusion if you keep the opening crawl of either edit, including its title.
Cool, I think that’s what I’ll do. Two audio tracks, that way everyone’s happy and there’s no room to complain. “NYYYYYEEEEEE!”
Not to derail the thread, but it’s doctored footage from The Other Boleyn Girl. The idea first appeared from The Cutter, and was used by Q2 for his Ep3 edit. Hundsdorfex recolored the girl’s eyes brown.
Mmmmm, that’s not a bad idea. Seems a little silly to have an alternate track just for that, though.
I was doing something in FCP and played that scene, and the Russian version was still in there. (I must never have removed it!) I was surprised how natural it sounded, even when I wasn’t expecting it.
I’ve given my reasons numerous times. It’s not that I want to, as much as feel I need to.

Well, why don’t we raise the topic and hash things out while it’s still fair game?
What does everyone think about Death Star vs Coruscant for the ending scene with Vader, Palpatine, and Tarkin?
Also, are we sure we don’t like the Russian version of the Vader scream? 😛
Thanks for sharing. My edits pass the buck to the viewer to decide which viewing order is best. Q2 and AEmovieguy both had interesting ideas about making them fit a first time chronological viewing.

I wonder if they ever spoke of his grandmother; Owen and her were close.
