A Collaborative Star Wars Saga Edit
Time

Needless to say, anyone may use anything of mine for whatever they want; I just ask that if you borrow extensively and directly that you acknowledge what you’re doing.
I’d say if this were going to move forward, RogueLeader would need to guide the process and set the parameters; we would likely wander aimlessly if we wait for a totally organic consensus to emerge on any of the particulars; you can’t do everything and not all ideas are congruent with one another.

If your intent is to edit all of the films for continuity, I’d actually suggest having Padme die in Ep3; it’s much easier to simply remove the dialogue from ROTJ. (For me, I’d rather alter the prequels than the OT.) I’m not sure that’s a goal that can be satisfactorily addressed, given how pervasive the serial nature of the series has been. Can Obi-Wan and the droids be separated throughout the prequels, for example?

I will say, TFA:R V2(.1) was a wonderful experience and the project ended up in a vastly better place than I ever had any hope for. It was driven by clear goals, though, so that’s probably a good place to begin with.
I’m happy with my saga setup of my prequels, whatever the best OOT preservation at the moment is, TFA:R, and my upcoming TLJ pruning. (And hopefully an Ep9 which won’t cry out for editing ala ROTJ and TFA.) However, if this project takes off, I’d be happy to join in and participate sporadically.
Although, and I say this as a joke, it almost makes me nervous that you’ll come up with a bunch of cool ideas and effects that I’ll regret not being included in my own edits which I refuse to return to. 😉

At a visceral level, I’m still with you on preferring option A, Mala.
I want to have the best possible option for B as well to consider. If B was what we got in theaters, it wouldn’t have stood way out as a problem to me, I think. Poe and Hux act in character in B, and the humor is driven by their personalities without going over the top. If I can get it down to the point of working, that’s probably the better choice.
Would anyone watching option B as a first time audience feel anything was off?

I felt very put off by this opening “holding” gag, especially with a “your mother” joke tacked on. I can’t imagine an SNL parody of a similar situation going much further in that direction, ala ‘Undercover Boss: Starkiller base.’ It’s all the B-list actors involved in the scene, locking it into SNL territory for me.

Anyway, as the blood vessels in my brain throb and my body cries out for sleep, here’s the latest result in my attempt to thread the needle with this opening scene. I’ve inserted some very lightweight score as the music originally dropped away as Hux says, “…wipe your filth from the galaxy!” A separate tiny piece (unrelated to the music it fades into because that portion of the score is not found on the soundtrack) bridges this lightweight music into the more action-y music of the completed loading bar.

Well now there’s three options in play:

A) My first clip in which it’s pure Hux after Poe opens the channel

B) My second clip, in which Poe chimes in once briefly in order to keep Hux going

C) Natedeug’s clip, with no conversation at all

At this point, and I’m far from settled on this, I’m liking option A. I do want to avoid the SNL elements that stood out very strongly to me upon initial viewing. We’ll see, and I would like to keep hearing all your thoughts.

I agree that it works better with a shot of the kid looking up at the fathier, but I couldn’t get the audio to transition as smoothly doing that. I’m sure someone else who is better at these things will be able to figure that out.

Seconded.
JEDIT: As in, “I also tried this and got the same result; confirmed.”

Here’s the first instance of caretaker removal. I just might end up doing two versions: one with deleted scenes and one without, since I think their inclusion is dubious even if they were fully polished, which they aren’t. I like a few of them quite a bit, but I understand why they were cut and they aren’t 100% presentable.
If I don’t use the Rey caretaker party scene, I think the caretakers’ only plot related role would be lost and they’d be more effective on the cutting room floor. The tone of the Luke/Rey thread would be improved IMHO, since there’d be no real payoff to their presence anymore.

I see your point, Dom. I’ll retool this when I am able and see if it’d be as seamless to retain a bit more of Poe.

I’d like to remove the analogy of a telephone call if possible, and have it be a somewhat dry thing on Poe’s part. Hux starts rambling, and Poe says a very minimal amount, just to keep Hux rambling.

Idea:
“This is Commander Poe Dameron of the Republic fleet, I have an urgent communique for General Hux.”
“Patch him through. This is Hux of the First Order. Tell your precious princess there will be no terms, cut to cockpit for a moment no surrender.”
“Hux?”
"This is Hux. You and your friends are doomed, we will wipe your filth from the galaxy."
Loading complete “BB8, punch it!”

I appreciate the feedback. I do like this version,

By the time I sit down to gather my thoughts and begin contemplating and planning what to do, people have already done so much.
In about two weeks, there’s already about as many prior edits for me to review as there were for the prequel trilogy after a decade!
I’m not quite ready to get the NLE fired up just yet, though. It’ll be my first real project with FCPX, and I already feel the pain of adjusting.
Also, I may not use as many of the deleted scenes as I initially thought, since I think RJ was right to trim the movie in most cases. We’ll see; it is hard to say how I may end up structuring things for this edit until I get started in earnest.

Looks like we have a problem with the “third lesson” deleted scene. Rey running across the landscape is clearly a temp effect and looks very unconvincing. Also, the final shot of the scene features a totally motionless ocean with no waves.

I’m betting someone around here could tackle the second of these, and perhaps that would be good enough to make it usable.
