The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

The original issue was “Hey, regular TIEs like that don’t have hyperdrive!”

With Vader’s TIE it would be “Hey, Vader didn’t take his TIE to go to the DSII, where did that come from?”

With the shuttle it would be “Oh, I guess the DSII explosion was reeeally overpresented in ROTJ if there’s ships inside that still work!”

And that last one feels better than the original TIE because while you still have to accept that the DSII ‘sank’ more than blew up, at least the ship he used was about as plausible as the TIE but has hyperdrive.

I bet JJ would’ve used Vader’s TIE if even he thought he could get away with it.

Well what’s the TIE convey? That he used a bad guy ship to fly out of his own bad guy persona’s gravesite? Or that it pairs with its good counterpart (the X-wing)?

Vader’s TIE says he is reclaiming something of Vader’s to put to good use, similarly to Anakin’s saber a little later.

The shuttle is just plausible, and has hyperdrive that a TIE like that wouldn’t. It makes sense for that setting. And in the shot it contrasts with the small X-wing like he had to hijack a bus or something to get there.

The insufferable nerd in me insists the shuttle is the better choice, as using Vader’s TIE trades one issue for another and grabs your attention to make you wonder how likely it would be for Vader’s TIE to even be there rather than whispering subtly about regular TIEs not being able to fly through hyperspace.

You remember that episode of Star Trek where Kirk was split into a good half and an evil half?

I’m the half that was benevolent but indecisive. Since there’s been so much interest and things done, I guess I gotta be directive.

I like both of those options a lot. The Vader TIE says sometime but doesn’t make any sense, whereas the shuttle is less meaningful but goes further to reducing the “not making sense” aspect of the original shot. The original TIE wasn’t really meaningful anyway, they just showed us something common that Kylo found that was flyable.

Does anyone have a working link to poppasketti’s fun TIE replacements? I’d like to see them.

The audio feels pretty ugly to me; are you guys listening with earphones?

Does anyone have any sound effects laying around that could depict bursting through the ice wall, maybe some shimmer or WOOoooosh of trailing off into hyperspace? If foley can be identified the music wouldn’t be as problematic. (This is the kind of thing I’d spend an hour doing myself if I were able. Getting audio to feel right really does take patience. I may be able to at some point but I toss out my thought process in case anyone does come across something suitable.)

And kewlfish, it’s good to have you here! It’s a weird, arguably stupid thing we do around here but we… we like it. At least the 9000 saga will go out on a high note. And then I can get stabbed by Vader.

What’s the audio track used in this scene. Cus i feel like it fades out to suddenly

It’s “Falcon Flight.” I used the portion aligned with the burst through the ice wall and the portion that aligns with the transition to the next scene.

So it transitions from the film audio into the matching portion of the soundtrack to avoid TIE sounds, then into a later portion of the same music that aligns to what is being transitioned into, then into the next scene’s audio.

The issue is that the music goes right into peppy action time right after the ice wall thing, when in this context it should linger and serve as an end to the scene.

Lol, it’s hard to deny the power of having that be the ship he uses, even if a shuttle seems more “”“realistic”"". Let’s toss it around but I’d be okay with it.

For now, here’s the best I could do with the audio for now, at least. It sucks because I have to fade out of the audio before the TIE sounds begin, which is a little different from each channel. Music fills the gap, then it has to transition into later in the track, then transition to the following scene’s audio.

It… sucks? A little bit. Anyone is of course welcome to give it a shot. it’s a first pass, and often a second or third can crack something. But it’s all I have time for for now!

It sounds good to me, coming through my phone anyway. If each channel in the 5.1 mix feels right compared to its original, it should do fine. This’ll be super helpful in getting this together. The first thing I’ll try is the unused score for when Rey catches the saber in TFA. I just don’t think triple-dipping Burning Homestead would have felt right in the theater. It’s great but it was already (re)used in TFA.

There may be cause for an alternate audio track. That’d be a safe place to add music to scenes that didn’t have any, like the Death Star Duel or fight on Pasaana. And maybe using Burning Homestead for the saber catch. Just an idea…

Poppasketti killing it again. Whenever you’ve got them how you like them send me the full quality export!

The TIEs in the opening shot appear to be heading toward the Star Destroyer, not down to the planet. If we cut to TIEs leaving the destroyer, I’d probably assume they’re different ones. Personally if we wanted to put TIEs in an extra shot, just going from the opening to a forest landscape with TIEs presumably heading to where the action is would work. Maybe a couple troop carriers could be there, as though the troops had vacated them and already left the area. But then we’re just opening a can of worms of what can or should be done with such a shot.

I’m happy to utilize any end result that feels natural, but I repeat I never was bothered by the way the film opens, other than the sucky crawl and mentioning Palpatine right off the bat.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)

Hehehehe… boy. The audio files I had prepared for this for months do not take advantage of the the improvements to the Sarlacc sequence I did for an update to the OOT-synced 1997 SE audio project. The shot where Luke stares down the Sarlacc from the plank has the wrong sound.

I only put out the 1080p version so far, so I’ll pull it until I can correct and reupload.
