Info: some specs & info on my dark_jedi OT preservation releases
Time
Watched the Def. Col. ep IV last night, good job! Added you to my review in the "official reviews thread" on a shared fifth place with TR47. Really lookig forward to Segaflip's post of your P&S transfers: that's how I first saw them almost fifteen years ago. I've been waiting a long time till someone took the effort doing a transfer. If my calculations are right there is a vertical resolution increase of about 75% compared to the NTSC widescreen LD, and an increase of almost 50% compared to PAL widescreen LD.

~~~Segaflip's Newsgroup Posting List~~~
For a post in a.b.dvd you definitely need the name of the rar-files so you can search (instead of retrieving all headers). I usually post there too, wasn't aware that a lot of providers don't support it. I think it's better to keep a.b.starwars purely SW related, that's what it's for. A couple of groups I have good experiences with: a.b.boneless, a.b.cores, a.b.dvdr, a.b.ftn, a.b.misc and a.b.movies.
Info Wanted: a '92 laserdisc transfer to dvd project?
Time
Well, since a lot of folks read it I guess it's not the same as talking to yourself. Anyway, I find this subject pretty interesting too, but can't tell you anything about differences since I only have the Def. Col. on LD (early pressing: split sabres, missing the welding Leia). It did astound me how much better it looks straight off of the LD, then every single transfer so far (except for Moth3r's). That minor filtering everyone applies to make it fit on 4,37 GB really destroys detail, clarity and "liveliness". If your goal is to preserve it, you fail at the point where you alter the raw capture (by filtering, even by compressing). The filtering isn't necessary, but the compression is (when you're being reasonable) and it doen't have to leave noticeable traces: just use enough discs. At that point everyone starts about dual-layer discs, and about prices. I was discussing thes with Arnie.d last week, and he came with the solution: just use 2 single layer discs. Nothing wrong with that: the extended editions of LOTR are spread over two discs aswell, and this way you also preserve a bit of the LD feeling But ehh.. back to the topic!
I looked up what a "Asus z71v WSXGA" exactly is, and it turns out you have been watching it on a 15" laptop screen... You should know better, that's not what movies and computer screens are intended for. Now, the resolution is much higher, but that's of no importance at all, since DVD's fall in the range of the resolution of all big enough TV's. If you like to watch movies I sincerely recommend to watch them on a good TV, every single movie will look better on that than on a computer screen. Come to think of it, plasma, LCD and TFT all give poorer image than conventional cathode-ray tube screens, with the exception of computer games and programs.
Info Wanted: Best way to do reviews for the OT Preservations?
Time
I would not recommend watching one half hour piece, it's better to compare as much points as possible. I always zap through the movie watching segments of about 2 or 3 minutes, and try to include as much facettes as I can (space shots, movement, desert, close ups of R2, dark sequences, light sequences, smoke, light-sabres). Everytime you compare you see new things, so a full list of what I look at would be way too long. But here are a couple of things.
In the opening shot check out the texture of the moon on the left. Determine how long the Tantive's engines are seperable. Look for grain at the bottom of the stardestroyer, and determine how sharp it appears (lines clearly distinguishable?). Freeze frame on a couple of red laserblasts to check the texture for moire patterns or lines around them. When the stormtroopers come rushing into the Tantive check the texture of the smoke with laserblasts in it. And while watching pieces of the Tantive sequence pay attenton to persons moving fast in front of the camera: are they sharp in motion.
In the opening shot on Tatooine determine how sharp 3PO appears during the zoom in (for example you'll see that on EditDroid his texture is distinguisable very early in the zoom-in). Check out the texture of the sky and sand in the following sequence (3PO walking though the desert). To see how clear the limited vertical resolution stands out, check R2 close ups in the sandcrawler. Look how sharp the shot is where Luke looks at Aunt Beru when she sais the droid must speak Bocce, pay close attention to the moisture vaporator in the middle of the shot. Check out Luke's movement in the sequence where 3PO gets his oil bath, is it sharp or does it "wipe". Check the texture of the desert in the first shot of Luke and 3PO in the speeder (here you'll clearly see one of the few flaws of the EditDroid set). Check out some of the following desert-shots. And pay attention to how sharp the shots in Ben's home are. Then skip all the way through to the Darth/Ben fight to check out the sabres. And of course keep your eyes open for anything that looks suspicious
I would also recommend to sort them from least to best, and watch 'em in that order. Since the differences are so minute sometimes, that way it's much easier to compare. If you haven't done any comparing yet, you could use my list in the "official reviews" thread
Use an as big as possible screen, and a HQ DVD player. Increase the color on the pale transfers (EditDroid and Moth3r), view as much transfers as you can get: I still have all ep IV's discussed in my review, except for Farsight. If I need to post one on a.b.starwars just say so. Have fun and don't forget to post your review.
Info: PAL LBX: there's another one... a '78 UK release of a PAL LBX LD
I believe the Def. Col. is also pre-Faces... and nearly everyone uses that one.
Yes that's right, LBX stands for letterbox. I was just as astound and sceptic about it as all of you btw, at the moment I can't guarantee it was from '78, but I'm telling you, the guy knows what he's talking about, so my guess is he's right. One thing I do know for sure is that it was a PAL widescreen version with English audio, and it came out of a very old cover I had never seen anywhere on the internet. We did a quick search but ended up not finding it anywhere (if it's not on lddb.com that sais a LOT). As soon as I get the scans I'll post 'em here.
I went to buy a bunch of LD’s today, and encountered a guy with a LD collection of over 1500 definitely. He had about ten SW trilogies in there, and when we started babbling about them I came to an extraordinary discovery. I stated the only SW PAL LD with English audio is a '95 French version, upon which he showed me a '78 UK release of a PAL LBX LD (with Englisch audio of course). Details coming up…
STAR WARS: the alt.binaries.starwars thread
Time
Moth3r's ESB was posted a while back, I missed it too, and had to wait until it popped up on MySpleen. I love MySpleen, but it usually takes me one or two full days to download torrents. And that's damn long compared to the 6 hours it takes me to pull it off a newsgroup (yeah I know I'm impatient). Anyway, there seems to be need for Moth3r's ESB so I'll post it, and for the sake of completion start off with ANH.
EDIT: Moth3r's discs deserve to be posted every week, they ROCK!
First I'd like to thank everyone who has worked or is working on a transfer, I really appreciate all of them. If some comments may seem vile, they weren't meant to be. The comments also may seem too negative overall, just see it this way: if it's not mentioned it's good
I've been doing some very extensive comparing every time a new transfer comes out, and I've come to realize you really get better at it every time. The first couple of times it's very hard: you don't really know what to focus on, and as a result I've also had TR47 and EditDroid on #1 in the past. I've since discovered more weaknesses in all of them. Anyway, this is my top 8, I've always tried to be as objective as possible. It's purely about picture quality (menu's, extra's etc. don't have anything to do with the quality of the transfer). The sound is good on all transfers so I'll omit discussing that, the differences don't weigh up to the differences in picture quality in my opinion. The color/contrast/brightness being a bit off also is no argument, as long as it can be adjusted on your TV.
What I play my DVD's on: a high-end Philips DVD-player (DVDR-70) and a high-end Philips 32" widescreen TV (32PW9520).
7 - Farsight
In principle decent picture quality, although it isn't very sharp. It also has too much noise, and the image is distorted in a real peculiar way: the forming of horizontal lines. Especially visible in segments with things like smoke. But the big minus with this transfer is that the whites are totally clipped. Meaning: everything that's bright has lost all detail and was turned into plain white, beyond the point of possible recovery by adjusting your TV. It looks bad and it hurts the eyes.
6 - ISOMIX
I agree with Rikter on it being a straight transfer, very little or no filtering has been applied. It is one of the sharpest ones around. But it has the most noise and compression artifacts of all 8, not a good combination. Although not taken into account, it has one unique feature: English subtitles, and one close-to-unique feature: isolated score.
5 - Dark Jedi
Straight transfer aswell. I really can't say whether it should be above or below TR47, therefore they share the fifth place. It has a little bit more noise, but has been compressed better, it doesn't "wipe" as much during motion and doesn't have color banding. It's a bit too dark so boost the brightness a bit.
5 - TR47 (Cowclops V.1)
A sharp one, but a bit too much noise which leads to compression artifacts, a good example is the smoke with laser in it, when the stormtroopers come rushing into the Tantive. I know this is a painful subject, but it definitely is there (I don't care about Q numbers, just watch it on a big enough screen). It also has color banding and "wipes" (becomes unsharp) during motion.
4 - Cowclops (V.2)
Nice clear, smooth (virtually no noise) and sharp image (although TR47 was a tiny bit sharper). But it suffers from green shades throughout the entire movie (for example to the right of Luke after Obi-Wan sais "I was once a Jedi knight, same as your father"). And I was really surprised to see it have some pretty bad color banding: worse than V.1. A real shame, without the green shades and the color banding it would have been the best NTSC transfer yet. On a 4:3 TV it may have double black bars, but that's just an indication your brightness is set to high, probably the reason why Cowclops did that.
3 - EditDroid
Sharpest NTSC transfer around, nice and clear, also virtually free of noise. It would have been perfect if it wasn't for one: the extreme moire/dot crawl. And two: the filtering that's responsible for some weird (and pretty bad) noise creation: most pronounced in some of the ep IV Tatooine footage. Take a look at the first 10 seconds of chapter 11 and you'll see what I mean. If you plan on watching it entirely DO add some brightness and a huge amount of color.
2 - Dr. Gonzo
Very clear, smooth image. And although it isn't the sharpest one around, its clarity really gives it a sharp appearance (that may sound illogical, but when you see it you'll know what I mean). It also is 99% free of noise, the least noisiest one by far.
1 - Moth3r
First and only PAL LD transfer available. The difference with NTSC LD is astounding. The increased vertical resolution results in much more detail. It has a few drawbacks such as noise, surfaces having colored spots, the occasional line drop-out or the two color shifts, but the NTSC transfers so far are no match for this one. Just don't forget to boost the color on your TV, same as with EditDroid.
