What the hell?! I did not say anything ABOUT your capture, I just wanted to know whether or not it was your capture. I've never criticised your transfering in any way. I very much appreciate it, for comparing the different LD sets, you know that. Don't confuse me with the naggers. And yes, you can get a copy of my transfer, on which I'm working at the moment, and I'm telling you it WILL look good

The main thing that struck me was that the Definitive is much sharper: much more detail. But which things do you think, are better on the Faces set?

In every comparison I've seen, the Faces shots are the worst: very blurry. I've seen DJ's Definitive and Faces captures, and the Definitive is MUCH better than the Faces. Why are you using it, is the difference between the Definitive/Faces captures you did with the X0, much smaller?

Oh I know the 2950/925/909 don't even come near the X0/X9/S9. There's no question about that. But I live in PAL land, so that's why I have PAL/NTSC players myself. I have been thinking about getting one of those top Japanese ones, but unless the final product of this project will blow me right off of the couch, I'm not willing to spend THAT much money. It's gone far out of hand already, with two players and over 150 discs

Yes, there is, but I can't tell you if it's better or not. It was on ebay last week: link.

And nin, thanks for all the LD info, and for those X9/X0 screencaps. Really interesting stuff. What are your experiences with the 2950/925/909? I'd like to know what you have to say about those, how do they compare (I have a 909 and just got a 2950, but haven'y done a thorough comparison yet).

No compared to those they may look slightly better, but I doubt it. I've seen the US ones on my own LD player, and Dark Jedi's transfer of the SC set on DVD. And I didn't notice any difference. The LD was just a bit better, but that's because the other was a transfer to DVD, and that will never look as good as the original source. At least, no single transfer as of yet, has.

On isohunt.com or thepiratebay.org you can find a lot of versions of CCE and Rebuilder, not the latest Rebuilder version (1.01 final), but that doesn't matter much, as CCE does the most important work.

Sounds like you should wait for that Definitive transfer coming up! And what do you mean "matches my VHS set"? The Definitive is the same footage as the Faces, just better looking. The nicest NTSC ones so far are EditDroid and Dr. Gonzo.

That's right, so the transfer with the least benefit from putting it on DL instead of SL will be X0

But I really wonder if you'd get more compression artifacts in an anamorpic transfer than in a non-anamorphic one... There is less black and more image, this makes it harder to compress. But it's also less sharp (when watching them both in a 4:3 ratio) which makes it easier to compress. Would that cancel each other out?

Just took a look at DJ's Faces transfer, and it doesn't look nearly as good as his Definitive transfer. I'd go for that one, it's much sharper and cleaner.

I have Rebuilder v1.01 and CCE v2.70, but it isn't really essential to have the newest versions. If you don't know how to obtain them just PM me.
DJ, I don't know what you used for your encoding, but CCE can also do DV-AVI > DVD conversion, I'm pretty sure better than anything around.

You should check out DVD Rebuilder using CCE, it's even easier to use than Shrink and gives you 1654176 times better results. Ever since I got it I regret I ever used Shrink (it's not bad, but CCE's just so damn miraculous!).

I know the X0 weighs twice as much as the X9, is by far the hardest to come by, and preferred by the bulk of videophiles. From what I've heard the 2950 is a bit "better" than the 925. But the guy I bought my 909 from also has a 2950, and he told me the difference in playback quality between those was insignificant.

This is really weird, in the TV broadcast they left the pitch shift, on the VHS tapes Moth3r used they corrected it, and on the DVD release they left it aswell... Does anyone know what they did with the other PAL releases?

The temporal smoothing is worse than anywhere in the "R2 in the valley" sequence. Maybe there could be benefit from using some SC footage. But bear in mind that aside from the previous comments, the SC also has a LOT of artifacting. And I forgot to mention that - just as the color - the aspect ratio is all over the place.

When I heard all the good reactions about the DJ's transfers of Sega's Japanese SC set, I decided to get the US equivalents. Got them pretty cheap, $15 (plus $30 shipping to Holland). And I carefully examined them on my DVL-909, comparing them to my definitive set. The only positive things I noticed were:
- the absence of motion smearing, this is very evident
- the presence of stars, especially those in the opening shot of SW
I also noticed they are much brighter than the definitive, so in some scenes you see more (things which are black or very dark on the definitive). I can't say if this is better or not, it just gives you a whole other viewing experience.
But after the examination I sold them again (for $45, plus shipping), the reasons? It has much more noise, the colors are way off in some scenes, especially the desert scenes. The shot in ROTJ of R2 and 3PO on their way to Jabba's palace has a horrible, oversaturated and weird look for instance. The definitive also has a bit more detail, and I discovered what THX certified sound means.
Now, the noise was my biggest problem, an X0 will deal with most of that, but there definitely is more noise on the discs. Zion, you haven't seen these on the X0 yet, right? And what you said about the shift towards green (due to film ageing or not), could that could that have something to do with the green shading present in Cowclops' v2? I noticed it in DJ's Definitive capture aswell btw.
