A lot of people have suddenly become VHS haters ever since the DVD came out, but if you have a good player it isn't quite so bad. Pretty good I'd say. I've transfered a lot of tapes to DVD with my DVD recorder, and when I play one of those most people don't even notice it came from VHS. When I tell them they're usually astonished by the quality. Everyone has created a horrible image in their mind about it, remembering only how bad it can be: tapes played a hundred times and played back on a player with dirty rotten heads.
I also did my own SW LD transfer for fun, with my DVD recorder, but that didn't turn out very well. Because I had examined a lot of those I readily noticd the excessive compression artifacts. So when you want to do a real good transfer, you definitely have to compress it with CCE, instead of letting your recorder do it on the fly. It does a better job with VHS than with LD, but CCE is just magical.

Yeah tell us more! It's hard to find good info about the subject, and ever since I got my own DVL-909 a couple of months ago I gooten insatiable about the subject. For example, what do you know about the differences between the S9/X9/X0? Since a good '96 S9 is obtainable for about $1200, an X9 for twice that, and an X0 (if you can find one) probably for twice THAT. EDIT: OK $2800

Info Wanted: The different Definitive Collection sets...
Time

When I was looking through the SW LD’s offered at Ebay, I noticed the backside of this Def. Col. box is different than mine. Mine is entirely black, with only some text and the Fox, THX and CBS/Fox logo’s at the bottom. But this one, as you can see, has a totally different backside. Does anyone know if this is connected with the presence of the split sabers/missing welding sequence? My set is a faulty one.

It took us only a couple of days to move all our stuff to the new house, but the phone company two weeks to move an ADSL connection! Two weeks without internet at home really is a torment. But thanks to Sega I managed to complete your PAL DL version. Great one, knocked Moth3r off the first place. Reasons:

- no colors flying around
- no lines next to objects
- less filtering resulting in less side-effects
- less noise
- saturation/color-balance is right

But the are two things that caught my eye: although the noise has been reduced compared to Moth3r, it is not gone by far, though I really expected that, any theories? And sometimes there can be some quite noticeable dotcrawl, what do you think has caused that? But don't get me wrong, to my eyes it seems perfect in every other way.

Mono mix for Moth3r's ANH DVD

This rocks! A DVD with all the mixes (seven if I'm not mistaken) still is a great idea. There are five mixes, not including the foreign language dubs:

1. Original Theatrical 70mm 6-track
2. Original Theatrical 35mm Dolby Stereo
3. Original Theatrical Academy mono
4. 1985 digitally remastered mix
5. 1993 THX-certified digitally remastered mix

I think it's safe to say that sadly, the 70mm 6-track mix in its original form will never see the light of day again (although elements of it appear in the later remixes).

Correct.

With 6 and 7 I meant the SE and the DVD.

Of course it's dual layer, and of course its anamorphic widescreen... he did say he didn't even re-encode the footage except for the scenes that needed altering. But I'm curious about the sound mix aswell. And there's one thing, you ARE going to do it over when X0 comes out right? All the more because it took you only two days (which is unbelievable). Then you can really bet your ass I'll throw away my DVD's (OK they're burnt ones, but what the christ!).

Hadn't seen that yet! Looks pretty cool. I'm downloading it. here's the initial version of the Tom Cruise thingy, but it's over 1 mb: a bit too large for a signature. People with dial-up would have killed me. It also runs too fast when you play it in Firefox.

Hey you have a weird name for an Australian, "klokwerk" is a Dutch word. What's the story?

Just something that crossed my mind. Since you guys are working through the captures frame by frame, and spending so much time on evetything. How much extra work would it be to undo the 3:2 pulldown for an X0 PAL version? Assuming you're right Laserman, about it having more detail than you can achieve with any existing PAL LD player, this way the project will conquer NTSC and PAL land altogether.
